Xiang Wanwan carried a full bucket of seafood home.
As I walked down the street, many people gathered around to watch.
"Hey, Comrade Xiang, you've gone beachcombing! Wow, so much stuff!"
"These razor clams are really plump. I went to the beach a few days ago and spent two hours picking them up, but I only found a few, not even enough for one stir-fry."
"There are still so many elderly people! That's wonderful!"
Xiang Wanwan continued walking forward, carrying the bucket, and said to everyone with a smile, "Just lucky, just lucky!"
Behind her followed several women, who stared intently at her bucket.
On the island, every household is pretty much the same, with little meat.
If there's a seafood meal like this on the table, that's enough.
Unfortunately, none of them had that luck; every time they went beachcombing, they only had a meager harvest.
So, although they live on an island surrounded by the sea, very few people go beachcombing!
"Comrade Xiang, I think your clams are quite nice. You even have razor clams. Could you sell them to me?"
Several women nearby chimed in, "Yes, yes, I want one too!"
Xiang Wanwan paused, stopped, looked at everyone's expectant eyes, and shook her head.
She was also craving it, and she finished the food in one meal.
There's really no way to sell it to anyone else!
Moreover, when she joined the army, her uncles from the Lu and Huo families prepared a lot of money for her, so she was not short of money at all.
Besides, money is of little use on the island.
"I'm sorry, ladies! This isn't even enough for my own family. Next time, I'll gather more!"
"I'll head back now!"
After saying that, Xiang Wanwan practically ran into the courtyard.
Once inside, she first soaked the clams and razor clams in water to remove the sand, then waited for Lu Jingnian to return and prepare them.
She then took a hoe and turned over the soil that had been turned over yesterday.
When Lu Jingnian returned, he saw Xiang Wanwan turning over the soil in the yard. Her movements were a little clumsy, but she was doing it carefully.
He smiled slightly and stepped inside.
When Xiang Wanwan heard the voice, she looked up and saw him, and smiled sweetly.
"You're back!"
She put down the hoe in her hand, went forward, took Lu Jingnian's hand, and headed straight for the kitchen.
Lu Jingnian looked down and saw that his hand was wrapped in a fair and delicate hand, and his heart skipped a beat.
He felt the warmth emanating from Xiang Wanwan's hand and couldn't help but smile.
This feels pretty good!
Once in the kitchen, Xiang Wanwan let go of his large hand, pointed to the basin, and presented it like a treasure.
"I picked it up this morning, I'm giving you your first taste of meat today."
Lu Jingnian stared blankly at his empty hands for a moment. He looked into the basin, which was full of clams and razor clams.
He was somewhat shocked.
Did she pick all of these up?
When he first came to the island, he did try to pick up these things, but they were hidden deep and it was really hard to find them without experience.
I never expected this woman to have collected so much in just one morning after only a few days here!
He smiled at the woman in front of him; her small face was flushed from the work she had just done, and her smile was incredibly heartwarming.
Lu Jingnian smiled, his voice carrying a doting tone he himself was unaware of.
"Great! You can go out and rest, I'll cook."
Hearing the man praise her, Xiang Wanwan was overjoyed and left.
Her mind is now completely occupied by the small seafood in the basin!
After being vegetarian for so many days, I can finally eat meat again.
Since Xiang Wanwan had nothing better to do, she continued to till the soil in the yard.
She had seen the seeds Lu Jingnian brought back; they were all common plants like potatoes, tomatoes, and chives.
After the soil that was turned over today is dried in the sun, she can plant the seeds tomorrow.
Just as Xiang Wanwan was working hard, Sister Wang came in carrying a plate.
"Wanwan, still working? It's almost time to eat. Here, I stewed some sauerkraut today, let me bring it over to whet your appetite."
