The small black figure slipped silently into the kitchen without Su Yun'er noticing.
Just as she was concentrating on preparing the ingredients for the hot pot, she suddenly heard a noise behind her.
The sound came suddenly, startling Su Yun'er so much that she almost dropped the knife in her hand.
She quickly turned around, but saw nothing.
"Could something have fallen over in the yard?"
Su Yun'er put down the knife and walked to the kitchen door, looking out into the courtyard.
But there was nothing unusual in any corner.
Full of questions, Su Yun'er turned around to continue preparing the hot pot ingredients, but this time when she turned around, she discovered the source of the noise.
On one side of the table where the chicken head was placed, a small white, hairy claw was trying hard to reach for the chicken head.
Su Yun'er recognized it as a kitten's paw; the paw was white, but the fur on the leg was black.
This is what people often refer to as white gloves.
The kitten tried very hard, and finally its sharp little claws hooked onto the chicken's head. After a few more tries, it managed to pull the chicken's head off the table.
The kitten lunged forward, trying to grab the chicken's head, but just as its two front paws grasped the chicken's head, someone grabbed it by the scruff of its neck, sealing its fate.
"Little guy, so you were the one who scared me just now." Su Yun'er grabbed the kitten by the scruff of its neck and pulled it up to her face.
The kitten stared wide-eyed in terror, its four legs kicking and thrashing desperately in the air, but it couldn't break free.
"Meow...meow..." it meowed anxiously, its tone sounding like a plea.
Su Yun'er supported the kitten's bottom with her other hand, and changed her grip from pulling on the back of its neck to embracing it like a child.
The kitten, lying on its back with its belly up, had all four legs curled up because of its position. It looked at Su Yun'er quietly but with a helpless expression.
"Your big eyes are so round! Oh, is that an egg? So you're a little male cat."
Su Yun'er carefully observed the kitten's fur color.
It is black from its forehead to its tail and four legs, but the area around its mouth, its belly, and its four paws are covered in white fur.
Like a black cat sheriff.
The ancients gave this type of cat, with its elegant and beautiful name, "Black Clouds Covering Snow."
"You're so thin, I can feel your bones when I hug you," Su Yun'er said with a touch of heartache.
In her past life, Su Yun'er also owned a cat, an American Shorthair. The happiest thing for Su Yun'er, a working professional, was seeing her cat sitting at the door to welcome her when she came home every day.
"Are you hungry, little kitty?" Su Yun'er said, closing the kitchen door before putting the kitten down.
"I'll prepare some food for you."
Because the door was closed, the cat couldn't run out, but it seemed to understand human speech. After hearing Su Yun'er speak, it meowed and began to follow Su Yun'er closely, meowing.
There was meat stewing in the pot, but it had ginger slices and pepper added, making the flavor too strong for the kitten to like.
She took out another chicken, quickly thawed it, separated the chicken breast, cut it into large pieces, and steamed it in a pot.
The steamed chicken breast was cooked without any seasoning, and the snow-white meat exuded the most original aroma of chicken.
Su Yun'er shredded the cooked chicken breast into small strips, let them cool together with the broth from the steaming dish, and then gave them to the kitten.
"Little kitty, eat up, aren't you hungry?"
The kitten had already smelled the aroma of the meat. He couldn't wait to bury his head in the plate, sniff it a few times, lick it with his little tongue, and then began to eat the meat in big mouthfuls.
Su Yun'er was certain that he was starving, and was probably a stray cat.
Everyone here is so poor they have nothing to eat, and with the weather getting colder, there's nothing to eat outdoors. The kitten has been starving for who knows how long.
He must have smelled the aroma of stewed meat, which led him to Su Yun'er's house.
The kitten ate with great relish, and soon devoured most of the plate of meat.
Worried that he would overeat, Su Yun'er removed the meat and gave him a new dish of water.
The kitten immediately started drinking water again.
After drinking half the water, he was finally full. He pawed at the ground around the water bowl a few times with his front paws, then meowed and walked over to the side, found a corner, squatted down, and began to lick his fur and wash his face.
Seeing the kitten's clever appearance, Su Yun'er liked it from the bottom of her heart, and she wanted to keep it as a pet.
"Little Tree's mother? Huh? Why is the door closed?" Old Mrs. Chen's voice came from outside the door.
Guessing that Old Mrs. Chen was about to push open the door, Su Yun'er was worried that the cat would take the opportunity to run away, so she quickly grabbed the cat by the scruff of its neck and picked it up.
At the same time, Old Mrs. Chen pushed open the door.
"Little Tree's mom, why is the door still closed?" The words had barely left her lips when she saw the little creature in Su Yun'er's arms. "Where did this cat come from?"
“Mom, he came here on his own. Look at him, how handsome he is.”
Su Yun'er hugged the cat and approached Old Mrs. Chen.
"It really is true. He has big, round eyes and a nice coat, but he's too thin. Look at you holding him like this, he doesn't fuss at all, he's quite well-behaved."
"Yes, Mother, I want him. Otherwise, how will he survive with this heavy snow and wind outside?"
Grandma Chen hesitated for a moment, but then nodded: "Okay, keep it. What a pitiful little thing. The old folks all say that stray cats are lucky stars, and once they come to your home, you have to keep them."
Su Yun'er knew that the reason for Old Mrs. Chen's hesitation was because she was worried about the cost of raising a cat.
