Chapter 34 The Long Night
The rain is still falling.
It showed no signs of abating, as if it would continue to rain all night.
Director Wu paced back and forth in his office three or four times.
Heavy rain blocked the roads, and the new security personnel that the dean had originally contacted could not get into the mountains.
The more he thought about it, the more uncertain he felt.
In the end, he put on a raincoat and took the thugs left behind by Vice Dean Zhang to search the school.
Taking the initiative is always better than sitting and waiting for death.
No matter what, they were the one with more people, and they had an overwhelming advantage against Li, the teaching assistant.
After pondering and encouraging himself for a while, Director Wu still felt that the advantage lay with him.
After greeting the gatekeeper and waiting for Xiao Wang and the others to return, the gate was locked. Only then did Director Wu, carrying an umbrella and a riot fork, lead the group to the teaching building.
......
The van that had gone out to dispose of the body finally returned to the academy through the rain.
The windshield wipers swung up and down rapidly, wiping away the raindrops hitting the windshield, but the rain was so heavy that the windshield was barely clear for more than a few seconds.
The instructor in the driver's seat had already parked the car outside the gate, but the iron gate remained closed.
Xiao Wang, sitting in the passenger seat, looked puzzled. "Is the security guard asleep?"
Through the windshield, you can still see the flashlights still on in the guardhouse.
The electrical circuits in the power distribution room were not repaired, and the generator was also damaged, so the entire campus is still without power.
"That shouldn't be the case," the instructor honked the horn a few more times, "With so many things happening today, how can the leadership allow the gatekeeper to get a normal rest?"
Seeing that the gate still didn't respond, he rolled down his car window and shouted in the pouring rain, "Brother! Open the door!!!"
A figure stood up in the guardhouse, which was blurred by the heavy rain. He seemed to glance at their location before quickly coming out wearing a raincoat.
The iron gate was slowly pulled open by the gatekeeper.
The instructor quickly rolled up the car window and started the car, heading towards the academy.
As he passed the gatekeeper behind the iron gate, Xiao Wang even craned his neck to look at the car window.
You can vaguely see the gatekeeper wearing a heavy black raincoat turning around and walking back.
Xiao Wang didn't notice anything unusual and turned his head back.
The tall, heavy iron gate was pushed up by the gatekeeper once again and locked completely.
Soaked to the bone, Xin Que entered the guardhouse and glanced down at the unconscious guard under the table.
Then she opened the door and disappeared into the rain-soaked night.
The flashlight in the guardhouse, which served as a temporary light source, swayed and remained lit.
With all power cut off, the academy, like a dark prison, sits quietly on the mountainside.
Director Wu has led a team to search the entire teaching building.
"The rooms are all empty; we didn't find anyone suspicious." The thug breathed a sigh of relief. "Director Wu, where should we search next?"
“There are too many people and too many eyes in the dormitory building,” Director Wu relaxed a little. “Go to the dormitory building first, and search the administration building last.”
The group left the teaching building in a grand procession, carrying flashlights, and walked into the rain.
Xin Que, hiding in the tree, saw these people heading straight for the dormitory building and no longer hesitated.
She was waiting for the opportunity when the administration building would fall through.
There were a total of four thugs and instructors stationed in the administration building.
Xin Que glanced at the two-story administration building, then climbed down from the tree.
"How did those leaders recruit people?" the thugs complained to their companions as they patrolled the hallway. "How did they manage to hire a murderer?"
"And they appear and disappear so mysteriously, it's giving me the creeps..."
"Damn, you talk like you have no criminal record," the man scoffed. "Don't scare yourself. No matter how powerful that guy is, he's still just a person. If he dares to walk right into our trap, we'll make sure he doesn't leave alive!"
The thug's lips twitched. "My little stunts, how could I have killed anyone? You're so arrogant, what, you've killed someone?"
The man brandished the stun gun in his hand. "I'm from the underworld. Isn't it normal for me to accidentally kill someone?"
"Alright, alright," the thug couldn't stand the man's unfiltered boasting. "If you're so great, go and kill that guy surnamed Li. That way, we brothers won't have to work overtime and suffer for this."
"Don't you believe me?" the man said, getting more animated, quickly catching up with the thug. "When I was young, I was a gang fighter, one of the toughest..."
"Holy crap!" The man stumbled, nearly tripping over something on the ground. "What the hell is that?!"
Hearing the noise behind him, the thug got goosebumps all over his body and immediately turned around with his flashlight.
The obstacle that nearly tripped the man was a flashlight that had rolled onto the ground.
The two of them breathed a sigh of relief.
I almost thought I'd stumbled upon another corpse.
“It’s out of power,” the man said, tossing the flashlight aside. “I guess someone else just left it lying around without putting it away.”
"Strange," the thug still felt something was off, "Why haven't those two guys patrolling the second floor made a move?"
The two had just relaxed when they became tense again.
"What's going on upstairs?" the thug shouted into the walkie-talkie. "Where are you guys?"
No one answered.
The two immediately sensed something was wrong.
"Go check it out!" The thug immediately grabbed his stun gun, a flashlight, and ran up the stairs with the man.
Just as the man ran up to the second floor, he heard what sounded like something hitting the ground behind him.
Turning around abruptly, the man shouted, flashlight in hand, "Who's there?!"
A man of average height and build, with his back to them, appeared to have just jumped down from a height. Upon hearing their voice, he immediately got up and ran away.
"Where's that guy surnamed Li?!" the man shouted at the thugs. "Arrest him!"
The thugs immediately rushed towards him and ran after the man.
"Splash—"
Li, the teaching assistant, seemed to have been driven to a dead end and escaped by breaking through a window.
"Quick, call someone for help!!!" The man was incredibly stubborn. He shouted at the thugs and then jumped out of the window.
The thug hadn't expected this guy to be so reckless. Left with no other option, he ran downstairs while calling for backup, "Director Wu, Assistant Instructor Li is on the playground!!!"
"Strange," the thug ran through the rain, "why did he jump down and then disappear without a trace?"
Director Wu rushed over with his team, searched around the administration building several times, and then searched the playground again, but they couldn't find Assistant Li or the man who was chasing him.
"Impossible!" The thug thought about it more and more, finding it increasingly unbelievable. "They clearly jumped out of the window one after the other..."
For some unknown reason, the thug shone a flashlight onto the broken window on the second floor.
When the others saw the thug suddenly open his eyes wide as if he had been choked, his mouth agape and unable to say anything, they instinctively followed his gaze to the second floor.
The man who was chasing Assistant Li was hanging upside down below the window frame, his ankles suspended by an electric wire, swaying back and forth.
The bloody hole on his neck was all too familiar.
The flashlight in Director Wu's hand clattered and rolled into the rain.
When Xin Que pried open the door to the dean's office, her raincoat was still dripping wet.
The raindrops seemed to be mixed with some viscous red liquid, which quickly seeped into the luxurious carpet of the dean's office, leaving a trail of marks with Xin Que's footsteps.
It extends all the way behind the desk.
The documents were scattered all over the floor.
Xin Que's gaze fell on a man's business photo on a color-printed document.
"Zhouzi River?"
