Chapter 29 Jealousy

Everyone turned around when they heard the voice. Wen Ruan immediately recognized the voice. Since the incident that afternoon was still fresh in her mind, she didn't want to talk to him and just kept playing with her hands.

Song Yan's clothes were a little sweaty from cycling in the afternoon, so he took a shower and changed into a white shirt before coming. He planned to go to the educated youth compound to find Wen Ruan and the other person, thinking that it would be very late by the time they finished, so he would pick them up together.

Originally, Song Yan planned to just find a seat on the outside, but who knew that as soon as he entered, he saw Wen Ruan staring at a strange man and smiling brightly at him. Thinking that Ruan Ruan hadn't been very nice to him tonight, he felt even more aggrieved, so he spoke up.

The female educated youths were excited, wondering which village this new educated youth came from. He was tall, with a high nose bridge and handsome features. They discussed him among themselves, guessing his identity.

"Let's begin. Find a seat." Jin Hua, who had just settled down at the front, looked at the newcomer and said gently.

Song Yan turned to look at Jin Hua without saying a word, then turned back to look at Wen Ruan.

I really don't know what's so interesting about this pretty boy. He's been sent to the countryside as an educated youth, and he's so pale. He must not have been working hard. I'll ask my uncle about this educated youth later. Responding to the call to go to the countryside to build up the rural areas means doing hard labor! Song Yan thought to himself.

"Hey? Sister-in-law, my brother is here! He's here to see you! Go and sit with him!" Song Ling, who was standing next to Wen Ruan, said excitedly, shaking her arm.

"Thank you." Wen Ruan silently complained. She didn't really want to go over, but she noticed that everyone around her was staring at the two of them, especially Song Yan, who kept staring in their direction and didn't find a place to sit down.

Wen Ruan was a little annoyed. In order not to affect other people's participation in the event, she had no choice but to walk out and quickly pull Song Yan to sit down in the corner of the last row.

"What are you doing!" Wen Ruan glared at Song Yan and questioned him in a low voice.

Song Yan's lips were tightly closed, the corners of his lips were slightly downturned, his jawline was clenched, and his dark pupils were filled with overwhelming emotions. As if he could no longer hold back, he said, "Why don't you just keep your eyes on him?"

Wen Ruan was somewhat bewildered, not knowing what Song Yan was talking about. "What? It grows on whom?" she asked.

But he stopped talking and kept looking ahead.

Wen Ruan felt a little confused, so she ignored him and looked up at Jin Hua giving a literacy lesson to the villagers.

Seeing this, Song Yan felt a surge of anger rising within him. He clenched his jaw tightly and stared coldly at Jin, the educated youth.

Jin Hua could clearly feel a strong gaze ahead. Looking over, he saw it was Captain Song's nephew. It was said that his father was the deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau.

Thinking that having more friends means having more options, she wanted to show some goodwill to Song Yan. However, when their eyes met, she was frozen by Song Yan's cold gaze and wondered to herself, "I don't know him before, so I shouldn't have offended him, right?"

Jin Hua looked away and continued her lesson.

Finally, today's lessons were almost over, and it was time for the storytelling and talent show segment that everyone was really looking forward to.

The first storyteller today was a young man from the neighboring village who was sent to the countryside. He was quite eloquent and told the story of Goujian's perseverance and hardship. Everyone listened with great interest, except for Wen Ruan, who felt a little bored. She had read this kind of idiom story several times since she was in elementary school!

After this educated youth finished speaking, it was Jin Hua's turn to tell the story of the bloody battle of Xiangjiang.

To be honest, although Wen Ruan had studied this kind of history before, she didn't know many of the details. With Jin Hua's vivid explanation, she couldn't help but listen attentively.

The Battle of Xiangjiang was a battle that determined the life and death of our Central Red Army and the fate of the Long March. It was extremely fierce. In particular, when talking about the revolutionary martyr Chen Shuxiang, who, in order to avoid being captured by the enemy, touched his own intestines and tore them off despite being seriously wounded, I couldn't help but burst into tears.

Song Yan watched from the side, feeling both angry and heartbroken.

The other educated youth in front of her was also telling stories, but she was indifferent. Why did she listen so attentively when Jin Hua came up to tell her story?

But Song Yan still couldn't help but quickly pull out a tissue from his pocket and wipe away the tears on Wen Ruan's face.

She advised, "Ruan Ruan, don't cry. The weather is getting a bit chilly, and the wind will make your face uncomfortable."

Wen Ruan felt a little embarrassed, took the tissue from Song Yan's hand, and wiped herself with her head down.

After the storytelling session, it was time for everyone to share and discuss.

A young woman wearing a yellow floral dress walked up to them, and Wen Ruan noticed that she was one of the group of young women from Shanghai.

She glanced at Jin, the educated youth, who was walking down the aisle, and then said shyly, "Let me play a tune for everyone today." She then took a harmonica from her pocket. Anyone with eyes could see what was going on.

The male educated youth sitting with Jin Hua started to tease her, and Jin Hua smiled gently at her, making the female educated youth even more embarrassed.

Wen Ruan looked at Song Ling in the corner with some concern. It was getting dark, and Wen Ruan couldn't see the expression on her face. She could only see that Song Ling had been looking down for a long time and hadn't looked up. She was no longer as lively as before, and Wen Ruan knew that Song Ling was probably still sad.

But Wen Ruan thought it was a good thing. That Jin, the educated youth, was obviously a famous figure in the educated youth compound. Didn't you see how many educated youths and village girls stared at him as soon as he stepped on stage?

In addition, Song Ling is very innocent and cute. Based on Wen Ruan's observation of Jin Zhiqing's previous behavior, this person is very cunning and definitely not so simple. Song Ling may not be able to handle him.

There is another important practical issue: Jin Hua is an educated youth sent to the countryside, and he will eventually have to return to the city. In this era, how many educated youth abandoned their wives and daughters in order to return to the city? I just hope that Song Ling can extricate herself in time.

By the time the event ended, it was already quite late. Luckily, Song Yan had brought a flashlight with him when he went out, and he kept shining it on Wen Ruan and Song Ling's feet.

The atmosphere among the three was somewhat somber, each preoccupied with their own thoughts, and even Song Ling was no longer as cheerful as she had been when she first arrived.

Wen Ruan felt she should have a serious talk with Song Ling, but she was unsure whether her aunt knew about it and was debating whether to inform her.

The group arrived home quickly.

The Song family's courtyard was very large, with five or six rooms. The eldest aunt had prepared a room for the two of them near the east side long ago.

After washing up, the group returned to their room. Wen Ruan sat at the table in the room, thinking about how to tell Song Ling about these things tomorrow. She didn't notice Song Yan standing in front of her, staring at her intently.

When Wen Ruan finally understood and came to her senses, she was startled by Song Yan in front of her: "What are you doing!"
