Chapter 128 Building a Woodshed

The next day, when the two woke up, they found that the outside was already frozen. It was already the end of October, and the weather was getting colder and colder.

Lu Chuan and Xu Han ate breakfast while planning their day.

Lu Chuan said, "The temperature is getting lower and lower, so we can't wait any longer to start making charcoal. Let's build the woodshed today!"

“Okay, let’s go cut bamboo after we finish eating!” Xu Han said.

"I can cut the bamboo myself. You stay home and feed the livestock. If you have enough time, go and cut some thatch nearby. Pick me up from the bamboo grove at lunchtime."

"Okay, I understand!" Xu Han said and began to eat quickly.

After breakfast, the two went their separate ways. Lu Chuan went to the bamboo forest, while Xu Han went to the backyard first.

After feeding the chickens, ducks, and geese in the backyard, I cleaned up the pens and gave some hay to the corn.

It's been quite tiring for the corn to pull the millstone lately, so I gave it some extra corn kernels as a reward.

Since Corn came to our home, we've been feeding and caring for it well. It's no longer as skinny as it used to be. Although it's not very fat yet, its fur has become much smoother and it's not like it used to be at all.

After feeding the corn, Xu Han went to the front yard and swept the ground, then mopped the floor inside the house before taking her basket outside to cut thatch.

The leaves outside have long since fallen, and the thatch has turned yellow and withered. It can be used directly after being cut, without needing to be dried.

The mountain grass was everywhere, and in no time Xu Han had cut a lot of grass. Then she walked towards the bamboo forest. Lu Chuan should be almost finished too.

When Xu Han arrived, Lu Chuan was sawing bamboo, cutting it to the appropriate length. Lu Chuan had measured the length at home beforehand, so he could just cut it directly so it would fit into his space and wouldn't need to be trimmed again when he got home.

Xu Han also helped put the already sawn bamboo into her space, and then put the bamboo branches in to take back and dry them for firewood.

Because the space inside is not very large, it will be filled up in no time, so Xu Han can only go home first, put the things at home, and then do it again.

Once home, place the bamboo branches on the open ground outside the yard, and then put the bamboo poles inside the yard. They will be ready to use when building the firewood shed later, without needing to go outside to get them.

After placing them, they returned to the bamboo grove, and once it was full, they were sent back again. The bamboo branches were all fluffy and hadn't been carefully arranged, so they took up quite a bit of space.

There's no other way but to do a rough tidying up today; there's no time to do it carefully, otherwise the woodshed won't be finished today.

When Xu Han returned, Lu Chuan had already finished pruning all the bamboo and put it all into his spatial storage. Only then did the two of them go home together.

After arriving home and resting for a while, Xu Han took out lunch from her spatial storage. She knew she wouldn't have had time to cook lunch today, given how busy she was.

After lunch, Lu Chuan and Xu Han dismantled the dogs' old kennels and planned to build a woodshed there.

If the houses are built along the existing woodshed, the row of houses on the east side will be too long and the ventilation will be poor.

Unfortunately, they had no choice but to build a woodshed in front of the path leading to the backyard, so that it wouldn't feel too crowded.

Fortunately, the front yard wasn't small either. At the very front of the path, there was a small two-room woodshed, followed by a millstone and a roasting oven. The distance between them was just right, so it didn't feel crowded.

The ventilation in the yard will not be affected, and there is still a large open space in the middle of the yard, so it will not interfere with the usual drying of things.

After dismantling the doghouse, Lu Chuan selected a location and removed the corner stone slabs so they could be used to bury bamboo later.

After removing the stone slabs, Lu Chuan dug large pits at the four corners to bury the support pillars later.

Lu Chuan was digging a hole nearby, while Xu Han was selecting suitable bamboo.

The woodshed and house we built today are the same height and shape, except that the house is built with bricks and tiles, while the woodshed is made of bamboo.

Therefore, the main beams and support columns used must be carefully selected, otherwise they will easily break down later.

All the bamboo was selected, sorted, and neatly arranged. The pit in Luchuan was also dug.

Xu Han held the bamboo plant in place, and Lu Chuan began burying it. After burying it, he pounded it firmly to make the bamboo more stable.

After all four bamboo poles were buried, the roof beam above was fixed in place. This roof beam was triangular and required Lu Chuan to do it himself.

Xu Han only knows theoretical knowledge; Lu Chuan is more reliable in this area. She can do smaller things herself, but for things that require craftsmanship to fix the framework, Lu Chuan is the one who needs to do them.

Xu Han couldn't offer much help; she could only follow behind Lu Chuan and assist him.

Because the woodshed we're building today isn't as small as the donkey shed, and it has the same structure as the house, it's being built very slowly. If nothing unexpected happens, it definitely won't be finished today.

After Lu Chuan finished building the three triangular roof beams, he began to build the other side of the wall. Since two of the walls were adjacent to the main wall, the raised part could be reinforced with bamboo later. The other side, however, would need to be entirely enclosed with bamboo.

The walls were much easier to build; you just needed to bury bamboo according to the height. The two of them worked together and completed the task quickly.

After finishing one side of the wall, Lu Chuan started building the roof. If he wanted the roof to be sturdy, it needed to be supported by a keel.

Lu Chuan was fixing the keel on the roof, while Xu Han was helping by passing bamboo poles below.

After the keel was secured, it was already dark. The two could only continue building it the next day. It was too dark to see clearly, and the structure wouldn't be sturdy enough, so they decided not to continue.

After a busy afternoon, climbing up and down was really tiring. Xu Han was passing bamboo up and down, and her arms were sore.

I sat in the main room, had some tea, and rested for a while before going to the kitchen to prepare dinner.

After a long day, let's just have something simple to eat! It's been a while since we've had noodles, so let's have beef noodles today!

Cut the beef into strips, stir-fry it in a pot, add water and bring it to a boil, then add the noodles that have been rolled out in advance. After seasoning, just before serving, add the sweet potato leaves that have been picked last time and have been touched by frost. The flavor of the dried vegetables is instantly brought out.

"These noodles smell so good!" Lu Chuan said.

"Yes! I added dried sweet potato leaves today, so the taste will definitely be different from the beef noodles I usually make. Try it and see if you like it."

Because today's noodles were made with mixed grain flour, Xu Han made a huge pot of them, and the dogs got a share too.
