The bolt on the gate was as thick as a child's arm. Luo Yan gave up, sat down on the ground, and cried loudly with her head tilted back.
Unfortunately, the crying sounded like a cat's meow, and the volume was pitifully low.
She had been hungry for too long; this was the loudest sound Luo Yan could make.
Fortunately, Wu Cuihua, who happened to be washing clothes in the yard next door, heard the crying and climbed up the wall.
Seeing Luo Yan sitting on the ground howling, Wu Cuihua gloated.
"Hey, you little bastard, your mom ran away and abandoned you?"
Hua Li has a cold personality and feels inferior because she was defiled on her wedding night, so she rarely interacts with her neighbors.
Outsiders don't know what Hua Li is thinking. Seeing that she is as beautiful as an angel but ignores everyone, they think she is arrogant and looks down on everyone.
That's just how people are; if you look down on me, I'll definitely look down on you too.
Wu Cuihua, in particular, was dark-skinned, fat, and unattractive, and often rolled her eyes at Hua Li.
When Wu Cuihua discovered that Luo Shicheng particularly disliked her daughter, she would curse Luo Yan behind her back, calling her a little bastard. Even if Hua Li heard this, she would only hide and cry, and no one would stand up for Luo Yan.
Luo Yan remembered this foul-mouthed woman from the book, and also knew that she was actually a kind-hearted person.
People always have two sides; it's not simply black and white. Luo Yan chose to give Wu Cuihua a chance to redeem herself.
"Aunt Wu, please save me and my mother, we are going to die."
Before she could finish speaking, Luo Yan's eyes rolled back and she collapsed to the ground.
Wu Cuihua was terrified and immediately jumped over the wall into the yard to pick up Luo Yan.
Luo Yan, who had been feigning unconsciousness, slowly opened her eyes, her voice weak and childlike.
"Aunt Wu, I want my dad."
As mothers themselves, they couldn't bear to see the child in such a pitiful state, so they carried Luo Yan into the house to find Hua Li.
Seeing that Hua Li was burning up and unconscious, Wu Cuihua closed the door, carried Luo Yan over the wall and went back to her own home.
After placing Luo Yan on the child seat strapped to the front crossbar of the bicycle, Wu Cuihua locked the door and rode straight to the military camp.
The military compound is a five-minute bike ride from the barracks.
Upon arriving at the military camp gate, Wu Cuihua ordered the soldiers on guard to find Luo Shicheng and bring him out.
When Luo Shicheng heard that a woman had come to find him with a little girl, he assumed it was Liu Jingqiu and An Xiaotong and quickly ran out.
"Aunt Wu? Is there something you need?"
Luo Shicheng remembered Wu Cuihua and knew she was his neighbor in the compound, which surprised him.
Wu Cuihua was furious when she saw the energetic Luo Shicheng.
“I said, how can you be such a man? Your wife is sick at home, and your child is so hungry that he can’t even walk, while you’re well-fed and healthy, and you still have the nerve to ask me questions.”
Luo Shicheng was scolded by Wu Cuihua, and his face turned very ugly.
Luo Yan sized up Luo Shicheng. He had a muscular physique that looked slim when dressed but muscular when undressed, with strong features, sharp eyebrows, and bright eyes. He exuded an air of righteousness, but unfortunately, he wasn't very bright.
After Wu Cuihua finished scolding, she shoved Luo Yan into Luo Shicheng's arms.
"Take care of your own child. I have a ton of work to do, so I'm leaving now."
How could he possibly take care of a child while he was in the military camp? Luo Shicheng called Wu Cuihua.
"Sister Wu..."
Afraid of being clung to, Wu Cuihua rode away on her bicycle without looking back.
Luo Shicheng frowned and looked down at the little one in his arms.
Luo Yan looked up, her big eyes reflecting her father's handsome face. The image of Hua Li, who was unconscious from illness, flashed through her mind, and she was filled with anger. She raised her little hand and slapped Luo Shicheng hard across the face.
The little baby's punch didn't hurt at all, but it stunned Luo Shicheng.
Still not satisfied, Luo Yan slapped Luo Shicheng twice more.
