Chapter 13 Bamboo Forest

Thankfully, it doesn't freeze at night anymore. Otherwise, it would be even harder to dry them.

I went into the kitchen and saw that the dough I made this morning had risen properly. I quickly took it out and started kneading. A whole big bowl of dough! Just looking at it made me exhausted!

She poured half of the dough from the basin and started making steamed buns. Just then, Lu Chuan returned from cutting bamboo, dragging a large bundle of it. He put down the bamboo, went to the kitchen, and saw Xu Han making steamed buns. He asked, "Do we need to start a fire now?"

"No need, there's still one pot left to cook! You should rest for a while!" Xu Han said.

Upon hearing this, Lu Chuan didn't say anything and turned to go to the yard to chop bamboo.

Xu Han cut all the steamed buns into pieces. To save time, she didn't knead them into round buns, but instead rolled them into thick noodles, which she then cut into rolls. It's just for our family! No need for all that trouble!

In modern times, my mom usually cuts and rolls steamed buns when she makes them at home. She only makes round steamed buns for Chinese New Year.

After preparing all the steamed buns, let them rise a second time. Then, seeing Lu Chuan sawing bamboo in the yard, I went over to help!

Lu Chuan said, "You've had a long day too, take a break! I'll be done in a minute!"

Hearing this, Xu Han didn't say anything more and walked to the side, pulling up a chair to watch Lu Chuan saw bamboo. She was exhausted from pasting shoe soles and making steamed buns all day, her back and waist aching.

For dinner tonight, Xu Han cooked some porridge and stir-fried a plate of spicy and sour cabbage, which she ate with freshly made hot steamed buns.

It would taste even better with some pickled vegetables! But we don't have any pickled vegetables at home, so we'll have to wait until the vegetables are ripe and then make some ourselves! Pickled vegetables are also very delicious with porridge…

The next morning, Xu Han boiled four eggs, one for each of them, and the other two for the two dogs, Hei Feng and Hei Dian. She also cooked sweet potato porridge. After eating, the two went to the bamboo forest to cut bamboo.

Lu Chuan led Xu Han out of their house and walked for about 40 minutes until they arrived at the bamboo forest. A vast bamboo grove stretched before them, seemingly endless. Each bamboo stalk was as large as a bowl, and looked incredibly thick!

Looking at the vast bamboo forest, Xu Han thought to herself, "When spring comes, I can dry lots of bamboo shoots."

Lu Chuan was chopping bamboo on the side, while Xu Han was carrying a basket and searching with her head down, wondering if there were any winter bamboo shoots here!

Xu Han searched for winter bamboo shoots based on her memories of surfing the internet in her previous life. First, she checked for bulges and cracks, as these usually indicated the presence of bamboo shoots. Then, she followed the direction corresponding to the top of the bamboo. After only two minutes of searching, Xu Han found a winter bamboo shoot.

Xu Han quickly took out a hoe and started digging for winter bamboo shoots. It had just rained not long ago, so they were easy to dig.

Perhaps no one else has been to this bamboo forest before; I found so many bamboos after just circling the perimeter! Before long, I felt like I couldn't carry them all.

Then Xu Han secretly put some winter bamboo shoots in her spatial storage and continued digging until Lu Chuan finished and called her back. Only then did Xu Han stop.

Looking at the bamboo shoots on the ground in the space, there are enough for several meals.

On the way back, Xu Han carried bamboo shoots on her back, and Lu Chuan dragged a large bundle of bamboo. Both of them were carrying heavy loads, so it took them longer than when they came.

Lu Chuan said that there is another bamboo forest over two hills, but the bamboo there is much thinner than the bamboo here.

They're not the same variety. The bamboo shoots here also come out a bit later than those here.

The two walked and stopped frequently, finally arriving home. It was lunchtime, and Xu Han went to cook. Lu Chuan continued sawing bamboo.

Today, Xu Han plans to make a simple egg noodle dish, which is delicious and convenient.

After dinner, we went to the backyard to build a chicken coop. First, we dismantled the old coop and dried the old bamboo to keep for firewood. Because the bamboo was quite thick, Lu Chuan had already cut it in half.

Lu Chuan first dug a ditch around the chicken coop, then left a space for the exit. He then planted bamboo in the rest of the area.

Actually, the area to be fenced off isn't very big. Two sides are against the wall, so you only need to fence off the other two sides, which is quite fast.

After building the chicken coop, they started building the duck coop, and then built a smaller chicken coop next to it. They plan to buy hens to feed the ducks directly, so the ducks can start laying eggs as soon as they are brought home, without having to wait for the chicks to grow up.

After the enclosure is finished, start building the coop. The coop doesn't need to be too high, since it's for the chickens to live in.

Simply bury several sturdy bamboo stalks in a suitable location, then tie the bamboo poles together with hemp rope to form a row. Place thatch on top, and weigh it down with bamboo poles and stones.

Using the same method, I made another door, installed it, and it worked quite well.

After finishing these tasks, Lu Chuan wrapped things up, and Xu Han went to boil water for a bath.

When it was time for dinner, Xu Han took out the winter bamboo shoots she had dug up that day, planning to make a stir-fried winter bamboo shoots with cured pork and a cold winter bamboo shoot salad. The main dish would still be sweet potato and brown rice!

These past few days it's been nothing but cabbage, radishes, and potatoes. I haven't had any fresh vegetables in ages. How could I miss out on all these winter bamboo shoots I dug up!

First, peel the bamboo shoots, then blanch them to remove their bitterness. These bamboo shoots only need to be blanched; soaking is unnecessary, as they don't have a very strong bitter taste.

Place the blanched bamboo shoots in cold water and set aside. Heat oil and stir-fry the cured pork, then add dried chili peppers and garlic cloves to sauté until fragrant. Add the bamboo shoots and stir-fry briefly before serving.

Clean the pan, roast the dried chilies over low heat, chop them into chili powder, place them on top of the cold bamboo shoot salad, pour hot oil over them to release their aroma, and then secretly add a little sesame oil, pepper, and MSG. The flavor will immediately come out.

At the dinner table, everyone silently buried their heads in their food. Lu Chuan felt that their standard of living had improved dramatically since Xu Han took over cooking. The food not only tasted good but also looked appetizing, and before he knew it, he was stuffed again.

Now, thinking back to those years when I lived alone, what kind of food did I eat? I just barely survived. I wasted so much delicious food.

I've never even considered digging up bamboo shoots to take home and eat. I don't know how to cook them, and I can't even remember how. After all, I usually just boil vegetables. As long as they're cooked, that's fine; I don't care about the taste.

After dinner, Lu Chuan said, "These winter bamboo shoots are really delicious. I'll go dig some more tomorrow to eat."

Xu Han had the same idea; winter bamboo shoots could be dug up and dried. However, the journey was long, and carrying them back would be exhausting! Plus, she couldn't carry many at a time. It would be even better if they could be stored in her spatial storage!

But how could she tell Lu Chuan? Spring was just around the corner! The trees were about to sprout! The wasteland outside hadn't been cleared yet! Xu Han was anxious!

Lu Chuan was incredibly perceptive! Seeing Xu Han's expression, he knew there were things he didn't know! But Xu Han wouldn't say, and he couldn't help her!

Lu Chuan could sense her difference to some extent!

So he said, "If anything happens to you, you must tell me, so I can help you. Although we haven't known each other for very long, and you may not trust me enough yet, you are my wife! You must believe that no matter what, I will never hurt you!"
