Chapter 45 Happiness in the Second Half of Life

Old Chen is...!!!

After a long pause, Xu Hanli chuckled awkwardly and said, "Yes, yes, we need to discuss it."

Turning to Xu Ruantang, he said, "Sister-in-law, you should think this over carefully, after all, it concerns Old Chen's happiness for the rest of his life!"

He wasn't exaggerating at all, but Xu Ruantang was completely confused.

etc...

What did Xu Hanli call her?

sister in law....

This title is really awkward. She's only twenty years old. Kids call her "sister" or at most "auntie."

Suddenly becoming someone else's sister-in-law was incredibly difficult for Xu Ruantang to adjust to, and she didn't want to say a word.

She stood up. "You guys chat. I have a vegetable garden in my backyard that needs watering. Just call me if you need anything."

What a joke! Xu Hanli looks to be only a few years older than Chen Ji, yet being called "sister-in-law" by him makes me feel like I've aged ten years overnight.

A cunning old man.

Chen Ji's eyes darkened as he watched the fleeing figure in a panic.

"It's getting late, you should head back."

As soon as Xu Ruantang left, Chen Ji immediately asked him to leave.

Cheng Dan felt a mix of bitterness and unease, and was in a daze, but she still didn't want to leave, thinking she could stay a little longer.

Xu Hanli had already stood up when Cheng Dan said, "We're not in a hurry, Chen Ji. We've come all this way, aren't you going to invite us to stay for dinner?"

She wasn't in a hurry, but Xu Hanli was. If they went back after dinner, they would have to stay at the provincial capital's guesthouse.

"Dr. Cheng, driving at night is difficult. Before I came, Chief Cheng instructed me to take you home as soon as possible."

He tried to be as tactful as possible, but he was practically saying outright that he was an informant.

Cheng Dan ignored it, saying, "It's nothing, it's just a meal. I'll explain to my dad."

She and Chen Ji grew up together, childhood sweethearts, and for more than a decade, she always believed that she would marry Chen Ji in the future.

But somehow, things turned out this way.

Looking at the baby in Chen Ji's arms, Cheng Dan felt an overwhelming sadness in her heart.

If Chen Ji hadn't been injured, if it weren't for Xiao Bao, I would be the one standing next to him right now!

Cheng Dan felt as if her heart was being repeatedly pounded, and her eyes filled with tears.

She had fasted for three days and lost a lot of weight. On her way here, she was still fantasizing that Chen Ji would at least say to her, "Why are you so thin?"

She knew Chen Ji was always reserved, and she didn't expect him to say anything more.

But the truth is he didn't say anything, didn't even look at her, and refused her help with his medical check-up.

If it weren't for the excuse that the leader had orders that needed to be conveyed privately, Chen Ji wouldn't have even been alone in a room with her. They were quite a distance apart, and their conversation was so quiet that they couldn't even hear each other.

"Oh, I'm actually a little hungry!" Xu Hanli was afraid that she would really cry, and then it would be more than just embarrassing, since there were still villagers outside!

"I'm going to help my sister-in-law water the vegetables. I haven't had fresh flower cakes in a while, so I'll have to trouble her to make some for me again. I didn't get to eat many last time; those guys snatched them all!"

Xu Hanli was completely acting out a drama, speaking with such righteous indignation!

Before he could even take a step, Chen Ji walked faster, his tone cold: "No need, I can do it myself!"

Xu Hanli: "..."

Something seems off.

So the scene turned into Chen Ji and Xu Hanli watering the vegetable garden, while Xu Ruantang watched from the side holding Xiaobao.

When Cheng Dan arrived, her eyes were red.

Xu Ruantang could tell at a glance that she had been crying! Alas, heroes have always loved beauties; fate is truly unpredictable.

The melon was huge, but unfortunately we couldn't eat it.

The badger was also helpless!

Xu Ruantang knew they were staying for dinner, and anxiously paced around the kitchen.

Aunt Wang was very busy today and didn't have time to cook dinner for them. If there were no guests, she could just make something to eat, since Chen Ji isn't picky about food anyway.

But now that there are guests, she can only make desserts; her cooking skills are really not that great. She picked up a potato, looked at it, and put it down. Then she picked up a cabbage and put it down again, letting out a heavy sigh!

This is difficult, extremely difficult!

"Xiao Xu, why are you sighing like that?"

A voice from outside the kitchen sounded like a lifeline, and Xu Ruantang's eyes lit up.

"Aunt Wang! What brings you here? Aren't you busy at home?"

Finally, with the wedding preparations finished, Aunt Wang felt a huge weight lifted off her shoulders. She was refreshed and beaming from ear to ear: "No rush, no rush. The guests have all left. I'll bring you dinner."

Xu Ruantang looked at the dishes she was carrying and said embarrassedly, "So many?!"

Aunt Wang was serving dishes that were served at a banquet: a whole fish, cold dishes, peanuts, fried snacks, and even a dish made with pork that she didn't recognize.

"These are all whole dishes, not leftovers." Aunt Wang explained first, afraid that she would misunderstand: "I bought too many vegetables and the cook made them all. I saw that Chen Ji had guests again, and since there were many of you, I took a few more dishes."

In this day and age, how could there be leftovers? It's good enough if there's enough to eat!

Aunt Wang specifically asked the cook to reserve it, thinking of sending it over to them.

One reason was that she felt really guilty towards Xiao Xu, and Aunt Wang had been trying to be kind to her. Another reason was that Chen Ji had come over that morning to give a gift, and he had given fifty yuan!

These days, giving two yuan as a gift is already considered very generous!

Aunt Wang refused to accept it, but Chen Ji remained adamant.

Chen Ji didn't hold a grudge about what happened before, and even gave so many gifts, so she had to reciprocate in return.

I made up this reason because I was afraid they wouldn't accept it.

"Thank you, Auntie."

This really solved a huge problem for her! Xu Ruantang thanked Aunt Wang profusely as she saw her off.
