Wen Ruan looked at Song Yan with a puzzled expression.
“I don’t know who she is either,” Song Yan replied quickly.
Wen Ruan was speechless.
"Brother Song Yan, I am Dong Yan. Dong Shuangqun is my father, and I am his second daughter." The woman seemed to have overheard their conversation and felt extremely embarrassed, so she quickly replied.
"Oh, I only know that Teacher Dong's daughter is named Dong Ya. Didn't she go to the countryside with Teacher Dong? Did she change her name? When did she return?" Song Yan asked in confusion.
Dong Yan felt extremely embarrassed. It turned out that her father, Dong Shuangqun, had hidden foreign language books at home, which was discovered by his wife. As a result, his wife and youngest daughter, Dong Yan, quickly severed ties with him and followed her mother to remarry the director of the Revolutionary Committee.
Only the teacher's eldest daughter, Dong Ya, refused to sever ties with her father and resolutely chose to accompany him to the countryside. Song Yan held Dong Ya and her mother in utter contempt.
Song Yan was unsure what Dong Yan meant by suddenly greeting him, and pulled Wen Ruan along, intending to simply walk past.
"Brother Song Yan, I have..."
Before Dong Yan could finish speaking, Song Yan interrupted her coldly, saying, "Please address me by my name, Song Yan, or simply call me Comrade Song."
In fact, Dong Yan was reborn.
In her previous life, she followed her mother to remarry into the Lin family, the director of the Revolutionary Committee. However, the peaceful life did not last long, as the Revolutionary Committee collapsed, and her stepfather was no good either.
He committed countless evil deeds and was wrongly convicted in numerous cases. In order to protect himself, he "sold" Dong Yan to a man in his fifties. Although both of them received their due punishment in the end, it inevitably led to his tragic life. He was poor and destitute his whole life. Even after finally getting married, he had to endure the man's domestic violence every day.
Fortunately, fate gave her another chance, and this time she was determined to seize it.
Her older sister, Dong Ya, was very lucky. After being sent down to the countryside with her father, she didn't suffer much. She had a gullible man named Chen Jianwei who took care of her, and after returning to the city, the government arranged a job for her.
She later married the man before her, Song Yan, who would later hold a high position. Although we don't know how Dong Ya fared afterward, marrying such a man must have made her very happy!
"Tsk tsk tsk, this is Song Yan's childhood sweetheart ex-wife who courted death. I don't know what she was thinking, she couldn't live a good life and had to do something so stupid that she died so young."
"After Wen Ruan elopes with her high school classmate, I want to marry Song Yan before Dong Ya does!" Dong Yan thought, then looked at Wen Ruan with a hint of sympathy.
Wen Ruan felt completely bewildered.
"Is there anything else? We have some things to attend to here, so we'll be leaving now if there's nothing else," Song Yan asked.
"Comrade Song, may I ask if you know the specific addresses of my father and sister who have been sent to the countryside? I would like to contact them and send them some things, is that alright?" Dong Yan asked quickly.
Although Dong Shuangqun was just a poor professor at a university, he would do quite well in the future, so let's try to ease the tension first.
As for Dong Ya, I heard that she got together with a poor rural boy named Chen Jianwei from the countryside. Later, in order to return to the city, she abandoned him. However, after the reform and opening up, the poor boy achieved some success and continued to take care of Dong Ya.
I really don't know what kind of magic that honest-looking older sister has that makes her so good at seducing men. Both Song Yan and Chen Jianwei treat her with great affection. Dong Yan's eyes revealed a hint of jealousy.
“I don’t know either. After the teacher was sent down to the countryside, we lost contact. If you need to, you can ask other people.” Song Yan was surprised by her gaze.
Without giving Dong Yan any chance to reply, Song Yan quickly grabbed Wen Ruan's hand and walked out of the department store.
Dong Yan stomped her foot in frustration and turned to leave.
The shopping bag was almost two large bags full. Song Yan carried the bags onto his bicycle. Luckily, he was strong, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to carry them back.
While riding his bike past the post office, Song Yan asked Wen Ruan to wait at the door. He quickly went inside, asked the staff for paper and pen, wrote something down, affixed a stamp, and mailed it out.
It was almost noon. After leaving the post office, Song Yan took her to a state-run restaurant and ordered braised pork, stir-fried vegetables, and braised fish. After the meal, they packed two more meat dishes to take back to add to the meals for Wen's parents.
Song Yan drove Wen Ruan towards the steel factory's residential compound. Whether it was because the load was too heavy or because of the hot weather, he rode slower and slower as they got closer to the compound. Just as Wen Ruan was about to ask him something, the bicycle suddenly lurched.
Startled, Wen Ruan quickly grabbed Song Yan, but Song Yan suddenly accelerated, making her too scared to let go.
Wen Ruan thought, "Song Yan was probably thinking about something just now."
Song Yan glanced at the slender fingers clutching her hem and gently curled the corners of his lips.
Before long, the two entered the gate of the family compound.
"Ruan Ruan is back. This must be the second son of the Song family. Oh my, you used to be such a little kid, always following him around. I heard from your mother this morning that you two have set a wedding date. Congratulations!" Aunt Hu from across the street said as she was about to go out.
Wen Ruan didn't know how to respond, so she could only nod shyly.
"Yes, sister, I am Song Yan. Please come to our wedding for a celebratory banquet," Song Yan replied.
"Oh, okay, I'll go and share in the joy too," Sister Hu said happily.
After saying their goodbyes, the two arrived home shortly afterward.
Wen's mother and father were already busy in the kitchen, preparing the dishes for dinner.
