Chapter 4: Placement (2/2)

"Oh, by the way, your suitcase is there." Su Tao looked in the direction of Hu Xiao's finger. Among the pile of red cloth bags and wicker boxes, her large brown leather suitcase was obviously out of place.

The educated youth had long coveted this beautiful Western-style trunk. In those days, it was a luxury for others, let alone owning one, and some had never even seen one. The trunk had been sitting there for days, with no one coming to pick it up. Some people wanted to open it, but it was locked, and without a key, they had to give up.

Su Tao brought the suitcase to the bedside, and everyone's eyes were fixed on it, eager to see what treasures were inside such a valuable box. Judging from Su Tao's dress, it was clear that she was not from an ordinary family. It was unclear why she came to the countryside. Could she really be responding to the national call for rural reform? Some people couldn't help but think of the previous farce again, maliciously speculating that maybe Su Taotao really came here to chase a man. Who knows?

Su Tao looked at the suitcase in front of him. It was made of brown top-grain cowhide. It looked good and retro, strong and durable. He didn't know where his father Su got it.

Everyone saw Su Tao looking at the suitcase, but he didn't open it at all. Zhang Hongyan came over and asked curiously: "Why don't you open it and take a look? There must be something valuable inside, right?"

"What do you mean?" Su Tao asked in confusion. She didn't know why Zhang Hongyan asked that, but she was certain there was something important inside. Zhang Hongyan was the girl with pigtails who had spoken up for Su Tao earlier. She was from the same countryside as Su Tao. They had met on the street, but they didn't interact much. Su Tao had a good impression of her and was not a picky person.

Zhang Hongyan was a chatterbox, and she started rambling as soon as she opened her mouth. "You don't know, after you fell into the water that day, the Youth League's waterman wanted to save you, but you held on to the suitcase tightly with both hands and refused to let go. The suitcase was too heavy when you fell into the water, and it kept falling. They couldn't pull you out at all. It was only thanks to a villager who passed by and jumped into the water to pull you and the suitcase to shore. Who was that man? Oh, and he looked like He Chuan."

Su Tao smiled bitterly upon hearing this: "It's not that I was reluctant to leave my suitcase. A drowning person subconsciously grabs onto the items around them, like a lifeline."

"Oh, so that's it!" Zhang Hongyan did not question Su Tao's words.

The other female educated youth didn't believe it and just thought that Su Tao didn't want them to know the good stuff in the box.

Su Tao really didn't want to open the box in front of everyone. She remembered that in the original book, Su's father was the manager of a state-owned restaurant, and the Su family was well off. Su's father was afraid that Su Tao would suffer in the countryside, so he stuffed a lot of good things and money into Su Tao before he left.

Don't show money to others; Su Tao understands this principle. Although most people in this generation are simple-minded, there are always those who might be tempted by money, so it's better to be careful.

Su Tao wasn't thinking about the box now. She could wait until there were few people around before opening it. She was focused on the person Zhang Hongyan had just mentioned, her savior, He Chuan!

Is He Chuan the same male second character from the original novel? That's the man who would eventually end my life. It was a delight to read the novel. I really liked the male second character, watching him silently sacrifice for the female lead and repeatedly thwart the female supporting character's attempts to frame him. It was a delight to watch him torment the female supporting character.

But now he was wearing the role of a vicious female supporting role. Thinking of He Chuan's cold and sharp eyes, Su Tao couldn't help but shudder.

This guy is just a bunch of idiots, and sooner or later he will pay for his crimes? He saved her life, and in the end, he took her life away. Woohoo, Su Tao was already crying silently in his heart.
