Chapter 6 The Legacy Left by the Original Owner

This place is located in the far north, and it is plagued by drought or locust plagues year-round. Sometimes there is also the worry of war, and the imperial court will conscript soldiers. The villagers can only get enough to eat, and they cannot live a more prosperous life. The villagers do not leave, not only because they do not want to leave their hometown, but also because they are afraid that they will not be able to survive in other places.

Here, they can only eat their fill, but at least they have a house and land. If they were to move to another place, they would have to start all over again. Thinking of the trading system, the screen appeared before her eyes. Perhaps this was the only way out that God had given her.

Looking at the eggs on the cabinet, she picked one up, clicked on the sales page, and saw an image of an egg: natural and pollution-free eggs, two coins. She hadn't expected these eggs to be so valuable. In that case, two eggs could be exchanged for a pound of rice or flour, plus an extra coin.

She put the eggs back in the basket, wondering what the "pollution-free" label meant. Did it mean that the more harmless something was, the more money it would fetch?

But the family didn't have much food, just some wild vegetables they'd dug up. Hmm, thinking about this, she wondered if she should try using wild vegetables. No sooner said than done, she stood up, left the room, and went into the kitchen, where her second daughter-in-law was still tidying up.

"Mrs. Wu, are you still not done cleaning?"

Wu stood trembling to one side, saying, "Mother, I'll get it ready right away."

Looking at Wu Shi, who was so timid, An Shuyi felt disgusted. Was she a tiger or a leopard? Not to mention now, even when the original owner was around, she was like this. An Shuyi was afraid of the original owner's timid appearance. Just how timid was Wu Shi?

"You can pack up now. Bring some water to my room later." After saying that, she picked up the basket from the corner and went back into the house. Fortunately, it was already dark, so even if her other children saw her, they wouldn't know what she was carrying.

She closed the door, and the screen appeared before her eyes. She took the wild vegetables from the basket in her hand. They were natural and pollution-free shepherd's purse. She put her hand into the basket and clicked "sell."

The vegetables in the basket disappeared, and the screen showed that two catties of shepherd's purse had been sold for four coins! This small half-basket of wild vegetables could actually sell for four coins, which was not bad. It could buy a catty of rice or flour. The balance was no longer 0, but four coins.

Click back, then click on the "Buy" section. I bought a pound of rice, but nothing appeared. My balance dropped to one coin. I clicked on the "Warehouse" section, and sure enough, the pound of rice was stored there.

The warehouse was different from before; it had been replaced with grids. She counted them—there were a hundred. She put the rice in one of them and wondered if she could put other things in there too. Suddenly, the basket in her hand disappeared, and a new basket appeared in the second grid on the screen.

An Shuyi almost shouted out in excitement. If she could put things in it, then it was no different from a space. Moreover, each compartment could hold quite a few things, so she would have a warehouse to store her things and wouldn't have to worry about losing them. Thinking of the things the original owner had hidden, she took out the basket and made the screen disappear.

Once she was sure no one would come into the room, she ran to the corner near the inside of the bed, moved the things there, revealing a hole in the wall. She reached in, took out a bundle, put it aside, and then put the other things back.

She turned around and lay down on the floor, reaching under the bed to pull out a small jar. She carefully took it out, looked around the room, and then carefully opened the bundle. Inside were five gold ingots, each worth ten taels.

Then she took out the contents of the jar. After taking everything out, she counted them: seven silver coins, each worth ten taels, a jade hairpin, a gold hairpin, a jade pendant, more than ten taels of loose silver, and two strings of copper coins. Looking at these things, An Shuyi couldn't help but sigh that the original owner was truly amazing.

These things were all brought back to her by the original owner's husband after he went hunting. The original owner's husband was a skilled hunter and could always catch big animals, so he accumulated so many things over time.

The original owner had quite a few pieces of jewelry in her dowry, but they were stolen and sold by her rebellious sons within a few years, leaving her with nothing. This morning, the original owner even borrowed one tael of silver from Sister Qian next door.

Perhaps she was afraid that her sons would steal the money if they found out there was still silver in the house, so she thought of borrowing a tael of silver from Sister Qian to tide her over.

She never imagined that while Sister Qian went in to get the money, she would be smashed open by that shrew Li and die.

Actually, it's better that the original owner died. Maybe she can meet her husband again in the underworld. They were so loving, they can be husband and wife again in the next life. Otherwise, with the original owner's personality, if Zhang didn't kill her this time, she might be angered to death by her rebellious sons next time.

And those two daughters-in-law... I have to say, the original owner's taste was really terrible. Luckily, her husband was chosen by her father, otherwise, with her naive and innocent nature, she would have been deceived and would have been helping others count the money.

Zhao was full of ulterior motives and scheming. The food that the original owner used to cook for her, except for some she kept for herself, was all taken back to her parents' home. The original owner knew but dared not say anything. Wu was timid and afraid of trouble. She would tremble with fear whenever she saw the original owner, as if the original owner, as her mother-in-law, often bullied her.

Thinking of this, An Shuyi said in her heart, "Original owner, don't worry. Now that I have taken over your body, I will teach your son and daughter well, and I will also treat your two daughters-in-law well."

Feeling her body become lighter, An Shuyi smiled. How naive! Although she had only recently taken over this body, she could feel her heart soften for no reason and guessed that the original owner's soul had not left. She didn't expect that the original owner would believe her after she said that.

However, since she said she would teach and treat him well, she wasn't lying to him. As for how to teach and treat him, that would have to be done according to her wishes.

Find a large piece of cloth and wrap all the gold ingots, silver coins, etc., in it and put them in the warehouse, taking up only one compartment. Leave the two strings of copper coins, and take one string back to Sister Qian tomorrow. One string has a thousand copper coins, one hundred copper coins make one qian, and one thousand copper coins make one liang.

Today, Sister Qian gave her 1,000 coins, Zhang paid her 200 coins, and she spent 300 coins on her injury treatment, leaving her with 500 coins. She put all the coins in her dressing box in the room and went outside.

"Wu, where have you been? I asked you to bring in some water, and you still haven't brought it. What, is it that this old woman can't get anything done by you?"

Upon hearing her voice, the others rushed out.

"Aren't you going to sleep yet? Are you waiting for dinner? Go back to sleep, Ms. Wu!" An Shuyi shouted again.

Did they think she was as easy to bully as the original owner? How naive! If she doesn't act like a proper mother-in-law, how can she keep people in check?

"Oh, Mother, I'm here!" Wu hurriedly brought a bucket of water from the kitchen and then stood shivering in the yard.

"Aren't you going to take me inside? Are you waiting for me to invite you?"

"Yes, Mother, I'll take it in right away!"

After Wu brought the water in, An Shuyi continued to order, "Bring a basin."

"Yes, Mother!"

After she put the basin down, she said, "Go out!"
