Chapter 30: Don't get yourself involved.

When Zhang Guihua brought the dishes up, she saw the drool on Qin Yan's lips, her mouth twitched, and she said, "Little Yanzi, wipe your mouth."

It's like I haven't eaten in eight hundred years.

Qin Yan stared intently at the meat on the table, then wiped her mouth with her sleeve.

Zhang Guihua forced herself to look away.

Wang Xiuxiu heard it too. She placed the stir-fried eggs with chives on the table, and when she saw Qin Yan's appearance, she frowned slightly and said in a low voice, "Little Swallow, don't you have a handkerchief in your pocket?"

Qin Yan nodded, her eyes darting around, looking a little guilty. Her handkerchief was dirty, and she hadn't had time to wash it yet.

Wang Xiuxiu knew her daughter well, and frowned, saying, "Remember to use a handkerchief to wipe next time. Wash your own clothes today."

Qin Yan obediently said, "Okay."

The dishes are all served.

The men of the Qin family have not returned yet.

Wang Xiuxiu glanced at her mother-in-law, hesitated for a moment, and said, "Mom, I'll go see why Dad and the others haven't come back yet?"

Zhang Guihua: "Wait a little longer, they should be back soon."

No sooner had he finished speaking than a series of hurried footsteps sounded at the door.

Qin Hai’s loud voice rang out: “I can smell the aroma of meat even before I get home. My wife’s cooking skills have improved again.”

Wang Xiuxiu blushed and explained, "Today's meat was made by Mom and Tiantian; I was just helping out."

Qin Hai patted Qin Tiantian's head and praised, "Little sister is great."

Qin Tiantian felt a little pain from being rubbed and quickly dodged away, complaining, "Second brother, you're not allowed to do that next time."

She was too strong; sometimes even a light tap would cause her a lot of pain.

"Okay, okay, I understand," Qin Hai replied cheerfully.

After quickly washing my hands, I walked into the house and saw my daughter staring intently at the meat on the table. I smiled and said, "My daughter is hungry. Did she get scared today?"

As soon as I returned to the brigade, I heard people in the brigade say that when the third brother's wife, Aunt Zhou, and her two daughters were cutting pig feed, they encountered a wild boar.

My heart was pounding with fear. I only breathed a sigh of relief when I heard that no one was hurt and that the wild boar had been killed.

On the other end, Qin Baoguo pulled Zhang Guihua aside and asked her what exactly happened and whether she was frightened.

Zhang Guihua shook her head and said, "It should be fine."

Qin Baoguo felt relieved. "Let's eat!"

The family sat down, chopsticks in hand, looking at the glistening meat on the table.

Qin Chuan glanced at Yun Ling out of the corner of his eye. Her eyes were bright, her complexion was rosy, and she was full of energy. She seemed to be alright, so Qin Chuan breathed a sigh of relief.

Zhang Guihua also picked up her chopsticks, took a piece of meat, and said, "Let's eat!"

As soon as he finished speaking, everyone reached for their chopsticks.

The amount of meat on the plate was visibly decreasing. If it weren't for the Qin family's rule that you should only take more meat after you've finished eating, it would probably be gone in no time.

Yunling was quick too; she stretched out her chopsticks and deftly picked up a large piece of meat, a mix of lean and fatty pieces.

The wild boar meat was stewed until very tender, melting in your mouth, with a rich and savory flavor and a slight gamey taste. However, for the Qin family, who rarely eat meat throughout the year, it was already quite delicious.

After finishing her meal, Yunling picked up another piece of lean meat. It was a bit tough, but she didn't mind.

After eating five more slices, the meat in the enamel bowl was almost gone, with only small pieces left, which I poked around with my chopsticks.

Yunling didn't pick up a piece of radish, but instead picked up a piece of radish.

The radish was stewed with the meat, so it was already very flavorful and tasted amazing.

She ate with her chopsticks in a flash, and in no time, the radish was gone.

After eating for a while longer, I finally felt full. I secretly pulled my clothes out a little and let out a soft sigh of relief.

Today it was Wang Xiuxiu's turn to clean up the dishes. Yunling took a walk around the yard as usual, then moved a small stool and sat down next to Qin Chuan.

He whispered, "I'm going to the county town tomorrow. The things my parents sent me should have arrived by now."

Upon hearing this, Qin Chuan asked, "Do you need me to go with you? I remember you've never been to the county town before."

"Do your parents agree?" Yunling asked softly.

There was nothing shameful about her going to the county town; she just wanted to pick up a package, have a good meal at a state-run restaurant, and buy some things at the supply and marketing cooperative.

Qin Chuan smiled and said, "I will agree."

Sure enough, early the next morning, Qin Chuan woke Yun Ling up, and the couple took an oxcart to the county town.

Yunling observed her surroundings the whole way. The county town was not as prosperous as she had imagined. There were no tall buildings, no bustling markets, only a few shops, and not many pedestrians on the road. It looked very deserted.

"Should we go to the supply and marketing cooperative or the post office first?" Qin Chuan asked, looking at Yun Ling who was glancing around.

Yunling blinked and said, "The supply and marketing cooperative, and then the post office on the way back?"

Qin Chuan had no objections and brought Yun Ling to the supply and marketing cooperative.

Yunling looked curiously at the goods on the counter. The variety of goods was not as great as in later years, and the packaging was very simple. She bought a pound of red date cake, a towel, an enamel mug, and a bar of soap. She also wanted to buy a shirt, a pair of pants, and a pair of shoes. In the end, she used her remaining cloth coupons to buy three meters of cloth. When she was about to leave, she saw the kettle next to her and wanted to buy it, but she didn't have any coupons.

Qin Chuan followed silently behind, helping to carry things. He watched as Yun Ling bought one item after another. He knew he had to hurry up and make money, otherwise he wouldn't be able to support his wife.

After shopping for less than an hour, they had bought everything they needed. Looking at the clock on the wall of the supply and marketing cooperative, it was almost nine o'clock. Yunling looked at Qin Chuan, blinked, and asked, "Do you want to go to the state-run canteen for lunch?"

Seeing Qin Chuan's handsome appearance, Yun Ling generously said, "It's my treat."

Seeing Yunling's distressed expression, Qin Chuan smiled and said, "No need, I have money. Keep your money for yourself."

Qin Chuan carried the things, and Yun Ling took some of them, following behind him. Nowadays, the rules between men and women are strict. Even if a married couple walks down the street, they cannot hold hands or walk too closely.

Yunling was very curious about this era. She looked around at the surrounding environment, which was generally dilapidated and not as lively as the market in her hometown. However, the people passing by all looked very energetic and had bright, piercing eyes.

After walking for a while, we passed through a small alley where a group of young men in military green uniforms were robbing people.

Looking at the old man with his back deeply bent, his face covered in bruises, and his clothes tattered.

Yunling was stunned.

"Let's go." Qin Chuan grabbed Yun Ling's arm.

Yunling couldn't help but look in that direction.

Qin Chuan looked at Yun Ling, who kept turning her head back, and reached out to turn her head back.

He quickly walked away from that direction and whispered, "Don't go near those people if you see them again."

Yunling has some understanding of this era. When she was in high school, she read a book of Yang Jiang's autobiography. A few words in it were described in a light and simple way, but they were shocking to people living in that era.

Meeting Qin Chuan's earnest gaze, Yun Ling nodded heavily. She felt sorry for the old man, but she was just an ordinary person and couldn't sacrifice herself for others.
