Chapter 42 Did something happen to grandma?
Wen Jun looked up at the brand new high school textbook in Wen Sining's hand.
“I bought it in town.”
Wen Sining didn't believe it. "Where can you find brand new textbooks for sale these days? Even if you really sell them, they'll probably fetch quite a bit of money, right?"
"I don't have much money. Now that the college entrance exam has been cancelled, many high school textbooks are no longer needed. I bought these books from old teachers."
Wen Sining was surprised, "Brother, do you have this idea?"
"Well, I saved his grandson once, so we became connected because of that."
Originally, the old teacher had suggested to Wen Yun that he could send his sister to his school. Maybe after studying there for a while, she would make some progress.
But Wen Jun knew his sister's situation well and didn't want to trouble others, so he finally declined.
It was when Wen Sining mentioned buying textbooks that Wen Jun remembered the old teacher.
The schools in the town are integrated with primary, junior high and high schools. Since the cancellation of the college entrance examination, there are fewer and fewer students in junior high and high schools in the town. Most of the children help their families with farm work and earn work points after finishing primary school.
I was busy until I became an adult, got married and had children, and my life went by in this routine.
The school depends entirely on the primary school, which has few students and has a hard time.
Wen Yun also knew this, and he insisted on spending money to buy books. The old teacher refused to do so no matter what. Finally, before leaving, Wen Yun specially put the money into the old teacher's textbooks.
That brand new set of high school textbooks was a cherished thought of by the old teacher. When he learned that Wen Jun wanted them, he gave them to her without hesitation.
He also said with a smile that he was very pleased that there were still people willing to learn at this stage, and this was exactly what he wanted to see, so that this set of high school textbooks could play its role.
After hearing this, Wen Sining was shocked.
In this tense era, veteran teachers always insist on teaching and educating people, firmly believing that knowledge can change destiny.
If possible, Wen Sining really wanted to tell the old teacher in person.
If you persist a little longer, just one more year, the college entrance examination will be resumed.
By then, the old teacher’s dream and grandma’s dream will come true!
…
Lu Jinkun discovered that his grandmother had lost her appetite again recently.
Grandma didn't eat a single bite of the meat he brought back.
At first, he thought the food he cooked was not tasty, so Lu Jinkun simply went to the state-owned restaurant in town and ordered a few dishes.
The result was the same, grandma didn't eat a single bite.
She drank white porridge for every meal and was full after eating a few chopsticks of vegetables.
Lu Jinkun was at a loss and asked Old Lady Lu, "Grandma, if you don't eat more, how can you have the energy to wait for my dad to come back?"
Old Lady Lu's cloudy eyes met Lu Jinkun's face, and she asked him with a puzzled look: "Grandma? Xuchuan, are you confused? I am your mother. Your father has been gone for several years. Have you forgotten?"
Lu Jinkun was slightly stunned, still unable to believe that his grandmother had fallen ill again.
Since that incident, grandma hasn't been sick for a long time, so long that he thought she was normal and would never get sick again.
But the current situation seemed to have dealt a heavy blow to Lu Jinkun.
"Xuchuan, where is Xiaoying? It's so late, why isn't Xiaoying home? Did you make Xiaoying angry again?"
Old Mrs. Lu asked several questions in a row, and every one of them mentioned that woman.
Lu Jinkun's eyes suddenly darkened. Grandma was clamoring to find that woman, so where could he get her?
He kept his composure, put his hands on Mrs. Lu's shoulders, and coaxed her gently.
"I'll go get her. Please wait at home obediently, okay?"
Old Mrs. Lu quieted down instantly. She pushed Lu Jinkun with an anxious tone.
"Xuchuan, go quickly! Xiaoying is so good to you, go and get her back!"
"It's getting dark, I have to cook for Xiaoying. Oh, yes! Xiaoying loves braised pork the most. I'll make it right away!"
Old Mrs. Lu talked to herself and walked towards the kitchen step by step.
Until Old Mrs. Lu's emotions gradually stabilized, Lu Jinkun did not dare to delay and strode out of the house.
He blended into the night, walking on the dark and silent path. After a few minutes, he finally saw a dim light coming from the house.
The sound of girls laughing and talking could be heard from outside the yard.
"Sister Xu, look, my brother is really partial. The textbooks he brought you are all brand new. Look at mine, I don't even know where the cover is."
Xu Zhiyi couldn't help laughing after hearing this. She naturally heard the joking tone in Wen Sining's words.
"How about I switch with you?" Xu Zhiyi couldn't help but tease her.
Wen Sining immediately became unhappy, "Okay, Sister Xu, are you on my brother's side now?"
"Alas, I am a poor, lonely little creature, worthy only of crying alone in a dark corner." Once Wen Si Ning pretends, the whole world becomes her stage.
Wen Yun, who was in the room, couldn't help but come out to interrupt her.
"Nianxian, where did you learn all this nonsense? Go take a shower!"
Wen Si Ning was discouraged. She curled her lips and responded in a low voice.
Xu Zhiyi patted her head and said, "Go take a shower. Your brother has prepared the bath water for you. I'll go in and talk to your brother for a while."
Wen Sining waved towards Xu Zhiyi and said, "Sister Xu, go quickly. I'll go close the gate."
After Xu Zhiyi entered the house, Wen Sining skipped to the door with a cheerful step. She reached out to close the door when suddenly a black figure appeared in front of her, scaring her so much that she wanted to scream.
Fortunately, the man covered her mouth in time and said in a low voice: "It's me"
Wen Sining opened her eyes wide, and in the dim light, she could see clearly the handsome face that was magnified in front of her.
"Why don't you make any sound when you walk? You scared me to death!" Wen Sining patted his chest, his heart still in shock.
Lu Jinkun didn't say anything. Most of his face was hidden in the night, making it impossible to see his expression.
Wen Sining suddenly realized that something was wrong. Why would Lu Jinkun come to her house so late?
What's more, the communication between him and his brother that day was not very pleasant.
If something important hadn't happened, he wouldn't be here at all.
Wen Sining thought of something and asked him quickly, "Did something happen to grandma?"
Lu Jinkun looked at her solemnly, still without saying a word, but his tightly pursed thin lips and tense jawline were enough to prove that Wen Sining's guess was correct.
Wen Sining didn't hesitate and said to him directly: "Let's go, I'll go with you."
Lu Jinkun looked at her with some surprise, nodded lightly, and turned to lead the way.
Wen Sining didn't dare tell her brother. She carefully closed the door and followed Lu Jinkun.
The man took big steps, but he was considerate of her speed and would stop after a few steps to wait for Wen Sining to catch up.
There were no street lights in rural areas in the 1970s, and people could only rely on the moonlight to barely see the road ahead.
Wen Sining didn't ask too many questions along the way. Just from Lu Jinkun's reaction, she could guess that his grandmother was probably sick again.
