Xiang Wanwan's pork shop opened for business on its first day.
Although the fattest pigs nowadays weigh only a little over 150 pounds, Xiang Wanwan reluctantly took action in order to find out who was behind it.
Wang's wife and Sun's wife put the chopped pork on the shop early in the morning and then hung it up.
The meat is tender and pink, and the pork looks very fresh.
This is the second store to open across from the family compound, attracting many people to come and see.
"These must be pigs from a pig farm, the meat is so fatty!"
"The commander's wife is really good at feeding us. We'll never lack meat again."
"I think this piece of pork belly looks good. I'll buy it today and make braised pork belly. It'll be delicious."
"The spare ribs are still the best; they have a good amount of meat on them."
"I want this piece of pork fat. I'll render enough oil to last for several months. I can also add a little to my dishes to make them more flavorful."
Everyone stared intently at the pork hanging and displayed on the stall, their mouths watering.
Xiang Wanwan placed a large pig's head on the cutting board, and looking at everyone's expectant eyes, slowly began to speak:
"Today is the first day of our pork shop's opening. All customers who make a purchase will receive a 20% discount."
Upon hearing that there would be a discount, everyone rushed to buy.
Aunt Wang quickly maintained order, saying, "Come one by one, everyone has some. There are over 100 jin here, everyone can buy some."
The first person in line was a middle-aged man. "I want a rack of spare ribs. I want to take it home and make soup for my wife."
Xiang Wanwan replied with a smile, "The ribs are 50 cents each. There are five pounds of ribs here, so it's 2.5 yuan in total."
People these days still prefer to eat fatty meat. When they finally get to eat meat, everyone likes to eat something oily.
Therefore, pork ribs are not expensive.
The man paid and left, satisfied, carrying the ribs.
The woman behind her quickly stepped forward, pointed to the fattest piece of meat, and said, "I want this fattest piece, how much?"
Xiang Wanwan took it down and weighed it. It weighed two jin in total. The fattier meat was one yuan per jin, so it cost two yuan in total.
"Okay, two pieces aren't expensive. I'll render half of this fatty piece into lard and stir-fry the other half."
The woman had only taken a couple of steps with the fatty meat in her arms when a man called out to her.
"Is this meat from a pig farm?"
"Yes, the commander's wife said it was just killed this morning, it's very fresh."
The man snatched the meat from her hand and warned her with a stern face, "This meat is poisonous and cannot be eaten."
The woman looked at him like he was a fool, snatched the meat back, and said, "You're crazy! How could meat be poisonous? I think you're just spreading rumors because you can't afford it."
She glared at the man, then picked up the meat and left.
The man sneered, "If you don't believe me, fine. You deserve to die from eating me."
He continued walking toward the pork shop.
While Xiang Wanwan was busy weighing people, Granny Chen suddenly came up from the back of the line.
"Is this meat safe to eat? Won't it give me an upset stomach?"
"Pah, old woman Chen, if you can't afford it, stop spouting dirty jokes. The meat was freshly slaughtered this morning, how could it cause stomach upset!"
Wang's wife was so angry that she went up to argue with her.
She might be the one who poisoned me yesterday, otherwise why would she say something like that?
The pigs slaughtered this morning were from the batch that hadn't been poisoned. Wanwan said that although they had been detoxified and were temporarily fine, for everyone's safety, they should still be observed, so those pigs weren't slaughtered.
Xiang Wanwan was also puzzled. Could it really be Granny Chen?
"Aunt Chen, are you here to buy meat, or to cause trouble?"
Looking at Xiang Wanwan's ambiguous smile, Granny Chen felt a chill run down her spine. "I was just asking."
"It's because I saw you secretly burying a sick pig on the back hill yesterday evening. Who knows if you thought it was a waste to bury it, so you dug it up, slaughtered it, and sold it to everyone."
