Chapter 4: Placement (1/2)

Chapter 4 Placement

Entering the room, the once spacious room was now filled with luggage of all sizes. A large earthen kang (a brick bed) stretched across the wall. It was already filled with pillows and bedding, with only a few empty spaces scattered in the corners. Su Tao looked hesitant. She was used to a large room to herself, with a soft, comfortable Simmons mattress. She simply couldn't get used to sharing a large bed with so many people.

"Is this the only bed?" Su Tao asked Hu Xiao in embarrassment.

He Xinyi followed in, sobbing with a hint of grievance. She interrupted Su Tao's question without saying anything, "Taotao, I know you're used to the finery in the city and you're not used to sleeping with all sorts of people." She paused and continued, "Why don't you sleep in my bed? My bed is next to the window, so it's well ventilated and cool. You'll be more comfortable there."

Su Tao frowned, a chill in his eyes. He Xinyi's words were ostensibly out of concern for her friend, but in reality, she was clearly stating Su Tao's dislike of sleeping with other people, and even hinting at his pampered nature. He couldn't tell if He Xinyi's genuine concern was simply superficial, or if...if it was the latter, then she had truly sinister intentions.

Based on what she'd seen and heard so far about He Xinyi, Su Tao didn't think she was a simpleton, otherwise how could she have become the heroine of the original novel? However, the He Xinyi she'd seen was quite different from the heroine described in the book: gentle, virtuous, kind, and generous. Oh, whatever demons and monsters she had, she mustn't mess with her, or she'd let her know why the flowers were so red.

He Xinyi felt Su Tao's cold gaze cast on her, as if he could see through her, and she couldn't help but tremble all over.

"No need. I haven't fully recovered from my illness yet and can't be exposed to the wind." Su Tao replied indifferently.

He Xinyi was about to say something when Li Yongmei, standing beside her, angrily interrupted her on behalf of her friend: "Forget it, Xinyi, she doesn't appreciate your kindness, so why bother thinking about her? You're always bullied because you're too kind!"

"How did I bully her? Do I have to take her bed to not be considered bullying? I just don't want to cause more trouble for everyone." Su Tao's face was full of grievance, her head drooping, her charming eyes already filled with tears. Everyone knows how to act; she's seen a lot of drama. After all, she still had to survive here, and she couldn't afford to make enemies everywhere. So Su Tao decided to attract some sympathy and save the situation.

This color is good, it's all about face. Men love it, and women love it, too. It's just that men's love is purer, while women's love is mixed with envy and hatred.

Regardless, Su Tao's actions have won back a lot of sympathy. Some people just want to make a fuss.

"Yeah, they didn't say anything. If they accept it, tomorrow it will get out that they're taking your place. If they don't accept it, they'll say they're ungrateful. It's like Zhu Bajie looking in the mirror, feeling like he's not a human being on both sides," said a girl with two thick pigtails.

He Xinyi and Li Yongmei were so suffocated by the girl's chatter that their faces turned red and white, and their expressions changed in all sorts of colors, which was very ugly.

"Su Taotao, why don't you sleep with me? There's an empty bed next to mine, in the corner. Since you don't want to sleep by the window, let's sleep together." Hu Xiao stepped in just in time to smooth things over. She was a veteran educated youth, having been here for several years. She was steady and composed, and the other educated youths all trusted her.

Su Tao looked at the bed Hu Xiao pointed to. It was against the wall on the left, and Hu Xiao's bed was on the right. Although the ventilation was poor, it was a good choice because she didn't have to squeeze in with other people. Hu Xiao was also someone she was a little familiar with, so it was the best choice.

"Okay, I'll sleep with Hu Xiao." Su Tao smiled sweetly, and her delicate facial features looked even more dazzling, making the dim room seem a little brighter.

Seeing Su Tao agreed, Hu Xiao enthusiastically chattered, "You must have just arrived and haven't bought any daily necessities yet, right? Just cover yourself with a quilt with me tonight. Tomorrow I'll ask the team leader for leave and take you to town to buy some necessities."
