Chapter 38 Going Home to Pick Wild Roses

First, I'll collect the fish baskets I set out yesterday. After a night, there are many more fish in the baskets today than yesterday.

It was completely full. After pouring it all out, the fish and shrimp were mixed together. There were more than two buckets, and there were also several very large fish, weighing about five pounds each.

We'll marinate and dry all these big fish! We'll save them to eat slowly later!

After collecting them all, we'll put more fish in the basket, and collect them one more time before heading back.

After setting the fish traps, the two continued their separate activities as they had the day before! Xu Han went to collect wild duck eggs, while Lu Chuan went to catch wild ducks!

Lu Chuan was busy like this until lunchtime. He took the ten ducks he had hunted that day to find Xu Han to have lunch together!

Today's time was almost the same as yesterday's, but Lu Chuan caught half as many ducks as yesterday.

Perhaps because of yesterday's hunting, some of the ducks were frightened and flew away, while others became more wary and were not easy to catch!

Xu Han collected far fewer duck eggs today than yesterday. Yesterday, the eggs were more concentrated, and today she wasted some time searching for them, only managing to collect seven baskets. That's three baskets less than yesterday!

The two found a clean and spacious place to sit down, took out the food from their spatial storage, and began to eat!

After finishing her meal, she sat on the ground and rested for a while before preparing to return home. Although she had only been away from home for a day, Xu Han was still very eager to go home.

Even when I'm away from home, I still worry about my livestock. I wonder how my chickens, ducks, and geese are doing!

As usual, we went to the river to collect the fish in our baskets first, and by the end of the morning, we had filled a wooden bucket with fish! That was quite good!

In just one day and one night, they collected five wooden buckets of fish and shrimp, which was quite a good harvest!

The two walked home in the direction they came from! The route they took was slightly different from the one they came by. Along the way, they encountered many prickly vegetative plants, all of which were edible, some yellow, some red, and some black!

Because we were in a hurry, we only picked a little bit as a snack to enjoy the freshness. We'll come back to pick more when we have more time!

The return journey was much faster than the journey there; the sun had just set when the two arrived home.

As soon as they opened the gate, they heard chirping sounds coming from the backyard. Lu Chuan quickly ran to the backyard to feed the chickens and ducks, while Xu Han rested for a bit before getting up to go to the kitchen to prepare dinner.

First, take out some corn kernels and rice, rinse them clean, put them in a pot, and cook them into a porridge to drink later!

Place seven or eight eggs on the steamer rack and steam until cooked. Then add today's main dish and the black-spotted, black-winded main dish, and heat them up directly on the steamer rack!

Take out some lamb liver from the space and stir-fry it; it's delicious too!

For a vegetarian dish, let's make a cucumber salad! Smash the cucumber into chunks, add soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, MSG, salt, pepper, and minced garlic. Toss well and it's ready to eat! Crisp and delicious…

After finishing, Lu Chuan returned to the kitchen from the backyard. During the two days he was away, the chicken and duck coop had become extremely dirty. After feeding the livestock, he cleaned it up again!

After the two finished dinner, they began sorting the fish and shrimp they had caught over the past two days. They first poured the fish and shrimp into a large basin and then picked out the shrimp.

Let's sort and process the different fish! Remove the internal organs and scales, then take them to the backyard for a thorough cleaning!

There are already mosquitoes in the backyard. I'll go up the mountain and get some mugwort to fumigate them!

There aren't many shrimp, but it's enough for a few meals! They're all small shrimp, not any very big ones! These small shrimp will also be delicious stir-fried with chives!

After getting ready, it was already quite late, so I quickly washed up and went to bed...

I slept without any dreams.

The next day, Lu Chuan went to collect the game from the traps and the fish baskets he had set the day before, as usual. Unlike usual, Xu Han went hunting with him today. Because Xu Han was going to pick wild raspberries!

The two set off early to collect the fish baskets. Today's harvest was excellent, with a full two and a half buckets.

When I have time, I'll weave a few more fish baskets. After the drought, the river will be dry, and then there will be no fish to eat.

After walking for about an hour, Xu Han saw the prickly pear tree many times and marked it along the way. She then sent Lu Chuan hunting, and after agreeing on a meeting time and place, she began picking prickly pears herself.

A single thorny berry tree in the mountains can produce a huge grove of fruit. The fruit is large and round, almost the size of grapes, and one tree is enough to harvest for a long time.

Along the way, Xu Han picked the fruit and marked the way for herself so that she wouldn't get lost later!

Xu Han picked and popped the fruits into her mouth as she went. They were so delicious! Where could she find these wild fruits in modern times?

Xu Han is like a mouse that has fallen into a rice jar! Mine, mine, all mine!

The wild raspberries are just as hard to pick as mulberries, but they are a bit bigger and the tree canopy is a bit shorter. So even after a whole day of picking, I only managed to fill a little over four baskets.

Seeing that it was almost time, they followed the marks and black dots they had made on their way there and returned to the place they had agreed to meet Lu Chuan.

When they arrived, they found Lu Chuan already waiting there! So the two of them didn't delay and went straight home!

We passed by the fish baskets, picked them up, and hurried home together!

After arriving home, Lu Chuan took care of the chickens and ducks, while Xu Han cooked. Every day felt like there were so many things to do, and no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't finish.

Dinner was kept simple, so Xu Han took out the dumplings she had made earlier and started cooking them.

During dinner, Xu Han said, "Why don't you skip hunting tomorrow? When I came back today, I saw a lot of new weeds growing in the fields. They're growing so fast; we'll have to pull them again."

"Okay, then I won't go hunting tomorrow after I finish collecting the game. I'll stay home and take care of some things."

"We don't have much firewood left at home. All the miscellaneous branches from the land we cleared are about to burn. We also have some bamboo shoots from last time that we haven't cooked yet!"

"It's overflowing, it's time to clean it out, otherwise we won't be able to fit anything in!"

"Okay, then we'll use the remaining firewood to cook the bamboo shoots tomorrow, and I'll go chop firewood the day after tomorrow!"

"Okay! I'll start cooking now, and if we don't have enough firewood, we'll cook more next time we have firewood!"

After dinner, Lu Chuan continued weaving fish baskets, while Xu Han picked mulberries from the space.

The next morning, after Xu Han finished breakfast, she filled two pots with bamboo shoots and started cooking them.

While I was cooking bamboo shoots, I went to the backyard and picked the cucumbers that had ripened in the last two days, then put them into my spatial storage.

Many tomatoes were ripe, and they were all picked and stored in the space.

Trim the forks on the tomato seedlings, and the forks on the peppers also need to be trimmed.

I figured it was about time, so I took the bamboo shoots out and started cooking the next batch.

I spent the whole morning constantly shuttling back and forth between the kitchen and the backyard.

After finishing his hunt, Lu Chuan went to the wasteland outside the courtyard to weed.
