Chapter 2 The Neighbors

After cutting the vegetables, Yunling sat on a stool at the kitchen door, pinched off the yellowed leaves of the chives, washed them clean by the well in the center of the yard, and brought them to the kitchen.

Qin Tiantian took it from her and asked, "Third Sister-in-law, do you know how to start a fire?"

Yunling: "Yes."

She lost both her parents at a young age and grew up in the countryside with her grandmother, where they lived on an earthen stove.

Her grandmother passed away when she went to university, and she never went back.

"Then I'll cook, can you help me light the fire? Don't touch the innermost pot, there's porridge cooking in that pot, and the small pot on the edge is for cooking." Qin Tiantian squatted down next to Yunling again and taught her carefully.

Yunling listened attentively and quickly mastered how to start a fire.

Lunch was prepared quickly. The main dish was cornmeal porridge, and the side dishes included stir-fried eggs with chives, stir-fried cabbage, and pickled vegetables.

It was served in a large bowl, with a generous portion, but it had no oil at all; it tasted like it had been boiled.

Just as the dishes were placed on the dining table in the main room, voices could be heard outside the door.

The woman who entered was a middle-aged woman. She looked fierce, but when she saw Yunling, her expression changed instantly, and she asked with a smile:

"Third son's wife, how are you today? Are you still dizzy?"

"Much better," Yunling said with a smile.

Qin Tiantian added from the side, "My third sister-in-law even helped me cook today."

Zhang Guihua nodded, looked her up and down, and thought, "She's too thin. She can't even do farm work. I heard from the old man that she's fainted several times. What will she do when she has children?"

Then the others returned one after another, and Yunling greeted them one by one. Everyone was quite enthusiastic.

Yunling took a closer look at Qin Chuan. His skin was slightly dark, he was very tall, about 1.8 meters, and had a good figure with a broad back and narrow waist. He had strong features, sword-like eyebrows and bright eyes, and was full of energy.

It just looks a bit cold.

Qin Chuan, who was washing his hands, felt a gaze on him and looked back.

Their eyes met.

Yunling smiled.

Qin Chuan frowned. He was crying and sobbing yesterday, but today he seemed like a completely different person.

The family sat down to eat, filling the table. Seeing that Yunling wasn't eating much, Zhang Guihua moved the plate of stir-fried eggs with chives in front of Yunling and said, "Eat more."

Liu Yun pouted. Her mother-in-law was too biased. It was only the first day. She usually liked the third son, and now she liked his wife as well.

This is so unfair.

She gave birth to a precious child for the Qin family.

Is it okay for the third son's wife to have such a thin and frail figure?

Her eyes were fixed on the tender yellow egg. She swallowed hard, hesitated for a moment, and seeing that her mother-in-law didn't seem to care, she picked up a large piece with her chopsticks, ate a bite herself, and gave the rest to the two children. The children's eyes lit up, and they immediately stuffed the rest into their mouths.

Zhang Guihua glared at her, thinking, "She's a reincarnated starving ghost."

She quickly called out to Yunling, "Third brother's wife, eat quickly, or that starving ghost will eat it all up."

Qin Yan tugged at her mother's clothes, and Wang Xiuxiu gently shook her head.

Qin Yan rolled her eyes and looked at Zhang Guihua pitifully, saying, "Grandma, I want to eat more."

"Eat, eat, all you know is eating! You're like a reincarnated starving ghost! Haven't we given you eggs before?" Zhang Guihua's expression changed instantly, and she said fiercely.

The new bride ate with everyone on her first day, and she didn't even try to make a good impression. It was so embarrassing.

Yunling moved the plate of stir-fried chives and eggs to the center and said with a smile, "Everyone is eating, I can't finish it all by myself."

Seeing that Yun Ling looked like she could be blown away by a gust of wind, Zhang Guihua picked up a large piece of food for her and said, "Eat more."

Liu Yun tried to pick up another piece, but then she saw her mother-in-law's murderous gaze.

She got scared and picked up a piece of chives with her chopsticks.

At least it tastes like eggs.

The others also took a few pieces of egg, and the plate was quickly empty. Liu Yun took a dark-colored steamed bun and smeared it inside.

After dinner, Zhang Guihua took Yunling out for a walk, saying, "Let me introduce you to the people who live around here, so you can get a general idea."

Seeing Qin Chuan about to return to his room, he called out, "Third brother, you come too."

Qin Chuan silently followed.

It was lunchtime, and there weren't many people outside. Zhang Guihua pointed to the house next door and said, "This is your Aunt Zhao's house. Her husband died. She has two sons. The elder son is named Zhao Wu, who is a driver for the county's transportation team. He's often away from home, but he earns thirty yuan a month. His wife is named Lin Ting, and like you, she was a sent-down youth. They have twin daughters who are quite well-behaved. The younger son is named Zhao Wen, and his wife is named Zhang Lanhua. They have twin sons who are very mischievous."

Yunling nodded.

Zhang Guihua smiled and said, "It's okay if you don't remember. We live nearby and will be interacting with each other in the future. You'll remember eventually."

The three of them walked over to a house next door. There was a jujube tree in front of the house, with green jujubes hanging on it. Zhang Guihua saw Yunling staring at the jujube tree and thought she wanted to eat them, so she asked Qin Chuan to pick two and hand them to Yunling.

"The dates aren't ripe yet, they're a bit astringent and not very tasty, but you can still try them."

Yunling took a bite; it was both astringent and sour, but she forced herself to swallow it.

Seeing Yunling's face scrunched up, Zhang Guihua laughed: "If it weren't astringent, the village children would have picked it long ago."

Yunling asked, "Don't these people care?"

Zhang Guihua shook her head: "This family's surname is Zhou. You can call her Aunt Zhou. Her husband fell down the mountain while chopping firewood ten years ago. Her son died last year while saving people during the flood. However, her daughter-in-law, Song Miao, is a good person. She stayed to take care of the two children. She is very kind and good to the children in the village. Now she teaches at the village primary school."
