She woke refreshed, as if everything that morning had been a dream. Only her swollen eyes and aching back from crying reminded her that everything had happened. She and He Chuan had broken up!
Outside, a bustling crowd of voices could be heard: the educated youth were returning from work. Seeing Su Tao already in the dormitory, they thought nothing of it, assuming he'd just gotten off work early. Seeing his listless and exhausted appearance, no one suspected he hadn't gone to work.
The noise in the house made Su Tao even more irritable, so he decided to go out for a walk.
At dusk, the sky was painted with colorful sunset glow, the branches of trees swayed gently in the wind, and wisps of smoke rose from the roofs of every household.
Su Tao was walking leisurely on the village path when a rough and powerful voice called out to her, "Um, Su Taotao?"
"Captain Wang? Why are you here?" Su Tao turned around and found that it was Captain Wang Guodong waving at her. It turned out that she had unknowingly walked to the door of the production team office.
Su Tao walked over quickly and smiled sweetly at the captain, "Captain Wang, what's going on?"
The team leader looked at Su Tao's smile, which was as bright as the morning sun, and so beautiful and charming. He sighed inwardly, "What's the point of such a beautiful girl going to the countryside? I heard she didn't have to go, but she volunteered to go. I wonder what her parents think. If they had a daughter like this, they would definitely keep her at home and pamper her, not wanting her to suffer even a little bit."
Team leader Wang Guodong was wondering whether he should give Su Tao a lighter job. He cursed in his heart, "He Chuan, this old man is so rough and doesn't know how to be gentle with women. Look at what he has done to this delicate girl." Her face was haggard.
With a smile on his face, he said to Su Tao, "Why haven't I seen you come to register for your work points?"
Su Tao was puzzled. He didn't go to work the next afternoon, so he didn't complete his work and got no work points.
Seeing Su Tao silent, the captain thought that Su Tao and He Chuan were having a conflict, so he tried to mediate, "Did He Chuan make you angry? I'll teach him a lesson for you next time. He's just a straightforward guy, but he doesn't have any bad intentions. Look, after the inspection the other day, he specifically asked me to record your work points."
Su Tao was a bit stunned. Did He Chuan finish her work that afternoon? He even went out of his way to help her report her work points? Su Tao's thoughts were all over the place, and she didn't want to wander around anymore. She turned around and returned to the temporary resettlement site for educated youth.
The educated youth had finished their meal. After a tiring day, most of them had returned to the dormitory to rest. A few of them were sitting in the courtyard chatting.
Su Tao greeted everyone and headed to the kitchen to prepare a simple meal. He boiled a pot of water and added the batter, small balls at a time. Once the dough cooked through and formed into small lumps, he added a small lump of melted brown sugar to the pot. A simple dinner was ready.
Su Tao ate his noodles while looking at his tin lunch box, which still contained his braised pork slices. He had originally intended to bring them to He Chuan to try, but before he had the chance to take them out, something like this happened. Su Tao sighed, wondering if He Chuan had finally eaten his pancakes.
Lying in bed at night, Su Tao tossed and turned, unable to sleep, thinking about what happened during the day and what the team leader said. What on earth did He Chuan mean?
The dormitory door creaked open, and He Xinyi tiptoed into the room and climbed onto her bed. Her friend Li Yongmei, who was sitting next to her, rubbed her eyes and asked, "Where have you been? Why are you back so late?"
He Xinyi covered up nervously and said, "I just met an acquaintance outside and chatted for a while without paying attention to the time."
"Oh." Li Yongmei didn't think much about it, turned around and fell asleep again.
Su Tao looked at He Xinyi's shy cheeks and swollen lips, clearly the look of someone who had just been nurtured by love. He scoffed inwardly, thinking the hero and heroine were truly trying too hard, wasting no time in developing their relationship. It was none of her business anyway, and He Xinyi's interruption relieved some of her depression, and she drifted off to sleep.
