Standing on the tree, Luo Yan watched Luo Shicheng carry Hua Li and run wildly out of the woods by the moonlight, before leaping back to the ground like a falling leaf.
The man lying on the ground had eyes swollen like walnuts. Luo Yan walked over and immediately recognized him as An Xiaotong's uncle.
It seems her hunch was right; An Xiaotong's uncle went to the kindergarten to scout it out, just to get revenge on her and her mother.
Dad was in a hurry to take Mom to the hospital, and for a little baby to drag an adult to the police station to report a crime was just asking for trouble.
Luo Yan squatted down and searched through the man's pockets, finding nothing but a set of keys and a few bills.
Not knowing the man's surname, given name, or address, and with no way to interrogate him, Luo Yan pondered with her hands behind her back...
When the man woke up, his eyes were so swollen he couldn't open them. He groped his way to his feet, tilted his head, and listened for a while. The only sounds in the woods were the wind and the chirping of insects.
Although he couldn't see, the man was very familiar with the terrain, and he walked out of the woods and came to the roadside by touching the tree trunks.
Luo Yan followed silently behind him and noticed that the man was standing motionless by the roadside, so she hid behind a tree to observe him secretly.
A short while later, someone passed by, and the man, hearing the noise, immediately called out to the person.
"Hello comrade, I've been robbed. Could you please take me home?"
Wu Hong heard the voice and looked over. She saw a middle-aged man of medium height and stopped warily.
The man quickly explained after hearing the footsteps disappear.
"Don't be afraid. I was injured and can't see, that's why I asked you for help."
The man's tone was kind, showing no trace of his previous viciousness. Luo Yan was even somewhat impressed by his acting skills.
Wu Hong slowly approached the man, and felt relieved when she saw his frighteningly swollen eyes.
"Your eye injury is too serious. Let me take you to the hospital."
The man waved his hand, "It's too late. If I don't go home soon, my family will worry. I need to go home first before going to the hospital."
Wu Hong considered it carefully and said, "Why don't you come back to my house with me? There's a phone at the village committee office. You can call your family to let them know you're safe, and then my brother can take you to the hospital."
Luo Yan recognized Wu Hong at a glance; she was the kindergarten caregiver who had been dismissed for bullying An Xiaotong.
Wu Hong helped the man walk toward the side road, while Luo Yan followed cautiously behind.
Upon entering Fuyuan Village, Wu Hong first took the man to the brigade headquarters before helping him back to her home.
Seeing the man enter Wu Hong's house, Luo Yan immediately turned around and ran home.
Hua Li was only briefly unconscious. Once she woke up, she would be eager to go home, otherwise her secret would be exposed.
Luo Yan sprinted away on her short legs, the effects of the spiritual spring water becoming tangible at that moment. She left a trail of afterimages in her wake, and before anyone could see her clearly, only a gentle breeze swept by.
As she ran into the courtyard, Luo Yan slammed on the brakes when she saw a familiar pair of figures ahead.
Luo Shicheng was sharp-witted and observant, so Luo Yan dared not approach him. She slipped into the shadows by the wall and only ran around to the backyard wall after Luo Shicheng and Hua Li had passed the corner.
Luo Yan looked around to make sure no one was there, then nimbly leaped up, her toes touching the top of the wall as she gracefully flipped and landed easily.
He ran across the vegetable garden, jumped in through the back window of the kitchen, and looked up to find his eyes meeting Xiaoxiu's.
After Xiao Xiu discovered that Luo Yan was not there, he guessed that Luo Yan had gone with Hua Li.
Hearing the door open outside, Xiao Xiu was worried that Luo Yan would be exposed and beaten up, so she paced around anxiously. Hearing a noise from the kitchen, she ran over and just happened to see Luo Yan jumping in like a monkey...
Hua Li and Luo Shicheng entered the room one after the other after opening the door. They didn't see the two little ones, but they could hear the sound of water coming from the kitchen.
