Chapter 19 Rumors (1/2)

Chapter 19 Rumors

He Chuan walked in front, and Su Tao followed closely behind. It was too dark and there was no flashlight, so they could only grope their way forward.

He Chuan suddenly stopped and turned back, and Su Tao bumped into He Chuan's hard back without any warning.

Su Tao rubbed the tip of his nose that was hurt by the collision, "What's wrong?", he asked coquettishly.

He Chuan looked towards a corner of the wall behind him. Accustomed to walking at night, his eyesight was sharper than that of an average person. He Chuan caught sight of a corner of a dress peeking out from the wall in the distance. He sneered, but said nothing.

"It's nothing. Don't go out alone at night again." He Chuan instructed solemnly, staring at Su Tao with burning eyes, and did not look away until Su Tao responded.

He Chuan was not a talkative person to begin with, and he didn't speak again along the way.

Su Tao hesitated and said, "Well... that day I was wrong too. I didn't consider your feelings. I apologize to you."

He Chuan paused, then continued walking forward. A deep male voice came from the front: "No, you're fine. This is my own problem. Don't blame yourself."

Upon hearing this, Su Tao rushed forward excitedly and hugged the man passionately, "Really, you really are not angry with me anymore, so we are reconciled now, right?" Su Tao asked happily, not noticing that the body he was hugging was stiff.

He Chuan felt a soft body pressed against his back, and a surge of heat surged through his lower abdomen. He Chuan, holding onto his last shred of sanity, pulled Su Tao away, his voice low and restrained, a husky raspy with effort: "Well, I've never been mad at you." He was mad at himself, mad at his own wishful thinking, mad at himself for not wanting to let go.

He Chuan quickened his pace and walked forward, "Hurry up, we'll be there soon."

Su Tao also quickened his pace to catch up. After the misunderstanding was resolved, Su Tao felt much more relaxed and his steps became lighter.

The man sent Su Tao to the door of the resettlement site for educated youth, then stopped and watched Su Tao walk into the gate before he disappeared silently into the darkness.

Su Tao returned to bed. Hu Xiao turned over and asked with concern: "Why did you come back just now? Go out less at night in the future. It's not peaceful."

Su Tao thought of the man who had given him the same advice before, and smiled knowingly, "Okay, I won't do that next time."

Hu Xiao muttered again, "As soon as you left today, Sun Chuanfang left too, and he hasn't come back yet."

Su Tao looked at the empty bed in the distance, thinking about something. His mind confirmed his guess. Forget it, if she dared to cause any trouble, he would not let her go.

I slept through the night. This week's mission was to gather grass for the pigs. The team only cared about who completed their tasks, regardless of when they arrived or who helped them complete them. Simply delivering on the tasks earned points. If they didn't, they got no points. At the end of the year, there was no food or money.

Su Tao had an easy job cutting grass for the pigs, so he made an appointment with his friends to go to the farm later. He divided the snails he made yesterday into two portions, one for He Chuan and the other he heated up this morning to bring to Tiedan and Erya, having promised to let them taste it once it was ready.

Tiedan and Erya were waiting to play by the roadside early in the morning. When they saw Su Tao coming, they ran to greet her, "Sister Taotao, good morning~"

"Good morning~" Su Tao gave the two little kids a bright smile.

Since meeting Su Tao, the two children have been particularly drawn to his looks, often enjoying the moment of staring blankly at his face. They've also recently begun to pay attention to their appearance, much to the dismay of Tiedan and Erya's parents. Lately, the children have become particularly particular about cleanliness, dressing neatly every day before going out, and no longer coming home covered in mud and slovenly like before. Erya asks her mother to braid her hair into beautiful braids every day, just like her older sister. Erya's mother, however, doesn't know how to do that; she simply sews a few tufts and shoves them out the door.

After cutting grass for the pigs, Su Tao and the two children sat on the lush grass, watching the sunlight filtering through the lush treetops and scattering sparsely on the ground. The interweaving of light and shadow was dazzling.

Su Tao took out the lunch box of snails and opened it. The rich aroma of snails filled the air. The two children drooled with greed and couldn't wait to reach out to take it.

Su Tao handed each of them a thin bamboo stick and taught them to use the bamboo stick to poke the snail meat, pick out the snail meat, and then use their mouths to bite off the back half of the snail meat.
