Chapter 35 The Beginning of Conflict
The black soil was very soft. In less than half a day, Qiao Mo dug out all the excess soil. However, the ridges of the field had not been compacted yet, so water could not be irrigated for the time being. Rome was not built in a day, and paddy fields cannot be cultivated in a day. Seeing that it was getting late, she put down the hoe and went to the bungalow to find a small cart.
I pushed the large pots of grass filled with soil onto the flat land and placed them in a circle along the edge of the flat land. I would find some grass to plant in them when I had the chance to embellish my life. After doing all this, I went to the bathroom of the wooden house to take a quick shower, then went to the bedroom and lay down on the bed to rest.
The next day it rained again, sometimes heavily and sometimes lightly. The team leader announced early that everyone didn't have to go to work that day and told everyone to do what they needed to do. Apart from cooking and eating, Qiao Mo stayed in the house reading books and revising "The Secret of Herbs". Kang Mingyuan and the others originally wanted to go to the mountain to cut mugwort, but Qiao Mo was afraid that they would get wet in the rain and resolutely stopped them. They didn't go, as it was boring to sit there. Seeing Qiao Mo reading at home, they also picked up a book.
At night, after everyone turned off the lights and rested, she entered the wooden bracelet space. She did nothing and dedicated the entire night to the paddy field. After midnight, she finally built up the ridges of the field. The field was considered to be open, and she only had to add water and soak it for a few days before she could plant seeds.
The paddy field was done, and Qiao Mo felt like she had accomplished a great task, and her mood became inexplicably happy. She hummed a little tune as she took a shower and washed her hair, put on her pajamas, and blew her hair dry. She did not leave the space, but went up to the second floor of the wooden house to rest in the bedroom.
When she woke up, the sky was already cloudy. She got up from the bed, washed up, and then left the wooden bracelet space, ready to go to the river to run and practice boxing. However, when she opened the door, it was still drizzling outside. So she stretched her body and practiced two sets of boxing before going into the kitchen.
Since there was no rice at home, she planned to make some buns. She scooped a spoonful of rice flour and a spoonful of cornmeal from the rice jar, added an appropriate amount of yeast, mixed it with warm water, and left it there to ferment while she prepared the filling.
There was no fresh meat at home, and she couldn't take it out from the wooden bracelet space, so she had to take out a piece of bacon, wash it, cut it into slices, put it in clean water and boil it for a few hours, and then cut it into cubes again. She also took some soaked pickled mustard greens, put it in water to wash off the excess salt, and mixed it with the bacon cubes.
After the dough rose, Qiao Mo kneaded it on the chopping board, rolled it into small balls, flattened them, put the fillings on them and wrapped them up. A bun was freshly baked. Because of the weather, she only wrapped twenty buns. She was quick and skillful, and she finished twenty buns quickly. There was no steamer at home, so she had to use a bamboo sieve and a pot to steam the buns.
While steaming buns on one side, porridge is cooked on the other side. It is still a mixture of sweet potato rice and rice. After boiling over high heat, simmer over low heat until the sweet potato and rice are all soft and the porridge becomes thick. Only then is the porridge considered cooked.
When Kang Mingyuan and Han Yimo arrived in the kitchen, they smelled the fragrance of porridge: "Momo, are you making rice so early?"
"Well, it's raining outside, so I can't exercise. Let's make breakfast first." Qiao Mo nodded. "Go wash up first. You can eat the porridge after it cools down."
"Don't worry." Han Yimo pulled his cousin to wash up.
When Qiao Mo saw them go out, she also went to make some side dishes. Since there was nothing else at home, she fried some pickled beans and went to the field to pick some green peppers to make roasted peppers.
"What do you want to eat breakfast?" Kang Mingyuan came in and asked.
"Let's have buns today." Qiao Mo took a bowl and picked up a few buns and put them on the table.