Ouch! My hand hurts!
"Wow!..." Fearing that Luo Shicheng would realize that the little girl dared to hit her elders and slap her a few more times, Luo Yan, the villain, burst into tears first, crying loudly and dramatically.
A passing military vehicle screeched to a halt, and a handsome old man with graying temples stepped out.
"Luo Shicheng, what's going on?"
Sun Bailing couldn't bear to hear children cry, so he got out of the car and reached out to take Luo Yan from Luo Shicheng's arms.
Luo Yan thought to herself, her scumbag father is a battalion commander, yet the handsome old man can call her by her first name. Putting aside the fact that he is taking advantage of his seniority, the other party's military rank must be higher than her scumbag father's.
As the saying goes, "a higher-ranking official can crush you," and this is a powerful figure she needs to find a way to get close to.
Luo Yan sobbed, "Daddy's bad, Daddy's bad!"
After all, she was just a three-and-a-half-year-old toddler. If she were to clearly and systematically recount all of Luo Shicheng's crimes, she would undoubtedly be sent to a research institute for biopsy. Therefore, she could only curse her scumbag father in a childish voice.
Sun Bailing frowned upon hearing this.
"Children don't lie, Luo Shicheng, what's going on with you?"
He picked up Luo Yan to check her weight; she was so light, not even as heavy as his one-year-old grandson. Looking at the child's face, her big, bright eyes clearly showed signs of long-term malnutrition.
Sun Bailing's face was unusually grim. "Luo Shicheng, come to my office."
Those familiar with Sun Bailing know that this is a prelude to his outburst.
Luo Shicheng hesitated for a moment, then called out to Sun Bailing.
"Commander Sun, my neighbor said my wife is seriously ill, so I have to go home to see her."
Without saying a word, Sun Bailing picked up the child and got into the car, and Luo Shicheng had no choice but to follow.
In the car, Sun Bailing reprimanded Luo Shicheng with a dark expression.
“I’ve watched you grow up since you were a child, and I never realized you had the potential to abuse children. Once your wife gets better, I’ll go and have a serious talk with your grandfather. If you can make it work, great; if not, then get a divorce. Taking your anger out on the child shows you have no humanity.”
Luo Shicheng rarely goes home, and even when he does, he never pays attention to the mother and daughter. This is the first time he has looked at Luo Yan properly.
The bastard bearing his surname was thin and frail, his large eyes filled with fear and unease, tears welling up in his eyes like a fragile doll.
For some reason, Luo Shicheng felt a sudden pang of pain in his heart when he saw Luo Yan like this.
Just then, the car stopped at the gate of the courtyard, interrupting Luo Shicheng's thoughts.
Ignoring the fleeting pity in his heart, Luo Shicheng got out of the car and knocked on the courtyard gate.
Wu Cuihua, who was washing clothes in the yard, heard this and opened her yard gate, speaking rudely.
"What are you banging on? Your wife has fainted from the fever. Jump over here."
A woman is home alone; if she doesn't lock the door, what if something happens? That's why Wu Cuihua didn't open the door when she took Luo Yan away.
Luo Shicheng jumped over the wall, opened the door, and Sun Bailing carried Luo Yan inside. Luo Shicheng then quickly entered the house.
In the past, Luo Shicheng would usually come home after dark, sleep for a while, and leave before dawn the next day without eating. This was the first time he had entered the house in broad daylight.
Seeing that the house was almost bare, Luo Shicheng was somewhat surprised. Then he thought that Luo Yan's biological father would not possibly not give the mother and daughter any living expenses, and hardened his heart again.
Upon entering the master bedroom, Luo Shicheng immediately saw Hua Li lying on the bed, her cheeks flushed red from the fever.
Luo Shicheng tried calling out to Hua Li a few times, but Hua Li didn't respond. He nudged her, but she still wouldn't wake up.
Sun Bailing, standing outside the door, was so angry that his military cap almost flew off his head.
"Hurry up and help her get dressed and take her to the hospital. Stop yelling and yelling. Who do you think you are? You think yelling will make things better?"
