Chapter 58 Peanuts and Edamame

"Okay, I understand. Is there anything else you need?" Lu Chuan asked again.

"Buy a little bit of whatever you need! Don't miss out on seafood if there's any! Don't buy too much at once, you have a long trip ahead of you! Too much will be heavy and you'll get tired carrying it back."

"You can buy it in multiple installments. Let me know if you need anything, and we'll go to the county town together!"

"I understand! Don't worry!"

"Do you have any more money? I'll give you some more!" Xu Han said, preparing to take out the silver.

Lu Chuan quickly grabbed him and said, "I still have money! These little things won't cost much. I'll ask you for money when I'm short!"

Xu Han didn't press the matter, knowing that Lu Chuan wasn't the type to be indecisive. So she let it go.

The two ate and chatted about everyday things at home, and they were very happy.

This is the life Xu Han has always longed for in modern times: working at sunrise and resting at sunset.

Although there is no mobile network, every day is very fulfilling.

Although I sometimes feel very tired, I am also very happy. Seeing the results of my labor gives me a great sense of accomplishment.

After the two finished dinner, Lu Chuan, as usual, went to wash the dishes and boil water for the bath, while Xu Han started to gather up the dried vegetables in the yard to prevent them from getting wet again due to the dew.

Bringing everything inside was a big undertaking. We put all the dried cucumbers and potatoes together, and also put the dried green beans in a winnowing basket so we wouldn't have to hang them on racks to dry tomorrow if there was spare space.

The dried green beans are almost done drying and can be collected tomorrow. The dried potatoes and cucumbers need to be dried for another day.

After getting ready, Xu Han took her change of clothes and went to the bathroom to take a shower.

After showering, Lu Chuan washed their clothes again. Whenever he had time, Lu Chuan would help with housework; he wasn't chauvinistic at all, and he would proactively help with laundry, washing dishes, and cooking.

Xu Han was quite satisfied with this. Thankfully, Lu Chuan didn't have that kind of male chauvinism, believing that men should stay away from the kitchen and housework. Otherwise, Xu Han would have been furious.

Household chores are a shared responsibility; one person can't bear the entire burden alone. Mutual understanding is essential for a lasting relationship.

Lu Chuan went to do the laundry, but Xu Han wasn't idle either. She used the time to continue making clothes and shoes.

The house has solar-powered flashlights, and the walls are painted with lime, so it's very bright inside at night when you turn on the flashlights.

It doesn't affect making clothes at night. Besides, it gets dark late and light early now, and we also take a nap at noon, so the weather isn't particularly cold yet.

Going to sleep as soon as it gets dark is a waste of time.

The two of them didn't go to bed until around ten o'clock.

A good night's sleep...

After the rooster crowed, the two got up one after another. After breakfast, they mopped the floor, wiped the table, and took the quilts out to air them.

The dried vegetables we brought in yesterday also need to be taken out to dry. After finishing that, we went to the backyard and first collected the chicken and duck eggs.

Now the chickens and ducks have started laying eggs one after another. Xu Han can collect a lot of chicken and duck eggs every day, more than she can eat. Xu Han put them all into her space for safekeeping.

Eggs are also an essential part of daily food. With the natural disasters of the next four years, the water in the space will only be enough for the two of them and their dog for daily drinking, and even that will be tight. It might not even be enough.

We definitely won't be able to feed these chickens and ducks in the future. Then we won't have any eggs to eat, so we need to save up as much as possible now!

After collecting the eggs, I cleaned the chicken coop, sprinkled some lime to disinfect it, and fed the chickens. That was when I finished taking care of the chicken coop.

Then, right after that, the vegetable picking began. Every day is like this; it seems like there's nothing much to do, but there are always so many things to keep me busy.

These are all everyday, mundane, and often overlooked household chores, and it is precisely these overlooked chores that are most tiring.

After finishing everything, the sun got too strong, so I had to go back inside to make clothes and pants to avoid the sun.

After lunch break, Xu Han cooked all the snails she had raised a few days ago and put them in her space to eat.

Then Xu Han carried a basket on her back to the cornfield, first breaking off the corn kernels, and then cutting off the corn stalks.

Walking around in the cornfield, you get scratched by the corn leaves, which is really itchy. Xu Han was wearing long sleeves and pants, and her face was covered in sweat, and her hair was soaked.

After working for a while, I sat down to rest. I took out a bottle of Coke and a bowl of ice jelly from my storage space. After eating them, I felt much better, as the heat in my body subsided.

After resting for a while, they continued working. They only stopped after breaking off about ten baskets of fruit.

They arrived at the soybean field and saw that the soybeans had grown plump and were ready to be cooked. They took out a sickle and started harvesting them.

Green soybeans can be used to cook edamame, or added as a side dish when cooking duck or chicken.

You can also add it when making porridge or congee; it tastes especially good that way.

After harvesting a lot more green beans, Lu Chuan returned, and Xu Han also stopped. The two went home together.

Lu Chuan went to the county town today and brought back a lot of things.

Xu Han bought some of everything she wanted: peas, peanuts, brown sugar, and raisins. She also bought some other miscellaneous items.

Seeing that Lu Chuan had bought peanuts, Xu Han thought she would boil some edamame and peanuts first, and then soak them for a while after boiling. They would be very flavorful when eaten in the evening.

First, pick the edamame, then wash the edamame and peanuts, put them in a pot and add water to cover them.

Then add an appropriate amount of salt, star anise, cinnamon, bay leaves and other spices, and add more chili peppers. It will taste even better if you make it spicy and numbing.

After bringing it to a boil over high heat, simmer it over low heat for a while, then soak it in salt water to infuse the flavor. It's ready to eat at dinner time.

After finishing these tasks, Xu Han led Lu Chuan to pick some sweet potato stalks and leaves from the sweet potato field before it got dark.

We'll use the sweet potato leaves to make sweet potato leaf steamed buns later; it's the season for them now. We'll use the sweet potato stems to dry tomorrow.

They picked the fruit until it got dark before getting up and going home.

Back home, Xu Han made sweet potato buns for dinner, and also stir-fried a meat dish. Combined with the edamame and peanuts, it was quite a feast.

Just as Xu Han had expected, Lu Chuan really enjoyed the peanut and edamame dish. He ate them one after another like snacks, and with beer, he couldn't stop eating them.

The two of them immediately showed off a small bowl of edamame and peanuts.

Xu Han is never stingy when it comes to food. Knowing that she and Lu Chuan had been quite physically depleted, she has been providing them with nourishing food.
