Chapter 17 Space Upgrade

Seeing that it was getting darker and darker, Jiang Yuwei realized that if she pushed the cart through at night and couldn't see the road clearly, she might accidentally drop Ning Huaizhi and Ning Zhao, which would be a greater loss than gain. So she picked up the paper and pen on the ground, wrote an IOU for one tael of silver, threw it to Chen Guixiang, and went inside to carry Ning Huaizhi on her back.

Ning Huaizhi, being inside the house, naturally heard everything that happened in the courtyard, and his disappointment in his mother grew deeper and deeper.

Jiang Yuwei laid out the cart, carried Ning Huaizhi on it and settled him in, then went inside to hug Ning Zhao. Ning Wan followed behind Jiang Yuwei, tugging at her clothes and walking timidly.

Chen Guixiang and Sun were naturally happy to see that the family was finally leaving. There was an extra room in the house to store miscellaneous items, and it would be more spacious for their own family to live in.

Ning Huaizhi stared intently at the undisguised joy on his mother's face, and said in a deep voice:

“Mother, we’re leaving now. We’ll come back to give you gifts every year for the holidays. Now that we’ve separated our households, there’s no need for us to keep in touch.”

Chen Guixiang looked at the eldest brother lying on the cart with a look of disgust and said:

"Let's go, let's go quickly. I don't need you to bring me anything. It's good enough that your family of four isn't just staying at home eating for free."

Seeing Chen Guixiang's attitude, Jiang Yuwei looked down on her even more and pushed the cart away without looking back.

Upon arriving at her new home, Ning Zhao happily said:

"Mom, we have our own home now."

Ning Wan clapped her hands and laughed:

"Home, my home"

Seeing the two children so happy, Ning Huaizhi felt much better and looked up at Jiang Yuwei, saying:

"Yuwei, you've had a tough time these past few days."

Jiang Yuwei first made the kang (heated brick bed), then helped Ning Huaizhi and Ning Zhao onto it before smiling and saying:

"Although this house is dilapidated, it is still habitable. After some time, when we have made some money, we will hire someone to renovate it properly, build more rooms, and build a high courtyard wall to create a large yard. It will be convenient to raise some chickens and ducks for our own consumption in the future, since there is plenty of open space here."

Ning Huaizhi nodded and smiled:

"Yuwei is very thoughtful. Here are five taels of silver for you to keep. You may need them in the future."

Jiang Yuwei looked at Ning Huaizhi in surprise and asked:

"How could you have money? You're not..."

Ning Huaizhi gave a wry smile and said:

"Don't forget that I was a general in the army and received a monthly salary. It's just that I was injured this time because I fell into a villain's trap. I probably won't get back the silver I saved in the army. Only these five taels of silver were left to me by my subordinate when he left."

Jiang Yuwei took the silver and smiled at Ning Huaizhi:

"I didn't expect you to have a backup plan. Why didn't you take this money out when it was with the Ning family?"

Ning Huaizhi glanced at the two children, then at the silver in Jiang Yuwei's hand, and said in a deep voice:

“I originally intended to give this money to Mother, but since I came home, she hasn’t even glanced at me. I’ve seen how she treats you and the children so harshly. Now that we’ve separated our households, this money naturally can no longer be entrusted to Mother for safekeeping.”

Jiang Yuwei put away the silver in her hand and didn't ask any more questions. Since Ning Huaizhi wasn't blind and incompetent, and wasn't blindly filial to Chen Guixiang, but instead knew how to consider his own family, she was relieved.

Jiang Yuwei went to the outer room and cooked a meal with the ingredients she had prepared beforehand. After the family of four had eaten their fill, they finally went to sleep peacefully.

In her sleep, Jiang Yuwei's consciousness entered the space. She wanted to water the crops in the space, but when she looked up, she saw a line of words above her head: "Congratulations on moving, host. One acre of fertile land is given as a gift!"

Jiang Yuwei was overjoyed to see that the open space in front of her had increased by another acre. She took out all the remaining seeds from the thatched hut and planted them. She also picked some ripe red beans and soybeans and put them out to dry in the yard.

After finishing my work, I took a shower in my spatial dimension before dawn, and felt much more relaxed.

Jiang Yuwei found a good spot before dawn and started digging hunting pits. After digging three or four pits of various sizes around the house, she covered them with branches and weeds and made a few marks that she could understand before she felt a little more at ease.

This pit can keep out wild animals as well as bad guys.

When she got home, she found two large rocks at the foot of the mountain that were perfect for making a millstone. She made a simple rope knot with vines and moved the rocks back to the yard one by one. She then found a hammer and chiseled small pits into the rocks to make grinding beans easier. She shaped the two rocks into a roughly circular shape and then found suitable wood to make a millstone in the yard.

Jiang Yuwei looked at the courtyard and, satisfied, patted the dust off her hands.

The only drawback right now is that the house is too small, and the kitchen is too small to even fit a table. After thinking for a moment, she went outside and found a pile of thatch and some straw rope, and also cut some bamboo.

Jiang Yuwei plans to build a thatched awning outside the house and make a table out of bamboo. In the future, she can prepare ingredients under the awning and then take them into the kitchen to cook, which will be much more convenient.

She could do this small job herself without needing anyone's help, and it would also solve the main problem of the small kitchen. Without further ado, she quickly arranged and tied the straw. Thinking that it should be tied thickly and sturdily to withstand the wind and rain, Jiang Yuwei tied several layers before she felt at ease.

Then, according to the dimensions, the four wooden pillars were firmly nailed into the ground with the front higher than the back. Only then did they take the bamboo ladder and install the thatched roof. Just after finishing these tasks, they heard Ning Wan running home from outside the yard crying.

Jiang Yuwei hurriedly climbed down the ladder to check, and saw that Ning Wan's right arm had a large red bump. Jiang Yuwei asked with concern:

"Wan'er, what happened to your arm?"

Ning Wan, her eyes red, pointed to the spot behind her and said aggrievedly:

"This, this, it hurts..."

Jiang Yuwei looked in the direction Ning Wan was pointing and was shocked. She quickly pulled Ning Wan and ran into the house.

After entering the room, Jiang Yuwei first used the spiritual spring water to wash Ning Wan's wounds several times, and then comforted her:

"Wan'er, be good. In a little while, Mother will go and chase away those bees. Don't go out for the next few days. Mother has set a trap outside. If you fall in, it will be dangerous. Wait until your brother is better in a few days, then you can go out and play with him."

Ning Wan felt that her arm was not as painful as before, so she nodded obediently and dared not run around outside again.

Jiang Yuwei thought that there seemed to be some purslane growing in front of her house, which she could pick, mash, and apply to Ning Wan's wound. Having lived in the wild, she naturally knew that this stuff was excellent for reducing swelling and relieving pain.

Jiang Yuwei didn't dare to delay. After getting some purslane to apply to Ning Wan's face, she hurried out to find where the bees had landed.
