Chapter 26 Zoo

The head of the kindergarten, Ms. Lin, wanted to shift the blame to the deputy head and let the matter drop, but none of the parents would agree to that.

As the highest-ranking leader in the kindergarten, is it really possible that he knows absolutely nothing about what's going on below? Especially in such an important place as the kitchen, no parent would believe that.

"Parents, please feel free to share your thoughts. I feel the same way about this problem. The most important thing right now is not to assign blame, but to find a solution so that the children can have clean and healthy lunches." The supervisor seemed to empathize with the situation.

“We need to discuss this.” Grandma Wu had clearly become the leader of their group.

There's only one kindergarten in this neighborhood. The other kindergartens are a bit far away, and if something like this can happen at a kindergarten right under our noses, will it be okay to transfer to another kindergarten? But the principal and the kitchen staff must be replaced, and the vice principal must also be replaced.

"How about we discuss it together when the other parents come to pick up their children tonight?" Shu Yan suddenly said from the side, deliberately not lowering her voice. The supervisor and Principal Lin, who were standing nearby, immediately turned pale.

A dozen or so parents were enough to give them a headache; if fifty or sixty parents came together, things would escalate and might even attract reporters. This would be a stain on the reputation of Nancheng Capital, and not only the principal but also the property manager would be in trouble.

“I think you, as the parents’ representatives, can make the decision. The sooner the matter is resolved, the better, otherwise it will delay the children, won’t it?” The supervisor personally poured tea for all the parents. At this moment, a little girl came to her side and whispered a few words. The supervisor smiled and said, “You haven’t eaten yet, have you? I’ve had someone order lunch. Everyone, have something to eat first.”

"I can't eat." Speaking of food, none of the kindergarten children have eaten yet.

All the parents were anxious. They said it was okay for themselves to go hungry, but they couldn't let their children go hungry.

"Parents, don't worry, I've already arranged for the kindergarten to cook again. All the ingredients are freshly bought, the meat is pork belly, plus a pork rib and seaweed soup. If you're still concerned, you can go back and check now," the supervisor said immediately.

There's no need to check now. They've been out of kindergarten for so long, they've probably sent someone over to clean up. If they went back now, they definitely wouldn't see any shredded potatoes or carrots, let alone pork neck meat. Flies probably suffered too. There's nothing we can do, it's just that we didn't do it. If we had put in the effort, those kitchen problems wouldn't exist at all.

"What's the point of this arrangement? I don't even know how long our little one has been eating unclean and unhealthy food. If it weren't for your poor management, would this have happened? Ugh! You're making my head hurt." One grandmother was dissatisfied.

After discussing the matter for an hour or two, the parents demanded that the kindergarten principal and vice-principal be dismissed, as well as the kitchen chef. The new chef would need to pass their interview. In addition, there were two assistants in the kitchen, and Grandma Wu suggested that they find someone they knew to supervise them.

As Director Lin listened, her face grew increasingly dark. Just as she was about to jump out, her supervisor grabbed her and said with a smile, "These requests you've made are beyond my authority. I will immediately report them to my superiors and give you a reply as soon as possible."

"Don't say 'as soon as possible,' give me a specific time." Shu Yan frowned. She didn't want things to just fizzle out like this. That wasn't her intention. "I'll explain the situation to the parents who don't know the details later. If you don't provide a solution by tomorrow, we'll all come together."

“Yes, if that doesn’t work, we all have relatives and friends at home, so I don’t believe you can renege on your promise,” Grandma Wu chimed in.

"We'll give all the parents a satisfactory answer tomorrow at the same time." The property manager felt a pang of anxiety. She was absolutely certain that these parents would do all sorts of crazy things for their children, so the sooner the better.

“Since we’re already here, why not take care of the tutoring class as well?” one of the mothers suddenly said.

Everyone turned to look at her, including Shu Yan.

When the tutoring class was first announced, the kindergarten principal and teachers said that this was the golden time for children to learn languages, and that the class would be taught entirely by foreign teachers. The main reason was that all the parents had signed up except their own children, fearing that their children would be ostracized by their classmates and treated differently by the teachers. The fee of one hundred yuan a month was not low, but many parents gritted their teeth and paid it for their children's sake.

For the first week, it was indeed the foreign teachers who were teaching. After a week, many parents found that the foreign teachers were there less and less, and the kindergarten teachers were the ones who were really teaching the children. The parents discussed this privately, but in the end, they chose to remain silent because they were worried that the teachers would not treat their children well.

“This tutoring class is just a sham; I suggest we just cancel it. Since the same teachers are there anyway, we should decide for ourselves which teacher to entrust our children to, and we'll pay for that. This way, the teachers won't be working for nothing. The same applies on weekends. Those who can take care of their children at home can do so, and those who can't can leave them at the school. We can charge a little extra; 100 yuan is a bit too high.” This mother’s words resonated with many, especially several grandmothers.

"Exactly. I'm retired and stay home to take care of the kids, so I have plenty of time on weekends. The kids' parents also want to spend more time with them on weekends, but the school has set up some kind of tutoring class. I think it's just something you guys come up with to make money." Grandma Wu felt heartbroken thinking about her eldest grandson, who had lost a lot of weight.