As the two walked to the kitchen door, they saw Luo Yan and Xiao Xiu working together to wash grapes. Xiao Xiu washed the grapes clean, while Luo Yan was responsible for placing them on the bamboo mat.
The two children were sweating profusely from their work, which made Hua Li feel sorry for them. She went over and pulled Xiao Xiu and Luo Yan out of the kitchen.
Luo Shicheng glanced at the three bunches of grapes on the bamboo curtain, paused for a moment, then went inside and washed all the grapes clean and hung them to dry.
Hua Li woke up before Luo Shicheng could reach the hospital. She wanted to go home, but Luo Shicheng forcibly took her to the hospital for a check-up and only sent her back after confirming that she was alright.
Touching Luo Yan, who was covered in sweat, Hua Li went to the backyard to light a stove and boil water.
After Luo Shicheng finished washing the grapes and the water was boiled, he brought it in and poured it into the bathtub.
Hua Li washed Luo Yan first, then Luo Shicheng poured water for Xiao Xiu to wash, and then it was Hua Li's turn.
After the whole family had finished showering, it was Luo Shicheng's turn. Luo Shicheng was used to taking cold showers. After showering, he changed into his pajamas and washed all the clothes that the family had taken off, then hung them on the clothesline.
By the time Luo Shicheng finished his work, Luo Yan and Xiao Xiu were already asleep.
Hua Li sat on the sofa waiting for Luo Shicheng. Once Luo Shicheng sat down, Hua Li immediately asked him a question.
"Don't you think An Xiaotong's uncle looks a little familiar?"
Luo Shicheng nodded, "I came to see you just to talk about this..."
Luo Shicheng had a sense of familiarity ever since he met An Xiaotong's uncle, but he couldn't remember where he had seen him before. He planned to go home to talk to Hua Li and spend some time with his daughter, but on the way, he met Mo Xian, who was out for a walk, and he was told that Hua Li had gone out.
Hua Li had no relatives or friends here, so if he came out so late, he must be looking for him. But when he went back to the army and asked the sentry on guard duty, Hua Li had not come. So he knew that something had happened to Hua Li.
The section of road from the compound to the military base was most likely to have an accident, and sure enough, he found Hua Li unconscious in the grove.
As for the man whose eyes were swollen like walnuts, judging from his clothes, height, and build, he was An Xiaotong's uncle.
"You recognize who he is?" Luo Shicheng asked Hua Li.
Hua Li nervously twisted her hands together, her whole body trembling uncontrollably.
"If I'm not mistaken, he is Xu Tai, the one who almost tarnished my innocence."
With Hua Li's prompting, Luo Shicheng's hazy memories gradually became clearer.
How did you recognize him?
The medicine Luo Shicheng had taken was too strong, and he was still feeling dizzy the next morning.
He recalled the madness of the previous night, finding the girl unconscious and rushing to find a doctor to save her, completely ignoring the yellow-toothed man lying dead on the ground.
By the time he found a doctor, both the man with the yellow teeth and the girl had disappeared.
His memory of the man with the yellow teeth remained shrouded in mist; he still couldn't recall it unless Hua Li mentioned it.
Hua Li said, "I asked someone to help me find out about Xu Tai..."
Luo Shicheng interrupted Hua Li, "Who did you ask? Why didn't you tell me?"
Hua Li stood up to leave with a cold face, but Luo Shicheng grabbed her.
"I won't ask anymore, you tell me."
Hua Li's gaze fell on Luo Shicheng's hand that was holding hers, and Luo Shicheng quickly let go.
Hua Li sat down and continued.
"Xu Tai has returned to Jiangcheng, and at the same time he returned, An Xiaotong gained an uncle whom none of us had ever met, so I guess An Xiaotong's uncle is Xu Tai."
There's just one thing: I've seen Xu Tai's photos, but he looks quite different now. Otherwise, I would have recognized him when I met him at kindergarten.
