Chapter 24 There is a melon

Zhang Guihua estimated for a moment and said, "About two pounds, enough to make some cured meat for the New Year."

Qin Yan glanced at her grandmother and whispered, "I want to eat dumplings."

Zhang Guihua pinched her cheek and said, "I'll give you dumplings for Chinese New Year."

She looked at the small half-basin of pig's blood that Old Mrs. Hu was carrying; she was truly a shrewd old lady.

Yunling also noticed and said, "That old lady has really good legs; she followed the wild boar the whole way."

She was stunned, watching as the elderly woman with gray hair moved with incredible speed.

"That's right. When Grandma Hu was young, her hunting skills were better than those of the young men in the team. I didn't expect that she would still be as good as ever at her age," Zhang Guihua said with emotion.

When she was little, she often saw Grandma Hu carrying strings of pheasants and rabbits down the mountain. Back then, regulations weren't strict, and being able to hunt was a skill.

Suddenly, a cry of surprise rang out.

Yunling squeezed forward and saw the wild boar's head being chopped off. The team's butcher began to dissect the wild boar, which was covered in blood. However, the group was not afraid at all; instead, they were very excited.

The scorekeeper, Uncle Liu, organized everyone to line up.

Zhang Guihua, holding the hands of two children, gestured for Yunling to follow, and quickly joined the front of the line.

"Mother!" Liu Yun shouted.

Just as Liu Yun was slacking off, she heard someone say that the team had caught a wild boar. She rushed to find her mother-in-law, but only saw her second sister-in-law working hard in the field. Her mother-in-law was nowhere to be seen.

After asking around, I learned that my mother-in-law had arrived long ago.

Zhang Guihua: "I heard you, I heard you. Keep an eye on the two children."

Liu Yun nodded hurriedly, took Qin Tao's hand and made her hold her sister's hand, glanced at his third sister-in-law beside him, and asked, "What's going on? The wild boars have all come down the mountain."

Before Yunling could answer, Qin Yan excitedly recounted her encounter with the wild boar in a loud voice, which was heard by everyone in the queue nearby.

Aunt Zhao, who was standing behind Zhang Guihua, saw Qin Yan's excited expression and asked, "Aren't you afraid?"

Qin Yan chuckled, "As long as there's meat to eat, I'm not afraid."

Aunt Zhao chuckled and said, "Guihua, look how much your child has been craving the stir-fried meat."

Zhang Guihua: "How come I remember... just a few days ago, Xiaolong and Xiaohu were still lying on the courtyard wall, asking us for meat. When we didn't give it to them, they even came to our door asking for more."

The people around laughed, and Aunt Qian behind them said directly, "Your two boys took two of my eggs a few days ago. When are you going to give them back to me?"

What annoys me most are the two children from the Zhao family. They're not very old, but they're always stealing chickens and eggs.

Aunt Zhao looked skeptical: "My family doesn't lack eggs. My sons, Xiaolong and Xiaohu, have eaten eggs every morning since they were little. Everyone in the village knows that. How could I possibly take your eggs?"

Aunt Qian laughed in exasperation: "You don't know? A couple of days ago at noon, I heard my chickens clucking incessantly. As soon as I went outside, I saw your Xiaolong and Xiaohu climbing over the yard wall. I even chased them to your door. Your second daughter-in-law, Lanhua, happened to come out. After figuring things out, she promised to bring me two eggs the next day, but she hasn't shown up since. Lanhua, isn't that right?"

Zhang Lanhua glanced at her mother-in-law with a troubled expression.

Aunt Zhao glared at her, then looked at Aunt Qian and said, "Is it really that big of a deal? It's just two eggs! My eldest son's monthly salary could buy you countless eggs! You're so stingy and miserly. No wonder your son doesn't want you and would rather be a live-in son-in-law."

Yunling's eyes lit up—there's something to it!

The next second, a mechanical voice rang in my mind.

[Ding! Mission: Why did Qian Mingda become a live-in son-in-law?]

She stared intently at Aunt Zhao.

If you know more, please tell me more.

Aunt Zhao saw Aunt Qian's face change instantly, and she raised her chin even higher, saying smugly, "You deserve it! Mingda is such a promising child, but you forced him to become a live-in son-in-law. So what if you hurt your body when you gave birth to Mingda? Can you blame Mingda for that? It was your carelessness that caused you to fall down. But you're so petty and blame everything on Mingda. You've treated Mingda badly since he was little, deducted from his pay, and made him do all the work. He was never full when he was little. Now that he's a live-in son-in-law, at least he can eat his fill."

Aunt Qian was furious and said angrily, "How I treat my son is none of your business! How dare you criticize me? Look at yourself! You've always doted on Zhao Wu since he was a child. You finally got a worker's job, and you gave it to Zhao Wu. Your own son is stuck farming in the countryside. At least my son eats well, dresses well, and has a good job at his in-laws' house. What about your own son?"

She said smugly, "People say you're a good stepmother to your face, but behind your back everyone calls you a fool."

[Ding! Mission: How did Zhao Wu get his job?]

Yunling's eyes lit up even more, and she found a good spot to become one of the many onlookers.

The people present stared intently at each other, glancing at one person and then another. They had all heard about these old stories before, but this time it was different; it came from the person involved.

Aunt Zhao looked at Aunt Qian, who was standing tall and proud, and pushed her, saying loudly, "What do you know? That was left by someone's own mother. If it's not given to their own son, who else would it be given to?"

She wanted to give it to her own son, and even took him to their home, but they refused and kicked her out. She lost all face.

Aunt Qian stumbled from the push, but after regaining her balance, she immediately pushed him back, asking suspiciously, "Are you really that kind?"

She couldn't believe it.

Aunt Zhao looked at him with disdain and said scornfully, "Do you think everyone is like you, abusing their own son? I have always treated both children fairly and justly."