Just as Director Lin was about to speak, the supervisor pulled her back, glared at her, and smiled, "I will report all these issues to you and will definitely give you a satisfactory answer."

The dismissal of the kindergarten's management needed to be reported to higher authorities, but the kindergarten's cook and cleaning staff were all fired directly to appease the parents' anger. Judging from the supervisor's attitude, it's estimated that Principal Lin will also be leaving, and the parents' anger has finally subsided somewhat.

When they returned to the kindergarten, the children were almost done with get out of class. Seeing Shu Yan and her group, many parents couldn't help but be curious. Upon learning what they had seen and heard at noon, they were immediately furious.

"What's the property management doing?" The parents immediately surrounded them.

“We have already spoken with them today. We have asked them to replace the entire management team of the kindergarten, find new chefs for the kitchen who must pass our interview, and hire kitchen helpers who we deem reliable.”

Parents are always very cautious when it comes to their children. This incident has served as a wake-up call for everyone. These children, who have just started kindergarten, are as young as two years old and as old as five or six, at an age where they don't understand anything.

The next day, all the parents rushed to the property management office. The crowd below was so large that even the usually composed manager couldn't help but feel uneasy.

"Dear parents, please be quiet. This is our company's General Manager Huang, who is here today to address the issues you have raised. He will definitely satisfy you all."

Mr. Huang was in his forties, thin, and wore gold-rimmed glasses. He looked very refined, and if you didn't know his background, you would think he was a scholar.

The matter was handled very smoothly. Principal Lin and several senior executives were dismissed, and the tutoring center was disbanded. If mothers are unable to pick up their children after school, they can entrust them to the kindergarten teachers. The price will be negotiated by the teachers themselves, and the property management will not interfere. If the children are also sent to the kindergarten on weekends, an extra thirty yuan will be charged per month.

This news is good news for single-income families or families with elderly members who can help take care of children, as it can save them money and allow them to spend more time with their children.

...

The weather was very cool during the National Day holiday this year. We've been in the southern part of the city for more than half a month, and we haven't taken the kids out shopping yet.

"How about I take you to the zoo today?" Shu Yan asked with a gentle smile as she helped Tianbao get dressed.

Zoo? Ye Jingjing and Tianbao's eyes lit up instantly. Wang Yitong had been to the kindergarten and taken many photos, and had specially brought the school to show Jingjing. "Can we see a zoo with tigers and lions?"

She was captivated when she first saw the photos. Ye Jingjing is a sensible child who knows how hard Shu Yan works taking care of them, and she never voices any thoughts that she thinks would be a burden to her mother.

"It's a zoo. There are tigers and lions, peacocks, pandas, and lots and lots of other small animals. If you want to go, hurry up and brush your teeth and wash your face. We need to leave early, otherwise we'll have to wait in line for a long time." Shu Yan patted the two children's heads.

"Mom, you're the best. I'm going to wash my face now." Tianbao ran to the bathroom like a rabbit, brushed his teeth and washed his face on his own, then moved a small stool to sit in the spot closest to the door, afraid that Shuyan would leave him behind.

I put hats on the two children and led them to the zoo.

"Mom, there are so many people!" Ye Jingjing looked at the long queue in front of her and became a little anxious. What if she couldn't buy a ticket? She would definitely miss the tiger and panda.

Tianbao, standing to the side, looked left and right, restless and trying to shake off Shuyan's hand to run off and play. But Shuyan glared at him, and he pouted and calmed down.

About half an hour later, it was Shuyan's turn. "After you go in, you have to stay right behind Mommy, okay? Do you remember what Mommy told you before she left?"

"Remember, you are not allowed to talk to strangers, you are not allowed to eat anything given by strangers, and you are not allowed to go with strangers." Ye Jingjing immediately recited the three prohibitions.

"Where's Tianbao? Do you remember him?" Jingjing wasn't worried, but she wasn't sure about Ye Tianbao. That silly boy, he might just follow someone if they gave him a piece of candy.

"Remember, always stay by Mommy's side. If you can't see Mommy, go find the policeman." Tianbao said, but his mind was already there.

"Oh right! Did you see those uncles and aunties in blue clothes? If you can't see Mommy, go look for them, don't look for anyone else, okay?" Shu Yan said again, still worried.

"Okay," the two children replied loudly.

Now that she knew, she would probably forget everything when she saw the animals and got excited. Shu Yan shook her head helplessly and decided to keep a close eye on them.

Just as she expected, when Ye Tianbao saw the first animal, he shook off Shu Yan's hand and ran over to it.

It was the children's first time visiting the zoo, and Shu Yan didn't want to be too strict. She could only keep a close eye on them and not let them out of her sight. Fortunately, Ye Jingjing was excited for a while and then obediently returned to her side, instead of running and jumping around like Ye Tianbao.

"Mommy, look! It's a tiger!" Tianbao exclaimed, looking at the tiger inside the wire fence. "The tiger is so big! Will it eat people?"

“Of course, and it only eats naughty children.” Shu Yan tapped his nose.

"Excuse me, would you like to take some photos?" A zoo staff member approached with a camera.

Tianbao didn't understand what photos were, but Ye Jingjing had seen Wang Yitong's photos and knew what was going on. She turned to Shuyan and finally said, "Mom, I want one."
