Chapter 2 The Neighbors

"I was so grateful to Brother Qin Chuan for saving me back then," Yun Ling said after thinking for a moment.

Upon hearing this, Zhang Guihua was delighted: "Of course, anyone would save someone who has fallen into the water."

What could Qin Chuan say but nod?

Looking at Yunling's obedient appearance and then at her tall and strong son, Zhang Guihua thought the two of them looked quite well-matched.

Actually, she didn't think much of this female educated youth at first. She got sick on her first day and fainted several times after starting work. Her health was too poor.

But the old women in the countryside were too gossipy. Even though her son was doing a good deed, they insisted that he was taking advantage of her. Rumors flew everywhere, forcing the two to get married.

Seeing that the two of them weren't very affectionate, Zhang Guihua advised, "Since you're both married, you should make it work. Divorce isn't common in our village."

Qin Chuan glanced at Yun Ling and said, "I understand."

Zhao Guihua looked at Yunling, and Yunling nodded in agreement.

Zhang Guihua pointed to a house with green bricks and tiles and said, "This is the Hu family. There is an old lady in the family, her son is named Hu Ying, her daughter-in-law is named Zhao Chunyan, her daughter is named Hu Hanxiu, who is the same age as the third son, and her youngest son is named Hu Xiaoshan, who was adopted from elsewhere. You should know this yourself and not go around telling others."

Seeing Yunling's surprised look, Zhang Guihua explained in a low voice, "Chunyan had a severe hemorrhage during childbirth and could no longer have children. Aunt Hu wanted a grandson, so your Uncle Hu and Aunt Hu brought back a son from another place. Some families can't afford to raise their children, so they give them away."

Yunling nodded. She had watched TV dramas before. In those days, there was no family planning policy, and people didn't know about contraception. They would often give birth as soon as they got pregnant. It was normal for a family to have five or six children. If they really couldn't afford to raise them, and they couldn't let their children starve, they could only give them away.
