Song Yan felt a little apologetic that he had startled Wen Ruan.
He noticed that Wen Ruan had been very cold towards him ever since she met Ye Xiaofan that afternoon.
However, she had already explained it clearly and warned her, so Song Yan didn't understand and felt a little wronged.
Thinking about how Wen Ruan ignored him, yet greeted and smiled at Jin Hua at the educated youth compound that evening, he felt even worse.
He closed his eyes briefly, suppressing the bitterness in his heart, his slightly hoarse voice trembling slightly: "Ruan Ruan, do you hate me?"
Wen Ruan looked at him with surprise: "Why do you say that?"
"You were very cold to me this afternoon and didn't speak to me at all."
"If you don't come back to the city with me tomorrow afternoon, your aunt wants you to stay for a few days, and you just agree."
"You kept staring at that Jin Zhiqing all night, and you even smiled at him. Your eyes are practically glued to him!" Song Yan complained, full of grievances and dissatisfaction.
Wen Ruan was both amused and exasperated; in such a short time, he had imagined so many things.
He explained, "I'm not ignoring you, I'm just speechless about your colleague. We've only been married a short time, and this is already the umpteenth person who's been trying to seduce you and cause me trouble. I'm just getting annoyed."
Wen Ruan herself couldn't quite explain how she felt. She knew it wasn't his fault; he had done a good job at the time. But it was hard to maintain a good mood when faced with someone who coveted her husband.
Song Yan quickly said, "I'm really not familiar with them. Apart from work-related matters, we've never even exchanged a few words."
On this point, Wen Ruan still believed it.
"Then don't get annoyed with me." Song Yan's voice carried a barely perceptible hint of grievance, as if he were accusing her of a crime, and he pleaded with her in a soft voice.
Wen Ruan thought to herself, "I can't take it! This contrast is so cute, everyone! Who can resist this?"
"Yes, I didn't bother you. You're very nice."
"Then don't ignore me!"
Wen Ruan nodded in response: "Okay."
"Then don't smile at that educated youth. What's so attractive about a pretty boy? I'm better looking than him," Song Yan continued, pushing his luck.
Wen Ruan continued to nod and hum, then suddenly realized something was wrong and asked, "Who are you talking about? Who am I smiling at?"
Song Yan looked somewhat annoyed and said with a hint of agitation, "It's that educated youth named Jin Hua. I saw you smiling at him as soon as I arrived at the educated youth compound today! You showed little interest in the stories told by other male educated youths, but you listened intently to his stories!"
Wen Ruan recalled the scene from that evening and suddenly realized what Song Yan meant, so she couldn't help but chuckle.
"I do pay some attention to that Jin Hua." He then paused to think for a moment.
Upon hearing this, Song Yan felt a sudden, indescribable pang of sorrow welling up in his heart. His throat felt as if something was stuck in it, and his eyes, slightly reddening, stared intently at Wen Ruan, waiting for her to continue.
As soon as Wen Ruan saw Song Yan's expression, she knew that he was starting to overthink again, so she didn't care about anything else and quickly interrupted him.
"Song Ling seems to like that educated youth Jin."
"Why do you all like him so much? What's so great about that pretty boy? Really..."
Before Song Yan could finish speaking, Wen Ruan said speechlessly, "At the time, I noticed that Song Ling seemed to have a crush on that educated youth Jin. I was teasing her, and out of curiosity, I glanced at that educated youth. I didn't expect that our eyes would meet. Of course, I had to say hello."
"After that, I wanted to observe that educated youth more closely, and the story he told was indeed quite touching," Wen Ruan explained somewhat helplessly.
"From what I've observed, that educated youth Jin is no ordinary person. I plan to talk to Xiaoling tomorrow and hear her thoughts. I reckon she's probably having unrequited love right now."
After listening, Song Yan realized that he had misunderstood all along.
"If you have any questions in the future, just raise them directly. Don't overthink things."
"Besides, I did have some issues today, and I took my anger out on you a bit," Wen Ruan apologized somewhat sheepishly.
"I also had a problem today. I misunderstood you without even knowing what happened. I was so jealous at the time," Song Yan admitted.
Wen Ruan was taken aback by Song Yan's bluntness and didn't know how to react, so she could only pretend that she was sleepy and needed to rest.
Song Yan stopped her and said, "One last question."
“You told Ye Xiaofan this afternoon that I am your husband, and you said it twice.” Song Yan looked at her expectantly.
Wen Ruan's face flushed slightly: "What's wrong? Isn't that right?"
Song Yan touched his head and grinned foolishly, "Yes, I am your husband, and you are my wife."
......
The next day, after breakfast, Uncle Song and his wife were about to leave for work. They told Song Ling to take Wen Ruan up the mountain today but not to go too deep into the mountains. They also told Song Yan to keep a close eye on the two of them. Only after giving these instructions did they leave with peace of mind.
Wen Ruan and Song Ling had discussed it in the morning and decided to go mushroom picking in the mountains while the sun was still low.
This was a very novel experience for Wen Ruan, and she couldn't help but feel a little excited.
The three of them walked together up the nearby mountain. After about thirty minutes, they finally arrived. Along the way, Song Ling told Wen Ruan the story of the mountain.
They said that during the disaster years ago, this mountain was the one that fed the people in the surrounding villages, and they also told some strange stories about this mountain.
This caused Wen Ruan to always feel a sense of mystery when looking at the mountain.
Song Ling led the way for the two, but perhaps because the three arrived late, the mushrooms had already been devoured by others, and the baskets they had prepared were not even filled with mushrooms.
Looking at the meager harvest, Wen Ruan was somewhat discouraged. She had come full of ambition, thinking she would fill all the baskets she brought, but the reality was far from her expectations.
Song Yan said to the two men, "Follow me, I know where it is." Then he walked ahead and led the way for them.
The place Song Yan wanted to take the two of them was a secret base that he and Song Heng had accidentally discovered while running all over the mountains and fields back then. The two of them used to come here often, and although they hadn't been here for a long time since they grew up, they still remembered the location very well.
Song Yan led the two through several turns, and just when Wen Ruan was exhausted and on the verge of collapse, she finally heard a heavenly voice: "We're here, right here."
Wen Ruan looked up and around and found the place exceptionally beautiful. What surprised her most was that there was a hot spring here!
Wen Ruan was pleasantly surprised.
Perhaps due to its terrain and environment, this place is very remote, but the scenery is undeniably beautiful.
Remembering their mission, Wen Ruan quickly called to Song Ling and they eagerly began searching for mushrooms. Perhaps no one had ever been here before, as the mushrooms were abundant in both variety and quantity, much to their delight. They kept saying they would come back tomorrow to make dried mushrooms for winter consumption.
Feeling they had collected enough, the three prepared to leave.
"Ruan Ruan, before you go down the mountain, don't you want to soak in the hot springs?" Song Yan asked.
