Chapter 54 The Story of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl

Yuan Doudou was washing dishes in the kitchen when she sneezed twice in a row. She thought to herself, "I must be cursing someone."

After finishing the housework, Yuan Doudou sat in the yard with Anji and counted the stars.

At night, everything around is pitch black, except for the twinkling stars that illuminate the night.

"Mother, is there a river over there?" Angie pointed to the sky, opening the door to his imagination.

Yuan Doudou looked in the direction he pointed and indeed there was a faintly visible river, which was probably the legendary Milky Way.

"Anji, shall I tell you a story?" She suddenly felt a surge of maternal love.

Angie clapped his hands, "Great! I love listening to stories!"

When my grandma was alive, she would tell him the story of the magic gourd before he went to bed.

Unfortunately, Grandma is gone, and Mom doesn't seem to know how to tell stories. She's busy at home all day, either working outside.

Yuan Doudou held Anji on her lap, held his little hand, and began to tell the story of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl.

"Once upon a time, there was a man named Niulang. His parents died early, and he lived with his elder brother and sister-in-law. His elder brother and sister-in-law treated him very badly. They made him do a lot of work every day, but only gave him scraps to eat. Niulang's life was very difficult."

"Then what?"

"One day, when the cowherd was feeding the ox grass, the old ox suddenly spoke."

"Cows can talk?" Angie's mouth dropped open in disbelief.

"Anji, this is a myth. There will be even more amazing things to come."

Looking at the child's innocent eyes, Yuan Doudou's heart almost melted. No wonder many parents buy a lot of storybooks for their children. It seems that there are also people who enjoy telling stories to their children. It's so fulfilling.

"Old Niu told him that he was the reincarnation of the Golden Ox Star, and that in a few days, a fairy from heaven would come to bathe in the Jade Lotus Pond. He told Niu Lang to take away the red skirt, and that fairy would become his wife."

Yuan Doudou recounted the story from memory, but before she could finish, Anji slumped down and fell asleep.

"It seems the little guy isn't interested in the Cowherd and Weaver Girl story. He'll definitely enjoy it if we switch to Ultraman fighting monsters."

Yuan Doudou carried Anji into the house, took off his shoes and socks, and covered his belly with a blanket.

By the moonlight, she picked up a book, which was completely blank.

This is a notebook she made herself, used for drawing for Angie.

She made three notebooks in one go, one for keeping track of expenses, because without a mobile phone, her brain alone wasn't enough.

She wanted to keep the other book for Angie to use for writing; in another year, Angie would be able to attend a private school.

With her mother-in-law gone, Anrong's chances of survival are slim, so raising Anji to be successful is her core mission.

For an ordinary family, it would cost 100 taels of silver to raise a scholar to pass the county-level imperial examination, let alone a scholar to pass the provincial-level imperial examination.

As for becoming the third-ranked scholar or the top scholar, she wouldn't even dare to dream of it; it's not something that money can buy.

The next day, Yuan Doudou woke up with panda eyes and was shocked when she looked in the mirror.

"My God, her eye bags are practically dragging on the floor." She's only twenty years old, does staying up all night really have to come at such a high price?

I won't do it again; I'll never stay up late again.

Before Anji got up, Yuan Doudou went to the kitchen to boil water. She poured the boiled water into a ceramic pot and covered it with a woven vine cover to keep it warm.

"Mother."

Yuan Doudou had just finished making breakfast when she heard Anji calling from inside the house. She quickly washed her hands and went to dress Anji.

"Mother, I dreamt of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl last night. They even invited me to go up to heaven and play with their children." Anji's eyebrows danced with excitement, as if he could really go up to heaven.

"Really? It seems the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl really like you." Yuan Doudou dressed Anji and carried him off the bed.

Anji ran excitedly out of the house, looked up at the sky, and exclaimed, "Where have all the stars gone?"

The Milky Way is no longer visible.

"The moon and stars are in the sky, but when the sun comes out, its light shines through the moon and stars, so we can't see them."

Yuan Doudou did her best to popularize science for Anji. On the other hand, this era also has its own scientific knowledge system. She doesn't need to participate; Anji can still learn the knowledge he should know.

"Mother, what is this?" Angie asked, pointing to the round, bulging thing on the table.

"Hamburgers." One of her favorite foods when she's bored.

Unfortunately, this is a low-end version. It uses slices of steamed bread on the top and bottom, and a fried pork chop in the middle, along with a lettuce leaf, a tomato slice, and a little ketchup.

With limited ingredients, the taste is also much worse.

It was Angie's first time eating a hamburger, and she enjoyed it immensely, especially the fried pork chop inside.

"Mommy, you're amazing!" Angie smiled happily.

That's wonderful! With his mother around, he'll never be afraid of going hungry again.

Yuan Doudou thought about the pork chops she fried that morning. She used the leftover lard from yesterday. It was more like pan-frying than frying, as there was very little oil.

The pork was tenderloin I bought yesterday. I cut it into thick slices, pounded it with the back of a knife, coated it with flour, and then it was ready to be pan-fried.

Seeing Anji enjoying her delicious meal, Yuan Doudou felt that all the busyness of the morning was worthwhile.

"Anji, after you finish eating, Mommy is going to the greenhouse. Come with me." Anji is small, and she doesn't want to leave him alone at home.

Angie nodded. He was willing to go anywhere as long as he wasn't at home.

After locking the courtyard gate, Yuan Doudou slung a basket over her shoulder and they walked toward the greenhouse together.

Before even reaching the greenhouse, a group of people could be seen gathered at the entrance, including Wang Qiqiang.

When Aunt Pang saw Yuan Doudou arrive, she was the first to rush forward and greet her cheerfully: "Doudou, you're absolutely right, all the oyster mushrooms I got yesterday are sold out."

As she spoke, she pulled out a bulging money pouch from her bosom.

"Count it, six hundred coins." Aunt Pang was a straightforward person; she never said more or less, and she always kept her word.

Aunt Wang and Aunt Liu couldn't wait any longer and squeezed forward, saying, "Dou Dou, I took too little yesterday, I want to take more today."

Seeing how much money Aunt Pang earned, they were all envious.

Yuan Doudou took the money from Aunt Liu and Aunt Wang, a total of four hundred and fifty coins.

"DouDou, look how much money they're making. Can you help us out too?" Following behind were three or four women from the village, each carrying a bamboo basket.

Yuan Doudou was in a bit of a dilemma. Her original intention was to help everyone make money, but with so many people coming all at once, even if they harvested all the mushrooms, there wouldn't be enough to go around.

"Aunties, let's be frank. The oyster mushrooms are still in the cultivation stage, and there isn't that much production yet. It's not realistic to give everyone a supply."

As soon as Yuan Doudou spoke, the room erupted in a commotion.

Everyone chimed in, vying to let DouDou give them the oyster mushrooms first.

“I have an idea, I don’t know if you’d like it?” Yuan Doudou thought for a while, then raised her hand, interrupting their discussion.
