Chapter 22 Buying a Mule Cart

The rabbits Jiang Nian brought back were two pairs of male and female rabbits, and the cages were divided accordingly.

Soon a female rabbit gave birth to eight little rabbits, but unfortunately two of them did not survive.

Jiang Yue looked at the four adult rabbits, six little rabbits and two pheasants, and then looked at the leaky door.

Thinking of the greedy expressions of the two aunts who came to her house before, she had reason to suspect that other people in the village were also eyeing these meat.

She had no choice but to go to the village chief's house for help.

"Aunt, I want to take Brother Nian to the city to see a doctor. Maybe his throat can be cured. But we can't take these rabbits and pheasants with us, and we don't have a gate at home..."

The village chief's wife was very straightforward and quick-witted. When she heard that he was going to see a doctor, she felt it was a pity that such a good-looking/fierce person couldn't speak, so she agreed immediately, "I think those cages of yours are good, so I'll just bring them over and put them at my house. It won't be a problem for you to raise them for a few days."

"Okay, thank you, auntie!"

Jiang Yue also agreed with Jiang Shan to go to town the next day. Jiang Shan had a good impression of the strong man Jiang Nian. "No problem! I will pick you up directly at your door tomorrow morning. You don't have to walk down."

The next day, Jiangshan really went around to the foot of the mountain early in the morning, picked them up along with the rabbit and pheasant, and dropped them off at his home before going to the village entrance to wait for other people who were going to the town.

In fact, not many people are willing to spend money to go to the town. Those who run small businesses or do hard labor in the town prefer to walk there at night to save a few cents on the round trip.

Jiang Shan waited for half an hour before four people arrived. Together with Jiang Yue and her husband, the six of them just filled the cart.

Jiang Yue and Jiang Nian had a look of "keep away from strangers" on their faces.

The villagers loved to spread gossip, and as it spread, Jiang Nian became known as a cold and fierce man in everyone's eyes. Add to that the rumors circulating in the village some time ago about a monster in Jiang Yue's family. Although that was dispelled, some fear still lingered in their hearts.

Ignorant and superstitious people are actually the easiest to fool.

Therefore, the "guests" on the mule cart this morning were no longer as lively as usual, but were quiet and did not dare to make a sound.

Jiang Yue was very satisfied with this. Greeting strangers was challenging her patience.

When they arrived in town, Jiang Yue paid two cents and took Jiang Nian to the clinic.

"Young lady, do you have new herbs today?"

The waiter greeted her warmly, "It's all ready. The herbs this young lady brought are all valuable herbs, and the shopkeeper is particularly careful to treat them well."

But she saw Jiang Yue shaking her head, "My husband is injured, I want to ask Doctor Zhu to help take a look."

Doctor Zhu happened to have no patients at the moment, so they went into the inner room, unbuttoned his coat, and saw the two six-inch-long wounds. They were shocked and asked, "How did they get hurt?"

The wound has mostly healed and no longer bleeds or inflames, but the scar has not disappeared and I can still recall the danger it was in.

"I went hunting in the mountains and got scratched by the prey."

Looking at the direction of the scar, Doctor Zhu guessed that it was caused by a sharp animal claw. However, he was very curious about the medicine. Such a wound looked so serious, but the wound healed so quickly. It must be a top-notch medicine.

Jiang Yue shook her head in confusion. She had just applied some herbs in the mountains, but she had no idea what they were.

Doctor Zhu was helpless, but there was nothing he could do. The other party was just a herbal farmer who came along halfway, so it was normal for him not to remember the herbs.

"I'll prescribe two doses of medicine for you. Take them for three days and you'll be almost healed." He looked at Jiang Yue, "Do you want some ointment to remove the scars?"

Jiang Yue lowered her head. Jiang Nian's body wasn't completely covered in scars, but there were several noticeable ones. She gently touched one of them with her finger and shook her head, "No."

It wasn't because she was short of money, but in her opinion, scars were not a flaw. Scars on Jiang Nian's body had a kind of wild beauty.

After getting the medicine, the two went to the carriage and horse shop.

The place is a place for both rentals and trade. Renting a mule cart from the town to the county costs 200 coins for a round trip.

Jiang Yue calculated that they must have made more than one trip, and without a car, it would be inconvenient to just walk.

People who are used to riding in cars in modern times really find it difficult to adapt.

"How much is this mule?"

Jiang Yue took a fancy to a tall, strong mule with shiny fur and four sturdy legs that looked very powerful.

The guy saw that the couple was dressed in shabby clothes and thought that they probably couldn't even afford to rent a car. Unexpectedly, the first thing they said was that they wanted to buy a car.

He quickly put on a smile and said, "My lady, my dear, this mule is three years old and in its prime. I want eight taels of silver."

Jiang Yue paused. After seeing the doctor for Jiang Nian, she only had 7.5 taels of silver left. She needed to buy a mule and a cart.

She said bluntly, "The most I can buy is a mule weighing six taels, plus a carriage."

The man thought for a moment and decided, "No, this mule is young, the minimum it should be worth is 7.5 taels." He pointed to the other two mules in the corner.

"A mule can live for over 30 years. If used for driving, it can be used for about 25 years. The larger reddish-brown one is now 12 years old and is worth at least 6.5 taels of silver. The smaller one is over a year old and may not be as good for driving, but it will be very good after raising it for half a year. It is worth at least 6 taels of silver."

In theory, buying the one-year-old mule would be the most cost-effective, but they couldn't wait for half a year and had to use it as soon as they bought it.

"Seven taels of silver, and a new carriage for the twelve-year-old. I'll pay immediately if you agree."

The waiter smiled, pleased with the customer's promptness. "Okay! I'll have it ready for you in a quarter of an hour!"

The carriages were ready, and we provided a one-stop service, which helped us set them up right away. We also gave them half a bag of bran to feed the mules.

When the cart was handed over, the clerk beamed, saying things like, "This mule cart is very useful, the carriages are all newly made, and the original price is 700 wen." Jiang Yue smiled politely, listened, and then left. It was all sales talk.

This mule must have been trained for many years and is very docile. Even Jiang Yue, who has never driven a car, can make it drive very steadily.

However, it seemed a little afraid of Jiang Nian. When Jiang Nian approached, it snorted from its nostrils and half-raised its front hooves, looking a little uneasy.

Jiang Nian reached out and touched its neck, and the mule put down its hooves and became completely quiet.

Jiang Yue probably understood what Jiang Nian meant: If you don’t listen to me, I will bite your neck off.
