Chapter 29 Shallow Eyelids

"Osmanthus." A rough female voice rang out from outside.

Qin Tiantian recognized Aunt Zhao's voice and raised an eyebrow, saying, "Mom, Aunt Zhao is here."

Zhang Guihua's face immediately fell. She had never seen such a boastful person. The two of them were not that close, but every time he got something good, he would come to her house to show off. He said to Qin Tiantian, "When you make money in the future, remember to buy me a couple of clothes so I can go out and show them off and let your Aunt Zhao see."

None of her three sons cared about her, but they were all very good to their wives.

"Mom, I will." Qin Tiantian readily agreed.

Seeing Zhao Guihua come out of the kitchen, Yunling added a few bundles of firewood and quickly slipped out as well. Seeing a few heads of garlic on the windowsill, she bent down to peel them, acting as a bystander.

As soon as Zhao Guihua came out, she saw Aunt Zhao wearing a dark blue floral shirt, black pants, and People's Liberation Army shoes. She was swaying back and forth like a young woman, with a proud smile on her face. Her eldest daughter-in-law was standing to the side, covering her eyes.

She said with a forced smile, "Your son bought you new clothes again. How much did it cost this time? Your eldest daughter-in-law didn't make a fuss."

The two families live close by, and you can hear each other if they speak even slightly loudly, especially when they are arguing.

Every time Zhao Wu buys new clothes for Aunt Zhao, the two women would argue.

Aunt Zhao smiled smugly, her mouth wide open, and said, "I'm her mother-in-law. If she dares to cause trouble, I'll teach her a lesson. Old Zhao, look at this shirt. My son bought it for me specially. It's so nice. You can't even find one like it in the county town."

“Indeed, I’ve never seen one at the supply and marketing cooperative.” Liu Yun said with envy, and seeing the smile on Aunt Zhao’s face, he added, “Aunt Zhao, can I borrow it for a bit later?”

Aunt Zhao's face immediately fell, and she replied perfunctorily, "We'll talk about it later."

She glanced at Liu Yun and cursed inwardly, "Dream on! She's only just started using it and she already has the nerve to ask to borrow it. Her skin is thicker than a shoe sole."

He then gave Zhang Guihua a meaningful look and said cryptically, "Old Zhao, you should also make some new clothes for your daughter-in-law. Look at the clothes she's wearing now, I remember she's been wearing them for many years, and they have more than a dozen patches."

After saying that, he clicked his tongue twice.

Liu Yun: "Isn't that right? This is the dress I bought when I got married. But the material is so good that I can wear it for a few more years."

Yunling looked at her sister-in-law's earnest explanation and then at her mother-in-law's unpleasant expression, and tried her best to suppress her laughter.

Zhang Guihua glared at Liu Yun.

Liu Yun didn't notice that his eyes were fixed on Aunt Zhao's clothes, wishing he could tear them off and put them on himself.

That's so petty.

Zhang Guihua said, "Your son is so good to you. I advised you to treat Zhao Wu well back then. Now you've got what you deserve!"

She looked at Aunt Zhao with a smile, as if she thought I had a lot of foresight, and said, "Your own son probably isn't as filial as Zhao Wu. Over the years, I've never seen him give you anything; on the contrary, he keeps taking money from you."

Aunt Zhao recalled how her second son had asked for money a few days ago, and when she refused, he had pushed her away. Feeling a pang of sadness, but not wanting to be laughed at by others, she smiled and said, "That child is filial; he always wants to buy me things to nourish my body."

Zhang Guihua nodded with a half-smile and said, "If you say I'm filial, then I'll be filial!"

Aunt Zhao felt a lump in her throat and lost all interest in showing off. She said, "I'm going back now. My eldest son and his wife will be back for dinner tonight."

As soon as Aunt Zhao left, Zhang Guihua saw Liu Yun looking like she wanted to go out with her, and pointed at her nose and scolded, "You short-sighted girl, all you know how to do is stare at other people's things."

Liu Yun snapped out of her daze and saw her mother-in-law's unpleasant expression. For a moment, she felt embarrassed and dared not speak.

Zhang Guihua took a deep breath: "Didn't I give you the fabric for the Spring Festival two years ago? Where did the clothes you made go?"

Liu Yun's heart skipped a beat. He lowered his head and stammered, not daring to speak.

She did manage to make clothes out of the fabric, and she even wore them back to her parents' home. Coincidentally, her younger sister was going on a blind date, so she asked her to borrow the fabric. Her sister refused and sold it to her for six yuan. The money is still hidden on the kang (a heated brick bed).

Zhang Guihua knew Liu Yun's character; she must have sold her for money or exchanged her for something else. Her own family knew this, and she wasn't biased, but outsiders didn't, and they thought she was abusing Liu Yun.

She said irritably, "You'd better dress neatly for Chinese New Year this year, or you'll embarrass me."

Liu Yun immediately nodded and assured him, "I will definitely do it."

After saying that, he gave a fawning smile.

Zhang Guihua nodded and went back to the kitchen to help cook.

Having watched the commotion to her heart's content, Yunling picked up the peeled garlic and walked briskly into the kitchen.

Liu Yun knew that Yun Ling was laughing at her, but she didn't dare to make a scene, and just glared at her.

After a while, dinner was ready. It was a very lavish meal with plenty of meat. Qin Yan stared at the meat on the plate, wondering which pieces she would grab later.
