The next morning, after washing up, the two took sickles and went to the wasteland to harvest beans.
Harvesting beans is more troublesome than harvesting corn! Bean plants are shorter, so you have to bend over all the time to work, which is more tiring!
Hold the beans in one hand and cut them with a sickle in the other. Pile the cut bean stalks together and take them home to dry in a little while.
The two continued cutting beans until noon before stopping. Xu Han put the beans into her spatial storage, then transported them home and spread them out on the ground to dry.
After a short lunch break, they continued cutting beans until it was completely dark and they could no longer see, before finally going home.
We only harvested about two acres of soybeans today, and there are still some left. We should be able to finish harvesting them all by tomorrow morning.
After a simple dinner, they didn't even bother peeling the corn anymore, they were just too tired. After taking a shower, they went straight to bed and fell asleep!
The next day, Xu Han got up just as dawn was breaking, determined to finish harvesting all the beans in the field that morning.
Despite his exhaustion, he got up and started working again.
Another morning passed, and the two finally finished harvesting all the beans in the field.
Back home, Xu Han was so hot that she didn't even want to eat. After taking a shower, she lay down on the bed for a nap.
The autumn harvest is really exhausting. If the crops in the field are not harvested in time, the bean pods will burst open when exposed to the sun.
So even though I'm exhausted every day and don't want to do anything anymore, I can't stop and rest for even a moment.
In these two short days, the sun has been very strong every day. After being exposed to the sun, when we harvested the beans at noon today, some of the bean pods were so dry that they burst open.
Fortunately, we've finally finished harvesting all the beans, so we can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
When Xu Han woke up, Lu Chuan was no longer beside her. She heard banging and knocking sounds coming from the yard; Lu Chuan must be pounding beans outside.
The harvested beans all have stalks attached, so the beans and stalks need to be separated.
After being exposed to the sun, the beans are very dry. If you tap them slightly, the pods will burst open, and the beans will fall under the straw.
With each hammer blow, a clattering sound could be heard, the sound of bean pods bursting open.
When Xu Han came into the yard, she saw Lu Chuan using a stick as thick as an arm to beat the bean stalks.
"Do you have any cylindrical stones at home? It would be faster to crush them with stones. Hammering beans like this is too tiring, and your arms won't be able to take it!" Xu Han asked quickly upon seeing this.
"We didn't have any round stones; we forgot to buy one beforehand! We've never grown crops before, so we didn't have these tools!"
“It was my oversight; I didn’t even think of that. I’ll go outside and see if there are any suitable ones, and bring one back. I remember there are a lot of rocks on that hillside over there!” Xu Han said before walking out.
She searched all the way but couldn't find a suitable stone. Just as Xu Han was about to go home, she saw a stone covered by vegetation.
It is about 100 centimeters tall and about 50 centimeters in diameter. Isn't this size just right?
Xu Han hurriedly ran over to take a look. First, she cleared away all the weeds and branches covering the stone, and then she could see the shape of the stone clearly.
Overall, the size is appropriate, but it is not very smooth and has some bumps and pits.
It doesn't matter. Xu Han remembers that there are stonemason's tools at home. She can fix them herself when she gets home. It's better to have something than nothing.
Xu Han put the stone into her spatial storage and headed home.
"Look what I found! But it's not very smooth. Let's use some tools to fix it and see if it's usable!" Xu Han said to Lu Chuan, taking out the stone.
"This is great, the size is just right. It doesn't matter if it's not smooth, I can just use a tool to chisel it a little, which will save me a lot of work!"
After saying that, Lu Chuan went to the tool shed to get a chisel and then began to chisel the stone.
It has to be said that the tools at home are really complete. This is probably because they are the only residents in the neighborhood. If they need a certain tool, they can't borrow it from home or other places.
So it's best to have a set of all kinds of tools, whether you need them or not, so you can use them directly when you need them, which makes everything much more convenient.
Otherwise, it would be troublesome to go to the county town to buy whatever you need, so it's better to make your own tools! Over time, my tool-making skills improved.
Xu Han watched Lu Chuan chiseling stone, realizing she couldn't help, and then said...
"I'll go to the bean field to see if any beans have fallen and pick them up so they don't go to waste!"
"Alright, go ahead!"
Xu Han carried a basket to the field and, after searching for a while, actually found some beans. After searching the entire field, she filled a whole basket with bean stalks!
After processing, these beans are enough to cook several meals. Of course, we can't waste them; we'll take them all home!
“Look, I picked up so many! I was very careful when harvesting, but some still fell to the ground!” Xu Han said to Lu Chuan.
"That's quite a lot! Enough for several meals." Lu Chuan helped pour the beans from the basket into the bean pile.
Then he took the stone roller he had just made and started grinding the beans.
They pushed the stone roller directly over the bean pile and rolled it back and forth, flattening the bean stalks in no time.
Then use a large iron fork to lift the bean stalks up, turn them over, roll them back and forth, lift and roll them again, and repeat this process twice.
Then sweep the beans that have fallen to the bottom to one side and dry them separately tomorrow, not under the bean stalks, so they will dry faster.
The remaining bean stalks can be rolled a few more times using the same method tomorrow, and almost all the beans should fall out.
After everything was tidied up, it was time for dinner. Xu Han took out steamed buns, beef soup, stir-fried chicken, tomato beef brisket, and cucumber salad from her space, and the two began to eat.
After three days of intensive harvesting, both of them looked much more haggard.
The autumn harvest will mainly consist of harvesting mountain products, and there are still two or three months until winter arrives! This means that the two of them will need to continue working for another two or three months before they can finally get a proper rest.
Fortunately, there's nothing left to harvest in the fields; all that's left to pick are dried fruits and wild berries. It won't be as tiring as the last two days.
After eating, everyone lay on the rocking chairs, not wanting to move, just lying there quietly without saying a word.
Xu Han, who had never actually experienced manual autumn harvesting, was completely exhausted.
Although Lu Chuan was also very tired from hunting and doing heavy work every day, he had never experienced a real harvest, so his condition was only slightly better than Xu Han's.
