Yuan Doudou's heart was melting. She liked rabbits, but had never kept one because she was afraid of the hassle.
Jin Chan wasn't playing a trick on her.
She whispered in Angie's ear, "Angie, wake up, Mommy has something to show you."
Angie shook his head and went back to sleep.
"It's a little white rabbit."
Angie rubbed his eyes and looked at Yuan Doudou, "Where is the little white rabbit?"
Yuan Doudou put Anji down and pointed to a nest of rabbits on the ground.
Angie's eyes widened, too excited to speak.
Yuan Doudou unloaded the basket, picked a few large leaves from the side, wrapped the mushrooms, and put them aside. She then laid several layers of dry grass at the bottom of the basket, bent down, picked up the mother rabbit on the ground, put her in the basket, and then lifted up the baby rabbits, placing them one by one.
On the way down the mountain, Yuan Doudou slowed down, supporting Anji with one hand and using a tree branch to probe the path with the other.
Back home, Yuan Doudou searched the house and found an unused basket. She lined it with hay and put the rabbit inside.
"Mother, the rabbit is bleeding," Angie said in a low voice.
Yuan Doudou nodded, went to find some scraps of cloth, and used them to bandage the rabbit's wounds.
The rabbit has a deep wound on its right hind leg, and blood is flowing continuously. If the bleeding is not stopped, the rabbit may not survive.
The rag was wrapped around and tied with cotton thread to temporarily stop the bleeding.
The mother rabbit was dying, and her baby rabbits were nursing on her body.
Wang walked shakily to the basket, looked at the rabbit, and sighed, "It won't survive."
"No, I'll go find Aunt Zhang; she raises sheep." Yuan Doudou had barely finished speaking when she reached the door.
In the Wang family home, Zhang Aiju is feeding sheep. The ewe has given birth and needs more nutrition.
"Auntie," Yuan Doudou greeted from outside the fence.
Zhang Aiju's eyes lit up, and she grinned, "It's Dou Dou! Come in quickly, I'll go pour you some tea."
"No need to trouble yourself, Auntie. I actually wanted to borrow some milk from you." Yuan Doudou waved her hand.
“You’re making me blush. I’m an old woman, I don’t have any milk left,” Zhang Aiju said with a laugh, covering her mouth.
Yuan Doudou's face flushed red to the roots of her ears in an instant. She was so anxious that she said the wrong thing and was extremely embarrassed.
"Don't laugh, ma'am. I was too hasty. Here's what happened: I found a litter of rabbits on the mountain. The mother rabbit lost too much blood and can no longer nurse. I came to you to buy goat milk to feed the baby rabbits."
Zhang Aiju looked at Yuan Doudou's flushed face and laughed even louder.
“What’s so difficult about that? Just bring the baby rabbits over and let them nurse from their mother goat.”
Yuan Doudou suddenly realized, "That's right, it's much more convenient to let the rabbits come and eat directly than to milk the goats and then go back to feed them."
"Auntie, you're so thoughtful! I'll go get him right now." Yuan Doudou had only taken two or three steps when Zhang Aiju called out to her.
"Dou Dou, don't worry, I'll have Qi Qiang go with you." Zhang Aiju hurriedly went into the house to call Wang Qi Qiang.
Yuan Doudou reached out to stop Zhang Aiju. Wang Qiqiang bent down and came out of the house, looking at her with a calm gaze.
"Dou Dou, from now on, Qi Qiang will feed the little rabbits. You won't have to run around like that." Zhang Aiju placed her hand behind Wang Qi Qiang and pushed him forward.
Wang Qiqiang scratched his head and strode forward.
"Qiqiang, slow down." Zhang Aiju raised her voice, afraid that her son wouldn't understand.
Wang Qiqiang is the eldest son in the family. He is twenty-two years old this year and has reached the age to get married. Zhang Aiju has been looking for a wife for him.
She likes Yuan Doudou and doesn't mind that she's been married and has children.
Wang Qiqiang slowed down, and once Yuan Doudou caught up, he took longer strides.
The two remained silent. Yuan Doudou didn't know what to say, and Wang Qiqiang dared not speak, afraid of accidentally upsetting Yuan Doudou.
When An Rong was alive, they were brothers who got along well. Now that his good brother has passed away, leaving behind an orphan and a widow, he should take care of him.
"See? They've been spending a lot of time together these past few days. The widow is about to have a second spring." Wang Cuihua, not getting any advantage, deliberately said some unpleasant things when she saw Yuan Doudou approaching.
Standing next to her was a woman with a pointed chin, her eyes filled with disdain.
Upon hearing this, Wang Qiqiang strode forward, blocking Yuan Doudou, and glared coldly at Wang Cuihua.
"Wang Qiqiang, what are you glaring at me for? She's not your wife yet, you dog!" Wang Cuihua raised her eyebrows and swore.
Wang Qiqiang's face turned bright red, his lips moved but he didn't make a sound.
Seeing this, Yuan Doudou shook her head inwardly, grabbed Wang Qiqiang's belt, and pulled him back. The 1.85-meter-tall strong man staggered and stood behind Yuan Doudou, dumbfounded, not knowing what Yuan Doudou was going to do.
"Wang Cuihua, right? I used to respect you as an elder and call you 'Auntie,' but now I see you don't deserve it at all. Cuihua, Cuihua, you're so cunning and scheming, you see everything as dirty. What are you spewing at me for? You want me to be your old man's second wife for two pounds of buckwheat noodles? Don't you feel ashamed? To tell you the truth, I haven't been able to eat for three days since I got back. I feel nauseous just thinking about it."
Yuan Doudou spoke clearly and precisely, each word piercing Wang Cuihua's heart, making her so angry that her mouth trembled incessantly.
Passersby, hearing their conversation, were all very curious and gathered around to watch the spectacle.
"Wang the matchmaker is so heartless, who would dare to ask her to be a matchmaker in the future?" the fat aunt shouted, attracting the attention of those around her.
“I’ve always felt she wasn’t a good person. Do you remember that time when she arranged for the Zhao family’s daughter to go to the Li family in the next village for a mere hundred coins? At first, she made it sound so nice that she would have no worries about food and clothing, but what happened? The following year, she was starving to death. If the Zhao family hadn’t taken her home in time, it would have been a life lost.”
"I know about this."
Everyone was talking at once, gossiping about Wang Cuihua's shameful deeds. Wang Cuihua wanted to disappear into the ground but had nowhere to go.
