Jiang Yu immediately recalled the scene she saw at the back gate of the educated youth compound and felt that it must be related to those people.
Determined to distance herself from these people, she withdrew her foot that had just been stepped forward. Let them fight, let them fight, it would be best to kill one of them, since none of the three are good people anyway.
Sitting inside, legs crossed, enjoying the fruits of their labor, the door was pushed open. Song E, the village chief's wife, rushed in, her brow beaded with sweat.
At this critical juncture, she didn't care whether she knocked on the door or not.
Jiang Yu stood up and said with a smile:
"Sister-in-law? I just fried some New Year's treats, want some... oh?"
Before she could even utter the word "try," Jiang Yu was pulled out the door by her. Song E hurriedly explained:
“Jiang Yu, Bai Na, an educated youth, and your sister from your maternal family got into a fight in the educated youth compound. Your sister’s head is covered in blood. It’s gotten so big that it’s alarmed the town’s police station, and even the town mayor has come.”
Hearing this, Jiang Yu wasn't surprised at all. It was exactly as she had guessed; there was nothing challenging about it.
"No, sister-in-law. They got into a fight. They should go to the police station if necessary, or call their parents. Why are you looking for me?"
She didn't want to get involved with these people, or they'd blame her later—wouldn't that just be asking for trouble? Besides, judging from the commotion just now, the whole village, young and old, had probably gone to watch the show, and who knows what kind of rumors would spread.
“Your sister said she doesn’t allow the police to call her family. She said there’s an older sister here who wants to see you.”
Song E also felt this was inappropriate. As a daughter-in-law of Shenjiazhuang, she naturally sided with her own people, especially with Lu Yi standing in the middle. No matter how you looked at it, she had to avoid suspicion. Upon hearing this, Jiang Yu flung her hand away, her face full of displeasure.
That damned Jiang Meier, she never gets good things, but she always gets into trouble. And she's even scheming against me behind my back with that scoundrel. Does she really think I'm a pushover?
“Sister-in-law, no matter what, Jiang Meier is an adult. She should take responsibility for her own actions and handle it herself. Besides, you know I'm just her older sister, and I'm married out. If something really bad happens, and she blames me for everything, I won't be able to explain myself.”
Song E had also thought about what Jiang Yu was considering. Her younger sister from her maternal family often came to her sister's house to scheme, and everyone in the village knew about it.
"Do you think I don't want to protect you and insist on dragging you into this mess? That educated youth told the police that you were watching the fight from the sidelines, so what kind of eyewitness are you?"
What?
When Jiang Yu heard Song E's words, she thought there must be something wrong with her ears. It wasn't until Song E repeated herself that she could barely hear her clearly.
These people would stop at nothing to drag her into this mess. Jiang Yu couldn't help but suspect that this was a setup by them, designed to get her to spend money.
Since these people are so shameless, she doesn't need to save face for them.
"Sister-in-law, wait for me a moment, I'll go home and lock the door and come right away."
"Why."
Song E agreed. She hadn't thought things through and forgot that Comrade Jiang Yu had two children to take care of. She felt a little embarrassed.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Jiang Yu went home, retrieved backup copies of the bills, invoices, and IOUs, stuffed the thick stack into her pocket, and strode towards the village chief's house. Today, she'd show these guys whether she was a pushover or not.
Seeing Jiang Yu follow, Song E grabbed her tightly and whispered:
“Jiang Yu, some things, if we see them, we say we see them; if we don’t see them, we say we don’t see them. With your brother He’an there, I guarantee you won’t be wronged.”
Jiang Yu knew that she was completely on her side, and her heart warmed. When the two arrived at the back gate of the compound, sure enough, it was crowded with people.
Jiang Meier lay on the ground, blood flowing from her head, staining the soil beneath her feet. Beside her was a brick, also bearing traces of blood, now somewhat dried.
Bai Na hid behind Cui Jin, trembling. Lu Yi, on the other hand, desperately tried to explain to the police officers that the matter had nothing to do with him and was all a problem between two women.
I heard that Bai Na saw the two of them being intimate and started arguing with Jiang Meier, who called her shameless. Lu Yi stepped in to break up the fight, yelling at Jiang Meier to leave. Bai Na mistakenly thought he was protecting the other woman, and in a moment of panic, she picked up a brick from the ground and hit her.
It wasn't until blood started flowing down her hair that Bai Na realized she had caused trouble. Afraid of taking responsibility, Lu Yi immediately called the police, claiming Jiang Yu was his eyewitness.
At this point, he still thought that the woman would help him clear his name, and that even if it was out of consideration for the fact that he was his 'savior' back then, she wouldn't stand by and watch him die.
Jiang Yu was truly exasperated; everything seemed to involve her, as if she was afraid others wouldn't know she was the most talked-about woman in the village.
"Officer, this is Jiang Yu."
Upon seeing her, Lu Yi felt like he had grasped a lifeline. At this moment, he no longer cared about his dignity in front of others. As long as there was no stain on his record, he would do anything.
He even gave her a meaningful look, but Jiang Yu pretended not to notice.
"Comrade Jiang Yu, hello. We are from the town police station. My name is Cheng Lei, and I am the main person in charge of this case."
The man who spoke was about twenty-five or twenty-six years old, with deep-set eyes and a very dedicated appearance.
"Hello, comrade."
Jiang Yu gave him a brief greeting. Many people turned their attention to them, whispering amongst themselves. This Shen Ying family member was quite poised and confident, not afraid of the police officer at all; truly admirable.
"That's right, Comrade Jiang. Comrade Lu Yi said that you are an eyewitness at the scene. You can not only reconstruct the whole incident, but also testify that this matter has nothing to do with him."
Cheng Lei carefully observed her. The woman looked younger than him, was beautiful, and quite courageous. On the other hand, the crying man, supposedly a sent-down youth, had no sense of responsibility and didn't seem like a good person.
"Officer, I'd like to ask, what are the consequences if I find a false witness?"
Jiang Yu spoke casually, as if it were none of her business. Everyone could see clearly what was going on: the Shen family was completely unaware of the situation.
"Jiang Yu, what do you mean by asking this? Have you forgotten that I rescued you from the water back then? Is this how you treat your savior?"
Lu Yi became more and more agitated as he spoke, wishing he could stand in front of her, dig out her heart, and see just how ruthless this woman really was.
"Get him under control, get him under control."
Cheng Lei called to his men, carefully considering Lu Yi's words. It was obvious that he wanted the woman in front of him to give false testimony, and she even claimed to be his savior. Then he couldn't let her get involved.
"This is equivalent to perjury, which will incur corresponding liability, and in serious cases may even constitute the crime of perjury under criminal law."
Cheng Lei spoke with great seriousness, and the two of them glanced at Lu Yi simultaneously.
