Chapter 3 Mother-Daughter Conflict

As Lin Yinan sorted through the original owner's memories, she listened vigilantly to the sounds around her.

The medicine injected into Li Shulan took effect, and she kept murmuring. Lin Yinan stepped forward and touched her forehead. She didn't have a fever, so it seemed that she should be fine.

Just as she withdrew her hand, she saw Li Shulan slowly wake up, looking at her with teary eyes.

Lin Yinan's voice choked with the word "mother," unable to escape her throat. Finally, she asked dryly, "How are you feeling?"

"I thought I was going to never see you again." Tears streamed down Li Shulan's face.

Lin Yinan held her hand, as if trying to give her boundless strength, and comforted her, "It's okay, you'll get better."

Li Shulan looked around but saw no houses. She asked nervously, "Anan, where are we now?"

“This is outside the city. While you were unconscious, I followed a merchant and left the city through a tunnel dug by their ancestors.”

Upon hearing that they had left the city, Li Shulan struggled to her feet, looking towards Qinglian Academy with a somber expression and tears streaming down her face. "Your father and An'er are probably..."

She leaned sadly against her daughter, choking back tears, her left hand tightly covering her mouth, as if afraid she would burst into sobs at any moment.

Lin Yinan didn't speak, but put his arm around her thin shoulders and looked at Qinglian Academy, which was still shrouded in thick smoke.

On the road outside the academy, a group of people were slowly making their way towards the city gate.

Lin Yinan looked closely and saw more than twenty Hu people walking in front, followed by five horses pulling carts. The first four carts were piled high with grain, and the last cart had seven or eight children tied up on it.

The Hu people were moving very fast, so she quickly pulled Li Shulan into the thicket of thorns.

“There are Hu people on the road.”

Li Shulan leaned out and looked down. As the caravan drew closer, she ignored the Hu people in front of her and focused her eyes on the child in the last car.

"An'er!"

Lin Yinan's gaze also fell on the cart. The children who were tied up were wearing the student uniforms of Qinglian Academy. They were all pale-faced, with lifeless eyes and blank expressions. The original owner's younger brother, Lin Yi'an, was sitting among the children.

The Hu people walked along, talking and laughing loudly, their grain carts leaving deep tracks in the mud.

Lin Yinan narrowed her eyes, and an idea immediately formed in her mind. She turned to Li Shulan and said, "Wait for me here. I'll be right back."

Li Shulan knew her daughter was always bold and understood what she was going to do. She grabbed her arm and said anxiously, "You mustn't go. The Hu people are like jackals and tigers. If you go there, it will be like a sheep entering a wolf's den."

From the moment she saw Lin Yi'an again, Li Shulan tried her best to control her emotions. Even though she desperately wanted her youngest son to live, she was unwilling to trade her daughter's life for his.

In an era that favored sons over daughters, Li Shulan was a woman who grew up under feudal dogma.

She didn't have the idea of sacrificing her daughter for her son; she was a good mother who genuinely loved her. Lin Yinan was very moved, and the word "Mother" came out naturally. "Mother, I'll sneak in through the tunnel; no one will find out."

"No, you're not allowed to go! We're leaving right now to find your older brother in Jiancheng." Li Shulan said sternly, knowing full well what would happen to a girl in the hands of the Hu people.

She has already lost her husband and youngest son; she cannot afford to lose her daughter as well.

Lin Yinan held her in his arms and gently comforted her, "Whether or not I can save An'er, I will definitely be back before dawn."

Li Shulan frowned, wanting to say something more, but seeing her firm gaze, she turned her head away and pursed her lips.

My daughter has always been very decisive; once she's made up her mind, no amount of persuasion from others will change it.

Lin Yinan rested her head on her shoulder and continued, "Mother, you have to believe me!"

"I'm scared..." Before Li Shulan could finish speaking, large tears rolled down her face.

Lin Yinan stopped talking.

After a while, she took out a handkerchief from her bosom and wiped away Li Shulan's tears.

"Don't be afraid, I will be back before dawn no matter what!"

After saying that, she got up and walked to a place a little further away, picked up some dry grass, and used a knife to cut down two thorn bushes as thick as an arm to surround the place where Li Shulan was hiding.

Lin Yinan left the cakes and water pouch, and handed her the dagger in his hand, saying, "Mother, take this for self-defense. No matter who passes by, don't come out."

Li Shulan nodded, "Mother is waiting for you to come back. Go quickly and come back soon. If something is wrong, run away immediately."

The Hu man on the road had already reached the city gate.

Lin Yinan returned to the tunnel, moved the large rock that was blocking the way, jumped into the cave entrance, and then moved the rock back to its original position.

She took out a flashlight from her spatial storage and illuminated the tunnel in the darkness, revealing that it was dug very smoothly.

As she approached the exit, Lin Yinan took off her restrictive dress and put on a set of black clothes that she had stored in her room. She gathered all her hair on top of her head, tied it into a bun, and put on a black N95 mask.

Lin Yinan put her clothes and bundle into her spatial storage, grabbed her bow and arrow, and leaped out of the cave.

The sky was shrouded in smog, and the thick clouds seemed to be pressing down on our heads.

Smoke and fire filled the city, and every breath carried a strong smell of blood and burning.

The massacre continues.

On the streets, there were often Hu people carrying large and small bags, and others pulling along disheveled women. They laughed wildly and arrogantly as they walked towards their encampment, carrying their spoils.

Lin Yinan took a deep breath, leaped onto the roof, lowered his body, and followed the Hu people who had reaped a bountiful harvest with light steps.

Turning into a small alley, Lin Yinan took advantage of the location and saw that there were only about five people in the group, with no one else in front or behind them.

She quickly drew her bow and fired five arrows in quick succession, instantly felling the five barbarians to the ground.

Having fought in the apocalypse for many years, her archery skills were already perfect, and besides, the original owner of this body had practiced martial arts since childhood and was incredibly strong.

The five Hu people were pierced by arrows, and the two captured women were so frightened that they turned and ran away.

Lin Yinan glanced at the two fleeing women, put away his bow and arrows, gripped his dagger, and jumped off the roof.

Fearing the barbarians weren't quite dead, she stabbed them in the neck again and pulled out her specially made arrows.

She waved her hand and put the several sacks of supplies on the ground into her spatial storage.

Seeing the raging fire burning the houses next to him, Lin Yinan took the swords and arrows from the Hu people, his eyes flickered, and he threw them into the fire.

Using the alley as cover and his own advantages, Lin Yinan successively eliminated five more Hu (non-Han) squads, gaining a considerable amount of supplies and food.

The Hu people's entourage that entered the city was stationed inside the government office. She saw it from the rooftop. In the afternoon, the group that transported Lin Yi'an and his group entered the government office.

As darkness fell, Lin Yinan slipped inside silently.

The government office was likely occupied by high-ranking Hu (non-Han) generals, and they were torturing the Han girls they had captured in almost every room.
