Seeing that Jiang Yuwei was sharp-tongued, Madam Sun quickly spoke up:
"I don't think everyone else is a fool. I'm just standing up for the old lady. It was clearly you who angered her to death yesterday. How come you don't dare to admit it now in front of her memorial tablet?"
"Enough! Shut up! Mother's death has nothing to do with Yuwei, don't make baseless accusations here!"
Just as everyone was engrossed in watching the play, they heard Master Sun's voice arrive before he did. Then, Master Sun, dressed in mourning clothes, hurriedly rushed in from outside, with the man who had just helped Jiang Yuwei out of the predicament at the mansion gate standing beside him.
Jiang Yuwei felt that not only was the voice familiar, but her appearance also seemed familiar, though she couldn't quite place it for the moment.
Master Sun walked up to Jiang Yuwei and gave her an apologetic smile:
"Yuwei, I'm so sorry. My mother told me before she passed away that you must attend her funeral, so I sent someone to deliver the obituary to you. But I really didn't expect things to turn out like this. I'm so sorry to have troubled you."
Looking at Master Sun's haggard appearance, Jiang Yuwei had no heart to criticize him, but only looked at him with concern and said:
"Second brother, you don't need to worry about it. I am already content that I was able to come and see our godmother off. What have I done to deserve that our godmother would still be thinking of me before she passed away? Although none of us wanted to see this outcome, second brother, you must cheer up. The Sun family can't do without you. Our godmother's spirit in heaven must also hope that we can all be well."
As Jiang Yuwei spoke, her eyes filled with tears, and she quickly took out a handkerchief to wipe them away. Seeing this, Master Sun sighed.
"My mother left too early, too early."
Seeing this, Madam Sun gave a disdainful snort.
"Hmph, weren't you quite formidable just now? Why are you acting all weak in front of my master now?"
Upon hearing this, Master Sun felt that Madam Sun was too unreasonable. Otherwise, his mother wouldn't have been angered to death by her. He had originally planned to punish her after the funeral, but she actually kept harping on Jiang Yuwei, causing a scene at his mother's funeral hall, ruining the Sun family's reputation, and preventing his mother from leaving in peace.
So Master Sun no longer bothered to save face for Madam Sun, and glared at her directly, speaking coldly:
“Madam is disrespectful and has disturbed the old lady’s peace. Guards, take her away and lock her in the ancestral hall. No one is to let her out without my permission!”
No sooner had Master Sun finished speaking than two old women rushed in and dragged Madam Sun out. Upon seeing this, Madam Sun quickly begged for mercy:
"Sir, please, for the sake of our many years of marriage, allow me to see the old lady off on her final journey, sir..."
The two old women ignored Madam Sun's shouts and dragged her to the ancestral hall with great force.
Seeing this, Jiang Yuwei also wanted to say goodbye to Master Sun and leave, but Master Sun looked at Jiang Yuwei again and said:
"Yuwei, don't worry, I've remembered everything you asked me to do that day. I'll take care of it for you. I'm really sorry about today. It's my fault for not managing the household properly, and you've suffered because of it."
As he spoke, Master Sun looked at the old lady's memorial tablet and said:
"However, Mother loved you and Wan'er very much when she was alive, so you must have lunch before you leave today."
Seeing that Master Sun had already said so, Jiang Yuwei swallowed the words she was about to say and nodded to him, saying:
"Okay, Second Brother, you go ahead and do your thing, don't worry about us."
Seeing that Jiang Yuwei had agreed, Master Sun nodded and left.
Seeing that the man who had been standing next to Master Sun was still there, looking at her with a somewhat mocking gaze, Jiang Yuwei thought that she should at least thank him. So she took Wan'er's hand and walked to the man's side, about to speak.
A fair-skinned little boy rushed in from outside the door, stared at Ning Wan, and stretched out his hand, smiling:
"You must be Wan'er, the one Grandma likes so much? I'm Xiao Zuo, would you like to come play with me in the yard?"
Ning Wan was about to nod when she heard this, but then she suddenly remembered something and looked up at Jiang Yuwei.
Jiang Yuwei immediately understood. She figured she had already promised Master Sun she would stay until noon, and Ning Wan was bored anyway, so she might as well let her play with the children. She nodded and smiled at Ning Wan.
"Alright, go ahead, Wan'er. Don't go too far. Come back after playing for a while. We need to go back soon."
Ning Wan nodded obediently, then took Xiao Zuo's hand and went out to play.
Jiang Yuwei smiled slightly at the man in front of her.
"Thank you so much for helping me out of that predicament today. May I ask how I should address you?"
The man glanced at Jiang Yuwei and smiled:
"What? You've forgotten me so quickly?"
Jiang Yuwei frowned, trying hard to recall the person in her mind, feeling like she had missed something. Just as Jiang Yuwei was racking her brains, she heard the man chuckle:
"I am Xu Mohan, the eldest son of the Xu family."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Yuwei's eyes widened. She finally remembered the voice and the face. She had seen them somewhere before. It was at the Xu residence. That day, she was wearing Sun Zhaodi's maid's clothes, and the drunken young master of the Xu family mistook her for a maid and insisted that she help him change his clothes.
As Jiang Yuwei thought about it, she regretted greeting him. She simply lowered her head and quickly considered how to get away from him.
Just then, Xu Mohan seemed to see through her thoughts and said casually:
"When you rejected me that day, I thought it was because I wasn't charming enough. After you ran away, I even searched for you at the mansion for a while. Later, I found out that you weren't a maid in the Xu family. Today, it's just a small favor for me to help you out. Consider it an apology for what I did to you that day."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Yuwei lowered her head even further. That day, she saw Xu Mohan was drunk and thought that she couldn't reason with him. In a moment of desperation, she kicked Xu Mohan in a vital area to escape. Now, he actually put aside his past grievances and took the initiative to help her.
Jiang Yuwei had never felt so embarrassed. Suddenly remembering something, she stammered and began to speak:
"Well, it's getting late, I need to go find Wan'er, so I'll take my leave now."
After saying that, Jiang Yuwei fled the mourning hall as if she were escaping. Seeing this, Xu Mohan's lips curled slightly and he murmured:
"I thought this funeral would be a boring social event, but it turned out to be quite interesting."
As she spoke, Xu Mohan followed Jiang Yuwei out.
Jiang Yuwei became anxious when she couldn't find Ning Wan in the courtyard. It was almost time for dinner, and she needed to finish eating quickly so she could take Wan'er back to the shop to find Ning Huaizhi.
