Luo Yan walked to the man's side, bent down, reached out her small hand, grabbed the short hair next to the man's temple, and pulled it off sharply, making the man scream like a pig being slaughtered.
Her hair was too short for Luo Shicheng's large hand to reach, but it was just right for Luo Yan's small hand.
Pulling hair from the most vulnerable spots is the most painful, so Luo Yan showed no mercy, pulling out one side bald before moving on to the other.
“I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you. I live with a child, and he was taken to his grandmother’s house early this morning. I don’t know if he’ll come back or not.”
"What's the child's name?" Luo Shicheng pressed.
"I really don't know his name, but I have his home phone number written down here."
Luo Shicheng picked up the man and carried him into the east wing. The man walked to the rosewood desk and opened the drawer...
Bang! Bang! Bang! Three gunshots rang out from the east wing, startling the cicadas in the trees into silence.
Luo Shicheng sensed danger the moment the man opened the drawer. Luo Yan patted Luo Shicheng alertly, and the distance and speed left Luo Shicheng with no choice but to help Luo Yan.
Luo Yan was thrown up by Luo Shicheng and crashed into the tall, thin man like a cannonball.
The tall, thin man was knocked down backwards, and the hand holding the gun instinctively pulled the trigger.
"You still dare to fire randomly?" Luo Yan swung her little fist and punched the tall, thin man in the eyes, once on each side, resulting in perfectly fair black eyes.
The tall, thin man saw stars and felt a sharp pain in his gun-wielding hand—his wrist had been broken by Luo Shicheng's kick.
Luo Shicheng walked over, picked up the gun, and tucked it into his waistband. He then told Luo Yan to go out. Luo Yan stood still, but Luo Shicheng grabbed her by the little bun on her head and dragged her out the door.
Forced to sit facing the courtyard on the high threshold, Luo Yan vowed never to wear her hair in a bun again in her life.
Luo Yan rested her chin on her hands, gazing at the clear blue sky. A flock of white doves flew by, whistling, approaching from afar and then receding again.
"Hello……"
Hearing someone call her, Luo Yan turned her gaze and looked over. It was the young man who had been instructed by Luo Shicheng to follow the tall, thin man earlier.
"dad."
Luo Yan turned around and called to Luo Shicheng, then got up and walked down the steps, blocking the young man from approaching the east wing.
Luo Shicheng came out shortly afterward, carrying a faint smell of blood.
"Third Brother..."
The young man bowed respectfully to Luo Shicheng and handed him the paper with both hands.
Luo Shicheng gestured for the young man to follow him to the hanging flower gate before taking the map and opening it. Inside was a map showing the route the tall, thin man took from leaving the Shen residence to returning.
The young man pointed to the sign that read "teahouse" and said.
"He saw a woman here. That woman should know the teahouse owner. After they parted ways, the woman talked to the owner for a while before leaving."
Luo Shicheng nodded. "You've been to school?"
The handwriting on the paper is neat and the drawings are clean, which shows that the person has some education.
"I've read it. I didn't pass the college entrance exam last year, and I plan to take it again this year."
"Are the learning materials complete?" Luo Shicheng asked.
"It's all there."
"Buy one for me too..."
As he spoke, Luo Shicheng reached into his pocket to take out some money and pulled out a handful of loose change.
How could he forget that he left all the large bills with his godfather at the hospital, and now he only has a dozen or so yuan left in his pocket?
Luo Shicheng was embarrassed. Seeing this, Luo Yan took out ten ten-yuan bills that Xiangzi had given her from her bag and handed them to Luo Shicheng generously.
"I'll use my daughter's money for now, and pay you back double later," Luo Shicheng said, taking the money and handing it to the young man.
The young man was startled and didn't answer.
"Once I get all the documents back, I'll pay whatever it is, I won't be polite with you."
Luo Shicheng returned the money to Luo Yan.
"My name is Zhang Chao, and I live at..."
Luo Shicheng raised his hand to stop Zhang Chao from continuing, and took out paper and pen from Luo Yan's handbag for Zhang Chao.
Zhang Chao took it and wrote down his address and phone number.
"The phone is public; you can leave a message."
With that, Zhang Chao returned the paper and pen to Luo Shicheng.
Luo Shicheng took it, wrote down a phone number in the blank space, tore it off, and gave it to Zhang Chao along with the only five yuan bill he had.
"Go make this call and tell them there's fatty meat here."
Zhang Chao didn't refuse anymore, took the money, and walked through the hanging flower gate.
Luo Shicheng went back to the east wing again, came out five minutes later, closed the door of the east wing, picked up Luo Yan and walked out of the Shen residence.
Standing under the shade of a tree a little further away from the Shen residence, Luo Shicheng and Luo Yan each ate an ice pop while gazing in the direction of the Shen residence.
Less than twenty minutes later, three jeeps sped over, just as the father and daughter finished their second popsicle.
The old lady selling popsicles asked the father and daughter if they wanted more. Luo Yan waved her hand and, with her short legs, strolled along the street with Luo Shicheng.
As Luo Shicheng reached the gate of the compound, he stopped, and painful memories flooded back.
For a long time, Luo Shicheng stood still, while Luo Yan quietly stayed by his side.
With great difficulty, Luo Shicheng pulled himself out of the bloody memories and walked heavily toward the guard post.
The compound has now been renovated, and the guard post is completely different from the old one I remember. Even the guard Luo Shicheng didn't recognize him. After introducing himself, the guard made an internal call.
After hanging up the phone, the guard told Luo Shicheng, "You've got the wrong person. They say they don't know you at all."
Luo Shicheng frowned. "Who said that? My mother, Xia Suya, or my father, Luo Zhaoxing?"
The guards knew Xia Suya and Luo Zhaoxing, and upon hearing this, they dared not delay and called again to confirm.
A short while later, a woman in a floral dress walked over and asked the guard a question with a cold face.
"Who exactly is looking for my house...?"
"It's me."
Luo Shicheng spoke, glancing at the woman; he didn't recognize her.
"Who are you?" the woman asked Luo Shicheng.
Instead of answering, Luo Shicheng asked, "Are you Du Jiqing?"
Du Jiqing was recognized by Luo Shicheng, and a moment of awkwardness flashed across his face.
