Chapter 343 It's Warmer

"Oh, I see. Can I make some noodle soup? It'll still be hot." Li Mengyao asked as she walked from the bedroom toward the kitchen.

"Okay, make some steamed buns or flatbread too, don't just drink porridge," Jian Anping added. Then she went back into the room and let Jian Ming sit down first.

"Uncle, dinner will be ready soon. Let's eat before we leave."

“Okay, okay,” Jianming sat down and secretly glanced at Xiao Lingfeng next to him.

He knew this was Jian Ning's husband. He had come to Jian Ning's wedding and remembered him after just one glance from afar.

This man looks capable; I heard he's highly valued in the military.

Xiao Lingfeng knew his wife had never liked this uncle, but he was still an elder. Seeing Jian Ming looking over, she smiled at him.

"My brother and I will come over to help you move in a little while. Please let us know if there's anything else you need help with."

"No need, no need, it's nothing, the two of us can take it."

Seeing Jian Ning's stern face upon hearing Xiao Lingfeng's words, Jian Ming quickly shook his head in refusal. He was truly afraid of his niece. It was best to avoid provoking her.

"Let's go home. Can't you see they don't want you? Why are you rushing to them? Bro, take this antidote pill. Don't run into any more poisonous snakes."

Jian Ning tossed a small bottle to Jian Anping, then pulled Xiao Lingfeng away without looking back.

"Isn't this a bit much? He's your uncle, after all. Shouldn't we help him if we can?" Xiao Lingfeng walked out of the house and asked in a low voice.

"Don't worry about him. In my heart, we've already been good enough to them. I saved him today because my brother doesn't have any relatives left."

Besides, they've been quite well-behaved these past two years, not bothering us much. They've been quite sensible. This apocalypse has smoothed out their rough edges; they know how to behave now. That's a good thing.

"You're just all talk and no action!" Xiao Lingfeng tapped Jian Ning's forehead twice with his finger. He then walked home through the side door.

Jianming drank two large bowls of dumpling soup in one go, and it was so delicious that he almost swallowed his tongue.

This dumpling soup had scallions, potatoes, cabbage, and the aroma of lard. How long had it been since he'd had such a delicious meal?

Moreover, the white steamed buns were so delicious; even the simplest meal was a delicacy in his eyes.

Jian Anping helped Jian Ji'an and fed him a bowl of dumpling soup. After he finished eating, she and Jian Ming went over to help with the move.

Actually, all that was left inside the adobe house were some bowls and chopsticks.

There were also a few simple stools that I made myself out of wood and some bottles and jars that I had collected.

Jian Anping stuffed the contents into two large sacks, carrying one in each hand as he walked out.

"Anping, don't carry all of them, they're quite heavy. Give me one bag." Jianming chased after him, asking for it.

"No need, it's not that heavy. Uncle, which floor do you live on? Do you all live in a prefab house by your own?"

Jian Anping did not give him the item, as Jian Ming was not young anymore.

Carrying things and still having to climb the mountain, I don't have that much energy, and I was quite frightened just now, so I guess I'm just barely holding on.

“We’ve been allocated a second-floor unit. It’s a prefabricated house with two bedrooms, which is much better than this mud-brick house. It has water and electricity, and we can take a shower. It’s no different from living in an apartment building before. Your aunt was so happy that she cried several times.”

These hard times are finally starting to look up. Oh, and your sister found a boyfriend here. He's a soldier at the base, a really nice guy, just a few years older than her.

I heard that if there are any spare prefabricated houses available this time, Xiao Li can apply for one. You must come to his wedding!

I can't afford to put on a decent wedding right now.

I just hope that you, as the older brother, will at least go and see them off. Of the Jian family here, only our two families are left. We have no relatives or friends, nothing at all. It makes me sad just thinking about it.

"Uncle, don't worry, I'll definitely go. I'll also help with the dowry arrangements; a daughter can't marry off empty-handed, can she?"

I'll ask Xiaoning later if she knows of any suitable wedding dresses, so I can find one for my sister.

Jian Anping knew that Jian Ning had a lot of good things, and she didn't lack clothes or anything. Since she had asked, Jian Ning couldn't possibly refuse.

"Thank you so much, nephew."

Jianming secretly wiped his eyes. It had to be a relative; even if the bones were broken, they were still connected. Now that this nephew was here, he could finally get some help.

Jian Anping helped deliver all the things to the door of the wooden house, but didn't go inside. He just said he was worried about the house and left the things at the door before going back.

When I got home, Jian Jian was already lying in bed, snoring away.

No wonder, he probably hadn't had a good night's sleep in such a soft bed in a while. I didn't disturb him, just poured him a glass of warm water by the bedside before going back to my own room.

The two children were already asleep. Only Li Mengyao had the lamp on and was knitting.

When she saw him return, she asked in a low voice, "Are you cold? Go soak your feet, there's hot water in the thermos."

"It's not cold. It's much better than it was a while ago."

"I'm really puzzled. Aren't snakes supposed to hibernate? How did it wake up in this minus ten degrees Celsius?" Jian Anping sat next to Li Mengyao and scratched his head.

"Who cares how it woke up? The rats outside have all mutated, not to mention snakes, maybe in a few days ants and cockroaches will all come."

"The weather's getting warmer, I'll have to put up all the window screens later, just in case the mosquitoes bite the kids."

“My wife is right. Tomorrow I’ll go to the county and get more window screens, and install several more layers. The mosquitoes are getting worse than before; even with bigger gaps, they still won’t be kept out.”

Jian Anping didn't really want to spend the summer either; it was too hot, and there were so many mosquitoes and other insects.

In winter, you can just stay indoors less. It's just a bit cold. In the sweltering summer, air conditioning is a waste of electricity, and it's hot everywhere outside.

Even though his body is less sensitive to hot and cold now, he still feels sorry for his wife and children.

"Your younger brother, are you planning to let him stay at our house for a few days? He seems to be recovering quite well. Didn't Xiao Ning say he's no longer infected?"

Li Mengyao asked again. It wasn't that she was petty; she was just used to having no outsiders at home, and the sudden appearance of an injured person made things a bit inconvenient.

"If he doesn't have a fever after breakfast tomorrow, I'll carry him back home."

Today I also learned where my uncle lives. The house is quite nice, and there are soldiers standing guard at the door. It looks safer than this villa area.

The houses are quite close together, so if someone speaks loudly, the person across the hall can probably hear them; there's no soundproofing.
