Chapter 5 Omens Before Departure

Everyone in the room stared at her in astonishment. The second son asked, "Mother, are you really going to be this cruel? We've made mistakes before, but you've never treated us like this before?"

"Just because of what we took, you're going to expel us from the clan? How are we supposed to stay in the village like this?"

“Second son!” An Shuyi looked at him. “If you still acknowledge me as your mother, then you should do whatever I tell you to do, instead of arguing with me. If you don’t listen, then I will pretend I don’t have a son like you.”

“I have six sons and one daughter. Even without you three brothers, I still have my obedient eldest son, fifth son, sixth son, and seventh son. Are you sure you don’t want to listen to me?”

The three brothers, seeing their mother so earnest, were afraid that what she said might be true.

The fourth child burst into tears of fear. "Mother, I know I was wrong. I'll go fetch water right now. Please don't abandon me. I'll definitely fill the water vat tonight."

After saying that, he picked up the bucket and hurriedly left, afraid that if he stayed any longer, his mother would abandon him.

The third son came over and said, "Mother, I'm digging the ground. I'll definitely finish digging it tonight." Then he went to the backyard.

Seeing that her second son wasn't moving, An Shuyi ignored him and asked, "Eldest son's wife, is the food ready?"

"Mother, it's all set out," Zhao said tremblingly.

She had been married into the Lin family for over two years, and this was the first time she had seen such a formidable mother-in-law. You see, before, her mother-in-law could barely speak, let alone hit anyone.

An Shuyi entered the house, where there was a bowl of vegetable porridge on the table in the middle. It was mostly vegetables with little flour, so she went over and got herself half a bowl.

"From today onwards, you can have as much as you want, and if it's not enough, we'll cook more next time." Apart from those three unfilial sons, everyone else looked pale and thin, and it seemed they had never had enough to eat.

"What, aren't you hungry?" Looking at her motionless children and daughter-in-law.

"I'm hungry, I'll eat now!" Zhao came over and got herself a bowl, then sat down at the table to eat.

Although the eldest son was timid, he knew that his mother was angry and did not dare to persuade her. He could only go and get more rice to eat by himself. The fifth son also ate with his two younger brothers and sisters-in-law. The second son and his wife who was holding the child were left.

"Go eat, don't let the child go hungry, I'll go chop firewood!" Seeing his mother eating, the second son didn't dare to disobey and could only say to his wife beside him.

"Husband, you..." Madam Wu wanted to say more, but her second son had already left, so she had no choice but to take the child to eat.

As An Shuyi ate her meal, she thought about the original owner's memories. This family was really big.

This is Linjia Village. Most of the villagers are surnamed Lin, with only a few people with different surnames, but they are all related by marriage.

The original owner was the daughter of a schoolteacher in the next village. She was skilled in music, chess, calligraphy, painting, and needlework. In the past, apart from cooking, she never had to do any farm work. She was beautiful from a young age, with slender eyebrows, big eyes, a delicate nose, red lips and white teeth. Her smile was particularly charming. Although she was not a beauty that could topple kingdoms, she was still beautiful and dignified, with the appearance of a well-bred lady.

With the love of her parents, she had no worries since childhood and could be described as innocent and carefree. After marriage, her husband also doted on her. After the marriage, she separated from her parents-in-law and only needed to write and do some needlework every day. Sometimes, meals were prepared and then she was called. Her husband could be said to have spoiled her rotten.

The original owner married into the family at the age of fifteen and gave birth to her eldest son, Lin Wenyi, at the age of seventeen. Even after having children, her husband didn't let her work too hard. Whenever he had time, she didn't have to take care of the children. Not long after, she became pregnant again, this time with twins. At the age of nineteen, she gave birth to her second son, Lin Wen'er, and her third son, Lin Wenshan.

After having these three sons, the original owner's husband didn't want her to have any more children, as it would be too harmful to her health. For the next few years, she didn't have any more children until she became pregnant again at the age of twenty-two. She gave birth to twins, the fourth son Lin Wenshi and the fifth son Lin Wenwu. However, the fifth son was born sickly and weak, and it was only through the original owner's careful feeding that he survived.

Although he survived, he was too weak and needed to take medicine frequently. He couldn't do any heavy work, but he was diligent and would often take his two younger siblings out to dig for wild vegetables.

After giving birth to five sons, the original owner did not get pregnant again until she collapsed at home at the age of thirty. When a doctor came to see her, she found out that she was pregnant again. However, she was already thirty years old and her health was not good. Her husband did not want the child, but she insisted on giving birth to the sixth child, Lin Wenliu, and the seventh child, Lin Ruohua.

Thinking about this, An Shuyi had to admit that the original owner was really fertile. Luckily, they were all twins, otherwise, if it was only one child each time, she might have had to give birth to one every year.

The original owner's husband died when she was thirty-two years old. He went hunting in the mountains with the villagers and was hit by a wild boar. He rolled down the hillside and died. Her parents-in-law also passed away a little over a year after her husband's death.

With the money left by the original owner's husband, they were able to survive these past few years. The eldest son was also obedient and often went out to work. Two years ago, he married Zhao Xiaocao from Peach Blossom Village. The second son also married Wu Laidi from the same village.

Six months ago, Zhao Xiaocao gave birth to Lin Yanzhen, the eldest grandson of the Lin family, and Wu Laidi gave birth to Lin Yanan, the second grandson. So when she transmigrated, she not only had to be a mother, a mother-in-law, but also a grandmother, which can be described as a double jump.

Her parents-in-law were not around, and her husband had an older brother who lived in the village. She got along very well with them and never argued with anyone else in the village.

An Shuyi felt that it was because the original owner had a good temper and was tolerant in everything. In the future, when it was her turn, others would give way to her, and she would never give way to others.

After finishing half a bowl of porridge, it was already getting dark. Putting down the bowl, she decided to go outside and take a look. She had been so worried when she went to see Xia Shi that she hadn't noticed the drought problem. She had to go and see how badly it had gotten.

"Eldest son's wife, second son's wife, clean up the dishes after you finish eating. I'm going out for a while." After saying that, she ignored the gazes of the people inside the house and went out into the yard.

No wonder she hadn't noticed earlier; the villagers were still growing vegetables in front of and behind their houses. It was probably this patch of green that prevented her from noticing the drought here.

Her home was at the end of the village, surrounded by only a few other houses. Turning to the other side, she looked out at the rolling mountains. From her vantage point, she saw dry, cracked land with only a few scattered plants. In the distance, she could still see mountain peaks with a touch of green.

If it doesn't rain for a few more days, the villagers here will leave, and her family will too.

With a heavy heart, I headed home. Everything was already packed. My two daughters-in-law were tidying up in the kitchen, while my second son was chopping firewood on the other side.

Back in their room, they sat there thinking about what to do next, where their family would go if it didn't rain, and what they would eat and drink along the way.

If she could, she would like to go to the capital, under the emperor's nose, where no one would starve to death. But after thinking about it again, she gave up the idea. If it doesn't rain in a few more days, she will decide to head south.
