In the small courtyard, the sky was clear and blue.
The man and his dog enjoyed a delicious and satisfying meal.
At this moment, Lin Momo suddenly realized that she had forgotten to put the cooked millet porridge into the small building to keep it warm when she left the space in the afternoon, and it was probably cold by now.
"Oh dear, how could I forget about the porridge!" In her frustration, she couldn't help but slap herself on the forehead.
Then, he got up and went to the semi-open kitchen in the backyard.
Lifting the lid, the rice porridge, which had long since cooled, had formed a layer of oily skin. Well, let's heat it up.
In the dead of winter, she can't very well drink cold porridge.
Remembering that the porridge was originally made for the chicks, and that it was fine for the chickens to eat it cold, I first served half a bowl to the chicks before lighting the fire to heat the porridge.
Once the porridge was warm, Lin Momo immediately removed the fire, used tongs to take out the red-hot firewood, threw it into an iron bucket next to her, and then put the lid on the bucket.
Once the fire is extinguished, the charcoal will be ready to use.
She let the embers in the stove continue to simmer while she got up, picked up the bowl of porridge, and went to the front yard to feed the chickens.
When I returned, the porridge in the pot was already steaming.
To avoid forgetting about it later when things got busy, Lin Momo scooped the millet porridge into a small stainless steel bucket while it was still hot, and carrying the bucket by its two handles, she carried most of the porridge into the cooked food storage room.
After finishing my work, I went back to wash the pots and pans.
While Lin was busy, the little yellow dog with a limp followed her around tirelessly, its spirits particularly high.
Upon first glance, the air of decadence and despondency it once exuded had completely vanished.
After washing the pots and pans, Lin Momo scooped out most of a basin of hot water from the large vat and carried it to the backyard.
I added some cold water, tested the temperature with my hand and found it a bit hot, so I scooped up another half ladle of cold water and poured it in.
Then, she squatted down, gazed into the puppy's eyes, and said solemnly, "Since you've done such a great service today, I'll take you in. From now on, let's work together happily!"
He laughed as he spoke, and even reached out and shook one of its front hooves, as if shaking hands.
This seemingly pathetic mongrel dog, which only seemed to be a burden, unexpectedly found her an excellent place to settle down.
Actually, even if it hadn't contributed to finding a place to live, Lin Momo was still willing to keep it as a companion.
Taking it in is only right.
At this point, Lin Momo officially took the dog in.
"Alright, you dirty dog, it's time for a bath."
She lifted the puppy with both hands and placed it on a stone slab beside the cement road. The slab had been splashed with water beforehand and was clean.
Lin Momo scooped a ladle of water from the basin and poured it on the puppy. She was on guard and thought it would resist, but to her surprise, it was very obedient and didn't move at all, letting its new owner do as she pleased.
Clearly, the little yellow dog has already recognized her as its master.
Lin Momo felt relieved and became bolder in her actions.
After quickly wetting its fur, I squeezed some homemade soapberry liquid from the pump bottle next to it and smeared it all over its body, making sure to cover every nook and cranny.
Only then did Lin Momo realize that it was a male dog.
Suddenly, I realized I should give it a name. I can't just keep calling it "Doggy" or "Little Yellow."
As she lathered up with soap, she negotiated with the puppy in the bath: "Little Yellow is such a common name, lots of puppies are called that, it's not good! I'll give you a nicer name. How about... how about Benben? Do you like it? Benben."
As he spoke, a malicious smile crept onto his lips.
"Woof!" The little dog, Benben, seemed to understand and immediately barked, as if it quite liked the name.
Lin Momo mischievously called out twice more, "Benben, Benben."
Actually, ignoring the literal meaning, it sounds quite nice, at least much better than those careless names like Da Huang and Xiao Huang.
So, the little yellow dog was forced to accept a new name: Benben.
To help Benben get used to the name as quickly as possible, Lin Momo kept calling him "Benben" repeatedly.
After taking a bath, before Lin Momo could dry its fur, it straightened up and shook itself vigorously, soon drying off half of the water.
Fortunately, Lin Momo sensed something was wrong and quickly hid in the kitchen, otherwise she would have been splashed with water.
I wrapped it in a new bath towel, carried it to the front yard, placed it on the stone table, and began to examine its injured leg.
While giving Benben a bath, Lin Momo noticed that whenever she touched its injured hind leg, its body would tremble and it would unconsciously let out a painful whimper.
The puppy's legs are very thin, and you can easily feel the bones.
Hmm, there doesn't seem to be any sign of a fracture or misalignment. Either it ate some herbs or insects in the wild and the fractured bone is healing.
Currently, all Lin Momo can do is treat its external injuries.
The wound had not been treated and was always dragging on the ground when walking, and it was already showing signs of festering. It was necessary to apply wound medicine powder and bandage it up immediately.
Lin Momo went back into the house and brought out the first-aid kit. She first used scissors to clean the hair around the wound.
Then, use a knife to remove the rotten flesh, then use medical tweezers to hold sterile cotton, dip it in disinfectant to clean the wound, and sprinkle a layer of Yunnan Baiyao on it.
Next, cover the wound with two layers of sterile gauze, then wrap the injured leg with a long roll of gauze, and finally secure the gauze with medical tape.
Throughout the bandaging process, Benben remained curled up inside the white bath towel, seemingly treating it as a warm little nest.
