Chapter 206 Postponing the Wedding
Just then, there was a gentle knock on the ward door.
A guard peeked in and whispered:
"Director Lu, Expert Gu, Old Master Lu and Aunt Lu have arrived."
As soon as he finished speaking, Old Master Lu Zhenbang and his eldest daughter Lu Yuzhi walked in.
The old man was carrying a thermos, while Lu Yuzhi was carrying two net bags filled with lunchboxes and fruit.
"Father-in-law! Mother-in-law! Dongguo is here too!"
Grandpa Lu spoke in a loud voice, trying his best to dispel the somber atmosphere in the ward.
"Things were chaotic yesterday, and we didn't want to cause any trouble, so we didn't stay long. This morning, I had Yuzhi make some chicken soup and some other light and easy-to-digest dishes. Please eat them while they're hot!"
Lu Yuzhi quickly put the things down, opened the thermos, and the rich aroma of chicken soup immediately wafted out. As she ladled out the soup, she said:
"This chicken was bought by someone from the countryside. It was stewed until very tender and is very nourishing."
"Brother Jianqiang, Sister Fenfang, you've been frightened and bled; you need this."
Looking at the steaming, golden chicken soup, and then at Grandpa Lu's concerned face and Lu Yuzhi's busy figure, tears welled up in Li Fenfang's eyes.
She wasn't feeling wronged; rather, the heavy weight that had been pressing on her heart all night was finally lifted by this simple and warm affection.
"Mr. Lu... Aunt Lu... This, this is too much trouble for you..."
She was rambling incoherently.
"What's the trouble!"
Old Master Lu waved his hand, sat down on the stool by the bed, and his face darkened.
"I can't believe it! In broad daylight, in the capital city, such a heinous crime could happen! It's utterly lawless!"
He looked at Lu Zhanming and Gu Baobao, his tone resolute:
"The higher-ups are already aware and are furious. A special task force has been established and given top-level authority. This time, we will not rest until all the demons and monsters behind this have been uprooted!"
"My dear in-laws, please rest and recover. Once you're better, please settle back into your courtyard house. We have a long future ahead of us!"
These words were both a comforting statement and a declaration of support.
Li Fenfang and Gu Jianqiang felt a warmth in their hearts as they listened, and their last bit of unease vanished.
Lu Zhanming seized the opportunity to say to his grandfather:
"Grandpa, my baby and I have discussed it, and given the current situation, we'll postpone the wedding. We'll hold it again once everything is completely resolved and Grandpa, Grandma, and Mom and Dad are all fully recovered."
Grandpa Lu nodded without hesitation:
"Of course! Right now, safety and recovery are the most important things. The wedding is just a formality. As long as you two live a good life together, that's more important than anything else."
He turned to Lu Zhanming, his tone becoming serious.
"Your top priority right now is to protect the baby, as well as her grandparents and parents! If anything goes wrong, I'll hold you responsible!"
"Yes, Grandpa!"
Lu Zhanming stood at attention and responded.
Grandpa Lu sat for a while longer, carefully inquired about the injuries of Gu Jianqiang and the other two, and told them to rest and recuperate before getting up and saying goodbye with Lu Yuzhi.
Lu Zhanming saw them out.
As they walked down the corridor outside the ward, Old Master Lu stopped and lowered his voice to say to Lu Zhanming:
"Keep an eye on the task force whenever you have time. Your Uncle Zhao Feng is under a lot of pressure, but there's been some progress."
The person responsible for relaying instructions, Target A, is tough on the gut, but not completely inflexible. Also, there's some interesting feedback from the international line; I'll have your Uncle Zhao tell you about it later.
He paused, his eyes sharp:
"Tell the baby not to just be sad and anxious. The idea of the mutagen she came up with is being taken very seriously by the higher-ups, and they have already organized experts to conduct secret research on it. Sometimes, a counterattack on the technological front is more effective than bullets."
Lu Zhanming's heart tightened, and he nodded solemnly:
“I understand, Grandpa. I will tell the baby.”
After seeing his grandfather and aunt off, Lu Zhanming did not immediately return to his ward.
He walked to the window at the top of the stairs, took out a cigarette, thought for a moment, and then put it back.
I just stood there, watching the people coming and going in the courtyard below.
The doctors and nurses in white coats, the patients' family members carrying thermos flasks, and a few seemingly ordinary visitors with unusually vigilant eyes—these were the hidden sentries they had set up.
At the hospital entrance, two elderly women from the neighborhood committee were carrying bamboo baskets and talking to the soldiers on guard. They were then politely led to the reception room next door.
The shadows of eggs and noodles peeked out from the bamboo basket.
This is the vast ocean of people's war—simple, yet warm and solid.
When he returned to Gu Jianqiang's ward, Gu Baobao was talking to Gu Dongguo.
"Brother, are Second Uncle and Second Aunt, and Eldest Brother and the others already on their way?"
"Gu Baobao asked."
She remembered that Gu Dongguo had mentioned before that relatives from his hometown were coming over.
Gu Dongguo nodded:
"Judging by the time, they should arrive in one or two days. My parents, Shengchuan, Zhenbang, and Ansheng will probably come by train together."
Gu Baobao hesitated for a moment.
She had originally hoped for a family reunion and a lively wedding.
But now...
She looked at Lu Zhanming, then at her parents and cousin, and said clearly:
"Brother, once Second Uncle and my brother arrive, let them rest for a couple of days at the hospital or the courtyard house, and then arrange for them to go back."
Gu Dongguo was taken aback:
"Go back? Baby, they've come all this way..."
"I know."
Gu Baobao interrupted him, her tone calm but leaving no room for negotiation.
"The situation is special now. The enemy is in the shadows, using insidious methods, and even dares to cause car accidents."
My second uncle and his family staying in the capital would be too conspicuous, and protecting them would distract us. Their safe return to Qinghetun is better for everyone.
She paused, then lowered her voice:
"Our wedding can't be held for now. Once everything is over and our grandparents and parents are well, we'll go back to our hometown and have a big feast for our fellow villagers."
Looking into his sister's red and swollen yet unusually calm eyes, Gu Dongguo understood her concerns.
Indeed, now is not the time to be excited or lively.
Safety first.
"Okay, I'll do as you say."
Gu Dongguo nodded.
"When they arrive, I'll tell them. Qinghetun is safe and sound now, so it's good to go back."
Lu Zhanming held Gu Baobao's hand and said to Gu Dongguo:
"Brother, don't worry. I will arrange for the most reliable people to escort Second Uncle and the others on their journey to and from the capital to ensure their safety. I will also make the most thorough arrangements for their safety while they are in the capital."
That's how it was settled.
