Chapter 128 Watercress

When Zhang Guihua returned, she saw chestnut shells all over the ground. She asked with a smile, "Didn't you go out to play? How come you brought back so many chestnuts?"

Qin Tiantian picked out the biggest chestnut, peeled it, and handed it to her mother, saying, "Third brother found it. There are still a lot of chestnuts on the tree. I'll take my other two brothers with me later."

Zhang Guihua nodded and said, "That's how it should be. Only what we bring home is truly ours."

“I’ve been free these past few days, so I’ve been wandering around the mountains. I even heard someone say today that Chunyan found a large patch of yams on the mountain. They’re good, very nourishing.”

Qin Tiantian nodded.

She really enjoys going up the mountain; staying at home, although the work isn't heavy, is still quite annoying.

In the past, when I was bored, I could chat with Sister Hanxiu, but ever since Aunt Chunyan suggested that her third brother become a live-in son-in-law.

The already strained relationship between the two families was broken.

She and Sister Hanxiu should also keep their distance.

Otherwise, it wouldn't be good for her third brother and Hanxiu's reputation.

It's better to wander around the mountains, pick some wild vegetables and fruits, and sometimes you might even get lucky and find wild eggs or bird nests.

"What are you saying? You're so happy, let me share in your joy too."

Everyone looked up and saw Zhang Hongxia from next door strolling in.

"Auntie's here, please have a seat." Qin Tiantian placed a small stool in front of her.

Zhang Hongxia plopped down and saw chestnut shells scattered all over the ground and chestnuts in the basin. She smiled and asked, "You went to pick chestnuts today? You've picked quite a lot."

Without waiting for a reply, he grabbed a handful and started crunching away.

Zhang Guihua felt sorry for Qin Tiantian and gave her a wink, telling her to take the food back quickly so it wouldn't be eaten up.

Qin Tiantian saw that the basin was full and said, "I'll go empty the basin."

Zhang Hongxia pursed her lips.

How stingy!

She ate three chestnuts in a row before saying with a worried look, "You don't know how awful my two daughters-in-law are. They completely ignore me. When they make something delicious, they hide it and eat it all by themselves. They are so unfilial."

Zhang Lanhua is no good, and neither is Lin Ting. They secretly told their two granddaughters to stay away from her so they wouldn't be led astray.

She raised Zhao Wu to be so outstanding, how could he possibly go astray by following her?

He only learned bad habits from his mother, Lin Ting.

What could Zhang Guihua say? She simply gave a perfunctory "hmm."

They've even taken an axe and started chopping at their daughter-in-law; they've practically torn her skin off.

How can we expect people to be filial now?

We shouldn't have let it go when it first happened.

The two families lived so close, yet she never heard Zhao Wen apologize to Zhao Wu.

Zhang Hongxia watched as her old friend looked at her with agreement and kept pouring out her grievances, saying that she was getting old and had to live alone.

You have to do everything yourself.

Even his own son is unfilial.

He would make excuses to chop wood and carry water.

Zhang Lanhua, who was washing clothes in the neighboring yard, rolled her eyes when she heard the familiar wail.

Serves you right!

It's all because she's been exploiting her, her young wife.

She moved the basin further inside, strained her ears to listen, and watched to see what the old man was saying bad things about her.

Zhang Hongxia kept talking, and even after she finished eating the chestnuts in her hand, she still reached out for more.

Zhang Guihua declined, saying, "Raw chestnuts don't taste good. I'll get you some when we cook chestnuts later."

“I don’t mind.” Zhang Hongxia waved her hand. “Right now, as long as I can eat, I’m fine with it. I don’t care about anything else.”

Zhang Guihua rolled her eyes at her and said, "If you want to eat them, let your son go up the mountain to pick them. You need to keep a close eye on him now, so that when you get older, you won't be able to manage him anymore."

Zhang Hongxia shrugged and said, "I want to manage him, but he won't listen. What can I do? I'll ask the team leader to talk to him for me another day."

Zhang Guihua smiled enigmatically and said, "You really know how to boss people around."

“He’s the captain, after all. When we ordinary folks run into trouble, who else can we turn to but him?” Zhang Hongxia said matter-of-factly.

Yunling found it annoying; it was all about these trivial matters all day long.

She looked at Zhang Hongxia, whose slanted eyes made her look somewhat like those old ladies from later generations who took advantage of their age to expect others to give up their seats.

She nudged Qin Chuan.

Qin Chuan stood up and said, "Let's go for a walk."

"I'll go too," Qin Tiantian said, growing impatient.

Quickly sweep the yard clean and move the prepared chestnuts to the kitchen.

Then the three of them went out for a stroll.

The weather is nice today, and quite a few people are out strolling around instead of going to work.

Yunling also saw the educated youth carrying baskets walking into the mountains.

Qin Tiantian also saw it and said, "They're busy all day long."

Yunling nodded.

Going to the countryside is really hard work.

Earning a living is not easy.

The group wandered around and eventually arrived at the riverbank.

Autumn has arrived, and Qin Tiantian is a little hesitant to put her hand in the water.

Yunling said, "You're not afraid of catching a cold anymore."

Qin Tiantian smiled and said, "It's just for a little while, how could I catch a cold? My health isn't that bad."

Suddenly, her eyes lit up and she said, "There are water celery vines there. Let's pick some and take them back. We can make a cold dish for lunch."

After picking for a while, Yunling noticed that everyone had a large handful in their hands and asked, "Isn't that enough?"

Qin Tiantian glanced at them, took the water celery from the two of them, tied it with a vine, and said, "Pick a little more, it's better to pick some than not."

All right!

The group continued picking, and after they had finished picking the ones nearby, Yunling asked Qin Chuan to hold her back so she could reach the ones in front.

Otherwise, if you fall into the river, you'll get terribly cold.

"Can this be eaten?" Fang Yuyan asked.

Yunling tugged at the cloth, turned around, and saw a row of educated youth standing behind her.
