The next morning, Xu Ruantang was awakened by noises outside.
"Smash them all!"
It was noisy outside, with shouts, cries and pleas for help.
Xu's mother's voice was especially shrill, and she started crying again, "Heavens! What kind of mess is this? Who are you people? Don't smash this, hey, don't touch that!"
With a loud crash, Xu Ruantang got up and looked out the window.
Three or five burly men carrying sticks went on a rampage, smashing and breaking things in the Xu family's courtyard. The water vats in the yard were smashed, and water spilled all over the ground.
Kitchen pots and pans were thrown on the floor, broken pieces were everywhere, and even things that couldn't be broken were flattened.
A heavily pregnant girl was dragged out of the house, crying her eyes out.
"You good-for-nothing!"
As the sound rang out, a figure rushed towards the girl, grabbed her collar, and slapped her across the face.
Upon seeing this, Xu's mother hurriedly scrambled to her feet, crying out, "Oh dear, don't hit her! She's pregnant! What if you hurt the baby?"
She lunged toward the girl, but was shoved away by the man with the stick.
At this moment, Xu's father and Xu Sheng finally returned.
