"Why are you back so early today?" Wen Ruan noticed that Song Yan's expression seemed a bit off. After she came in, he didn't take the initiative to speak to Wen Ruan.
Wen Ruan felt a little uneasy, so she asked a question, trying to break the silence.
"What are these things?" Song Yan did not answer Wen Ruan's question, but instead focused his gaze on the stack of documents on the coffee table.
"What was bound to happen has finally happened..." Wen Ruan thought to herself.
Since both sticking out and hiding are equally risky, I might as well just say it directly.
"It's like what you see here. The school has an exchange program abroad and asked me if I wanted to go."
"So what do you think?" Song Yan looked at Wen Ruan with a very serious expression.
Wen Ruan could sense a hint of nervousness in Song Yan's question.
She took a long breath. "I think this is a rare opportunity, so..."
Wen Ruan closed her eyes briefly, as if gathering her courage, before speaking her mind: "So I want to go too!"
Then came a long silence...
"We'll talk about the rest when I get back tonight. I just went back to my study to get some documents I need, and I saw them by chance when I opened the drawer," Song Yan quickly explained, then picked up the documents he needed and stood up to walk towards the door.
He moved very quickly, as if he was afraid that Wen Ruan would call him back at this moment.
After Song Yan left with his things, Wen Ruan sat listlessly on the sofa in the living room, staring blankly at the documents on the coffee table.
She had no mood to do anything else and could only wait anxiously for Song Yan to return that evening.
By eight o'clock in the evening, Song Yan still hadn't returned. It wasn't until the living room clock chimed that Wen Ruan gradually came to her senses. After Song Yan left, Wen Ruan sat quietly on the sofa, maintaining that position.
Wen Ruan sighed, picked up the groceries she had bought at the market that morning, and prepared to go to the kitchen to cook.
"Perhaps this is the last meal I'll cook for him," Wen Ruan thought with a touch of self-mockery, her heart filled with endless sorrow.
Wen Ruan spent the afternoon thinking about many things, including family, love, and her future. She felt like she had never been so clear-headed before.
Whenever Wen Ruan needed to make a major decision, she never hesitated to consider the worst-case scenario. Her mind would constantly race with thoughts: What if Song Yan didn't agree to her going abroad? What if her in-laws also disagreed? And what about her parents...?
Wen Ruan thought that perhaps she had been a little selfish, but life is only once, how could she live for others forever? She had to live for herself at least once...
So no matter what, she wants this spot; she wants to seize the opportunity to go abroad on exchange; and she absolutely must go to the UK!
She knew that if she really chose to go abroad, it might really be the end for them, because it wasn't a simple choice, unlike in her previous life when she could just buy a plane ticket and go.
Putting aside the issue of airfare, Song Yan, as a public official, could not possibly fly abroad, let alone make a transoceanic phone call, as there are only a limited number of telephones across the country that can make such a trip.
If two people want to contact each other, they can only do so by writing a letter, but a letter can take two months or even longer to arrive.
......
Wen Ruan prepared the meal and placed it on the living room table one dish at a time. Song Yan waited for a long time, and the food had long since gone cold.
Just as Wen Ruan picked up her chopsticks, ready to start eating by herself, she heard the sound of a key turning the door. It was Song Yan who had returned!
Wen Ruan looked up when she heard the sound and met Song Yan's gaze.
......
Soon to be starting his new job, Song Yan has been very busy at work lately, handling the handover of his work and learning about the new company and the work location.
He looked exhausted, a strand of hair hanging over his forehead. When he saw Wen Ruan, he seemed to suddenly remember something, and the smile that was about to appear froze. He glanced at the untouched food on the table and asked, "Waiting for me?"
Wen Ruan remained silent and nodded quietly.
"Let's eat first, we'll talk after we finish eating." After saying that, Song Yan took off his coat, picked up the plate, and walked step by step towards the kitchen to heat it up.
Wen Ruan didn't move at all, just watched Song Yan do his own thing.
When the food was heated up and served, Wen Ruan casually picked up a few pieces, ate a few bites, and then couldn't eat anymore, so she put down her chopsticks.
"Won't you eat anything else?" Song Yan asked.
Before Wen Ruan could answer, he continued, "Eat some more, you haven't eaten enough." Then he picked up his chopsticks and put some more food on Wen Ruan's plate.
After the two finished their meal and cleaned up the living room and kitchen, they should have gone to the study to read together as usual. However, looking at Song Yan's consistently subdued mood, Wen Ruan felt as if there was a trapped beast in her heart, constantly trying to break through the door that was always closed.
She just wants an answer now, whether it's good or bad, she'll accept it all, instead of letting it hang in there and making her restless.
So he stood still, his eyes fixed on Song Yan.
Song Yan froze for a moment, turned around to look at her, and remained silent for a long time.
After a long silence, he finally asked, "Do you really have to go?"
"I must go!" Wen Ruan had never been so determined before.
Song Yan sighed: "Have you already told Mom and Dad?"
"Not yet, I'd like to hear your thoughts first," Wen Ruan replied truthfully.
"Does my opinion matter?" Song Yan asked softly, looking at Wen Ruan with a wry smile.
"What if I disagree? Will you listen to me?" Song Yan asked in a low voice.
Wen Ruan's heart pounded wildly. She opened her mouth but didn't say anything, unsure of his meaning.
"If this is what you want, then go for it. I've said before that after we get married, you'll not only be my wife and the mother of my future children, but more importantly, you will be yourself." Song Yan seemed to have made his decision in an instant and expressed his thoughts.
Wen Ruan's eyes showed a hint of surprise. She had thought that there was no hope after hearing Song Yan's words, but suddenly things took a turn for the better.
Wen Ruan was somewhat incredulous, her gaze towards Song Yan filled with questions, until she finally saw his firm and encouraging smile, and then she was convinced.
That night, lying in bed, Wen Ruan asked what Song Yan meant by what he said before revealing the final result.
Song Yan was somewhat helpless, but she still caught his momentary loss of control. "It's nothing, get some rest. We're going back to the compound and the steel factory's residential compound together tomorrow."
