Chapter 205 Li Fenfang's Concerns
Morning light squeezed through the gaps in the curtains, cutting a pale, bright line across the terrazzo floor of the ward.
Gu Baobao opened her eyes on the cot.
The moment consciousness returned, her heart felt like it was being clenched by an icy hand, and the bloodshed and chaos of the previous night surged up. She abruptly turned her head to look at the hospital bed next to her.
Grandpa and Grandma lay quietly, the monitor emitting a regular, soft ticking sound, and the numbers on the screen remained stable.
The anesthesia hadn't completely worn off; the old man's brow was slightly furrowed, but his breathing was even.
She let out a soft breath, only then realizing that her whole body felt sore and weak, as if it had been disassembled, and her eyes were swollen and sore.
Lu Zhanming woke up almost the instant she opened her eyes. He held her in his arms all night, his arms and half of his body already numb, but he didn't move an inch.
"woke up?"
His voice was a little hoarse as he looked down at her.
Gu Baobao nodded and sat up, supporting herself on her arms.
She didn't rush to get out of bed. Instead, she leaned forward and carefully examined the various data on her grandparents' monitors, then gently lifted a corner of the blanket.
I checked the wound dressing and drainage tube; there was no abnormal exudate, and the color of the drainage fluid was normal.
After completing these basic medical checks, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"I need to go wash my face."
Her voice was hoarse as she threw back the covers and got out of bed.
Lu Zhanming also stood up, his neck and shoulders making a slight clicking sound.
He stretched his stiff joints, the bloodshot eyes were more pronounced than the night before, and dark stubble had appeared on his chin.
Gu Baobao saw this and felt a pang of heartache.
The ward has a private bathroom.
She went inside and turned on the tap.
The icy water splashed on her face, making her shiver and dispelling the last bit of sleepiness.
She applied cool water to her red and swollen eyes and then rinsed her mouth carefully.
The person in the mirror was pale, with heavy shadows under their eyes, but their gaze had regained its clarity and determination.
When she came out, Lu Zhanming was already standing by the window, cautiously observing the situation downstairs through the gap in the curtains.
Hearing the noise, he turned around.
"husband,"
Gu Baobao walked up to him, looked up at his tired but still sharp eyes.
"Go lie down on the cot for a while and rest. I'll go check on Mom, Dad, and my brother. Grandpa and Grandma are in stable condition now, they're being monitored, so they'll be fine for a while."
Lu Zhanming shook his head without even thinking, forcing a slight smile:
"It's okay, I'm not tired. In the past, during field training, it was common to go three days and three nights without sleep. This is nothing. Don't worry, I know what I'm doing."
Gu Baobao knew she couldn't go against his wishes.
This man has a strong sense of responsibility; how could he possibly let his guard down and rest at this moment?
She didn't try to persuade him further, but with a slight thought, she took out a cup of warm spiritual spring water from her spatial storage and brought it to his lips:
"Then drink this."
Lu Zhanming took the cup; it was warm to the touch.
He was already familiar with the wonders of this sacred spring water, and he tilted his head back and gulped it down in a few mouthfuls.
A warm current immediately spread from my stomach to my limbs, dispelling the fatigue and chill from staying up all night.
The redness in my eyes faded considerably at a visible rate, and I felt much more refreshed.
"Much better."
He handed the cup back to her, his gaze softening.
"Thank you, wife."
Gu Baobao took a few sips herself, then put the cup back into her storage space.
She then took out a military water bottle filled with spring water.
"I'll go take a look."
She said.
Lu Zhanming nodded, accompanied her to the ward door, and whispered instructions to the two plainclothes guards on duty outside:
"No one other than us and medical staff is allowed to enter this ward. Medical staff must have their identities strictly verified before entering and leaving, and must be accompanied by someone at all times. Understand?"
"Yes, sir!"
The two guards stood at attention.
Lu Zhanming added:
"The same goes for the ward next door."
After making the arrangements, he and Gu Baobao walked together to the ward of Gu Jianqiang and his wife.
Gu Jianqiang and Li Fenfang's ward was a double room. Gu Dongguo was also in the room, with his head wrapped in gauze and his arm in a sling, but he looked to be in good spirits.
When Gu Baobao pushed open the door, the family was having breakfast.
Simple white porridge, steamed buns, and pickled vegetables were placed on the bedside table.
"Baby! Zhanming!"
Li Fenfang saw them first and quickly put down her chopsticks.
Have you eaten yet?
Gu Baobao shook her head.
Gu Dongguo smiled:
"I knew you wouldn't have time for that. I bought extra, so sit down and eat with us."
He pointed to the oil paper package on the stool next to him, which contained a few steamed buns and eggs.
How are Grandpa and Grandma doing?
"The surgery was successful. The anesthesia hasn't completely worn off yet, but the vital signs are stable."
As Gu Baobao spoke, she walked over and, instead of sitting down immediately, took the hands of her parents and cousin and took their pulses one by one.
Although the pulse was weak, it was still relatively stable, and no serious internal injuries were found.
She felt somewhat relieved, and at the same time secretly instructed the system Defu to activate the scanning function.
[Ding! Scan initiated.]
[Target: Gu Jianqiang. Examination results: Fractures of the third and fourth ribs on the left side, soft tissue contusion, mild post-concussion syndrome (dizziness, nausea). Vital signs are stable.]
[Target: Li Fenfang. Examination results: Fracture of the right radius (immobilized in plaster cast), multiple soft tissue contusions, and neurogenic gastrointestinal dysfunction due to excessive fright. Vital signs are stable.]
[Target: Gu Dongguo. Examination results: Scalp laceration (sutured), fracture of the left ulna (immobilized in cast), mild concussion. Vital signs are stable.]
De Fu's clear report echoed in my mind.
Gu Baobao was completely relieved.
These are all injuries that require time to heal, but fortunately, they are not life-threatening and have not left any irreversible sequelae.
She then sat down on the edge of the bed, and Lu Zhanming moved a stool and sat down next to her.
"Baby, your eyes are so swollen, you didn't sleep all night, did you?"
Looking at her daughter's pale face, Li Fenfang felt heartbroken and tears streamed down her face.
"Mom and Dad are fine, just minor injuries, they'll be fine after some rest. Don't overwork yourself..."
As she spoke, her voice choked up, and she didn't dare to say the rest.
She was afraid.
There's a fear that a prominent family like the Lu family might feel it's unlucky that their in-laws suffered such a misfortune so soon after arriving in the capital, and might harbor resentment towards the baby.
What if... what if this matter affects the young couple's relationship?
Gu Baobao noticed her mother's worry, grasped her uninjured right hand, and squeezed it firmly:
"Mom, don't overthink it. Don't worry. Your daughter is doing very well now. If she has to live at the mercy of her in-laws after marriage, then it's better not to get married at all."
Her tone was calm, yet carried an undeniable confidence:
“The Lu family is a reasonable and kind family. Zhanming lost his parents when he was young, so you will be his parents from now on. We are all one family, so let’s not be formal.”
Gu Jianqiang leaned against the headboard, looking at his daughter's calm and determined demeanor, feeling both proud and heartbroken, and nodded repeatedly:
"Yes, yes, baby is right. We are a family, and we're doing well."
Lu Zhanming immediately replied, his tone solemn:
"Dad, Mom, don't worry about getting better. With me here, I won't suffer any injustice. Grandpa and Aunt from the Lu family are both reasonable and will only feel sorry for me; they would never have any other thoughts."
"There's no rush for the wedding. Let's have a grand ceremony once Grandpa, Grandma, and you've all recovered."
