Chapter 20 Refugees

An Shuyi nodded, "Okay, Xiao Wu will come tomorrow. Thank you for your help. We'll head back now so as not to disturb your rest." Then she brought Xiao Wu back with her.

She glanced back at her son, who was laughing happily, and asked, "Are you that happy?"

Xiao Wu nodded, "I'm very happy, thank you, Mom!" Of course, she's happy to be able to learn what she likes.

He knew that his mother's gift for this apprenticeship was quite generous: twenty catties of rice, twenty catties of flour, and five taels of silver.

"No need to thank me. Just study hard in the future. Get some rest early tonight and don't overwork yourself. Your body can't take it."

"Don't worry, Mother, I know."

Seeing that he had gone to rest, An Shuyi looked at her two daughters-in-law who were still making clothes, and went back to the carriage to take six pieces of fabric.

“Zhao, Wu, here is the fabric for your clothes. The gray one is for you men, and the light blue one is for the two children.”

"Thank you, Mother. We will definitely make yours soon."

"Don't stay up too late, you still need to get some rest, otherwise we'll have to travel tomorrow." After saying that, An Shuyi returned to the carriage. Seeing that Xiao Liu and Xiao Qi were already asleep, she took out the yellow fabric and pulled out a dress for Hua Hua.

It's too hot now, so she plans to make a short-sleeved ruqun (a type of traditional Chinese dress) with a low neckline to keep her cool. As for Xiao Liu's, she'll just make a set of clothes and pants, which is simple.

The moon was bright enough to be seen even without a lamp. Seeing that it was almost time, she prepared to go to sleep, but suddenly remembered that she hadn't had time to check the trading system today.

She quickly brought up the screen, clicked on "Where to Sell," and sure enough, five more squares lit up: fabric (this time in cyan), a kitchen knife, cabbage, radish, and potato—all vegetables, though she could add more variety in the future.

If I'm not mistaken, everything that comes out from now on will require her to do it herself; it seems impossible for her to be like Hua Hua.

I should go to sleep; staying up too late is bad for my health.

The next day, before dawn, An Shuyi hurriedly got up to look for Xia Hua. She had felt like she had forgotten something these past few days, and now she finally remembered.

I haven't been eating much all day, so I've been forgetting about going to the toilet. Last night, I had a big meal with Hua Hua, all greasy food, and now my stomach is upset, but she doesn't have any toilet paper.

She had just arrived at the carriage

Xia Hua noticed someone approaching and lifted the carriage curtain. "Shu Shu, what are you doing here so late? Isn't there enough room in the carriage?"

"I have diarrhea, quickly buy me some toilet paper!" An Shuyi stamped her foot anxiously beside the carriage.

"You go first, I'll be right there," Xia Hua said, knowing she was in a hurry.

An Shuyi didn't answer and ran off in a flash. Xia Hua chuckled and got up, following behind her. Only after they entered the woods did she open the screen to buy it for her.

After I finished buying it, I took it to her and asked, "Did you eat too much oily food last night?"

Last night, she took out some food, but she didn't expect that people in ancient times, who had never been exposed to oily food, would get diarrhea from eating so much oily food.

“Maybe,” An Shuyi nodded. “His body is too weak. It seems he needs to take supplements. Otherwise, he’s so weak that he can’t even withstand a single punch from someone.”

She put her clothes back on, took out a bottle of water to wash her hands, and threw the paper into the warehouse.

"Let's go back."

Xia Hua nodded, and the two walked back together. When they got to the horse, some people had already gotten up and started feeding the horses and cattle, preparing to set off. Now the two of them couldn't sleep even if they wanted to.

"Mom, you and Auntie are up so early." The eldest son had just fed the horses and cows when he saw the two of them returning together.

"Hmm!" An Shuyi returned to the carriage with an air of nonchalance, took water from the warehouse, washed herself thoroughly, used skincare products to pamper herself, and then put the water back in the warehouse.

She didn't go to see Xia Hua that day, but stayed in the carriage making clothes, while Xiao Liu and Xiao Qi played with the two children.

Glug,

Hearing the sound, An Shuyi saw Xiao Liu clutching his stomach. "Mom, I'm hungry."

Although Xiaoqi didn't say anything, she was clearly hungry. "Mom will get you some food." She took out some snacks, hiding them under the bundle.

These were all given to her by Huahua. The packaging was gone, and each of them received one. Looking at the thin child, it seemed that she could no longer eat those porridges and grains. Although she couldn't have big meals of meat and fish, at least she could eat a little better.

"Mom, you eat, I'm not hungry!" Xiao Wu didn't take it.

"Mom has more, eat quickly." This child is so sensible. If it were Xiao Liu, he would just grab it and eat it without thinking. He wouldn't be as sensible as Xiao Liu.

After they finished eating, An Shuyi gave them more food. Although her two grandsons were only a little over six months old, she broke them up and fed each of them a little.

Noticing that the carriage was speeding up, An Shuyi opened the curtain and looked outside. It turned out that they had left the county town and entered the main road. People were starting to appear on the road, many of them with their families and carrying large and small bags, but they all looked very thin.

His lips were cracked and bleeding from not drinking water for a long time, with scabs on them. His hair was like a clump of withered grass, and some of his hair was even bald. He was dressed in only a jacket.

Those people saw that they had horses and oxen, and many things on the cart. They clearly wanted to go forward, but seeing that there were many of them, they could only follow from a distance and watch greedily.

An Shuyi got up and walked to the place where the fabric was stored. Using her body as cover, she took out the large knife she had stolen from the warehouse. "Eldest daughter-in-law, go in and watch the children."

"Ah!" Zhao screamed in fright when she saw her mother-in-law holding a knife. Realizing what had happened, she quickly covered her mouth and got into the carriage. "Yes, Mother!"

Xiao Wu put down his medical book and picked up his nephew.

"Third brother, go tell your village chief uncle to let Zhu Liewu go first, and forbid anyone from giving anything to others out of kindness. If anyone comes forward, draw your knife immediately. Also, call your second sister-in-law over." After An Shuyi finished speaking, she sat down in the spot where Zhao Shi had been sitting, and she also drew her knife.

"I know, Mother!" The third son hurriedly went to the front of the group to convey his mother's words to Uncle Village Chief, and then returned. "Mother, the Zhu hunter's family has already driven their oxcart forward."

"Understood, third brother, take the knife and go to your maternal grandfathers' place up ahead. Take good care of them. Wu, get in the carriage." Then she turned back to look at Li Nan behind her and told him to drive the oxcart forward. Behind her carriage, Xia Hua's carriage took over.

An Shuyi turned around and looked at Xia Hua, who was also sitting on the carriage shaft. Xia Hua was holding something wrapped in cloth, and its shape made it clear that it was a baseball bat.

Xia Hua also saw her and gave her a reassuring smile. An Shuyi smiled and turned her head away.

Soon, the refugees, starving and with their eyes turning red, became wary of the people who were about to rob them. Finally, one of the men, unable to contain himself any longer, shouted, "They have food! Take theirs!"
