Chapter 52 New Year's Greetings and Lucky Money

After the family enjoyed a hot New Year's Eve dinner, everyone's stomachs were round and full.

Chen Yunyun led the children for a stroll in the yard. The moon overhead was round, big, and very bright.

Compared to the scenes of later generations where the moon is nowhere to be seen when looking up, the moonlight tonight is exceptionally beautiful.

"Cattail leaves, peach leaves, grape leaves, herbaceous and woody plants; plum blossoms, osmanthus blossoms, rose blossoms, fragrance in spring and fragrance in autumn."

When the mood struck her, Chen Yunyun couldn't help but recite a few lines.

She plans to plant peach, plum, and pear trees outside the courtyard, and grapevines and roses inside.

At that time, there will be different scenery in all four seasons.

When you have nothing to do, you can relax and play in the yard.

The eldest son moved a stool under the plum tree, then put firewood from the kitchen into the yard, took a brazier, and put the firewood in it to burn.

The firewood illuminated the snow, making everyone's face exceptionally clear.

At this moment, the wind and snow stopped, and the family of four sat down together.

"Mother, the story of Journey to the West hasn't been finished yet."

Niu Niu leaned against Chen Yunyun's chest, the fire warming her whole body.

Chen Yunyun laughed, "Does Da Wa still want to hear it?"

Da Wa nodded, and Chen Yunyun continued speaking.

"They traveled to the territory of the Women's Kingdom, where there was a large river..."

The firelight shone on everyone's faces, and apart from Chen Yunyun's storytelling, the only sounds in the courtyard were the crackling of burning firewood, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

The story went on until midnight.

Chen Yunyun, who usually goes to bed early, is now extremely sleepy, but the children are all too excited to go to sleep.

"If you don't go to sleep soon, Mom will tell you ghost stories!"

I thought the children would be afraid of ghost stories, but to my surprise, they were all very excited.

"Mother, what kind of demon are you? Can you tell me?"

Tsk, they shot themselves in the foot; what a blunder!

Chen Yunyun sighed and explained, "I'm not a demon, I'm human..."

"Then how do you know magic, Mother?"

This is complicated to explain. Chen Yunyun can't exactly tell the children that she was reincarnated from a book, can she?

She gave an ambiguous answer, "Mom was just lucky, so she knew how."

The eldest child asked in a muffled voice, "Mother, will that one from before appear?"

Upon hearing this, Niu Niu looked at Chen Yunyun nervously, afraid of missing a single word she said.

"Of course not, your mother will be your mother from now on, and I will treat you well."

After hearing her words, the children seemed to come alive, and color returned to their faces.

They all hated the original Chen Yunyun and even plotted to kill her.

But when Mother came, everything changed.

They asked for nothing, only hoping that these wonderful days could last longer, much longer.

"Don't worry, Mom will always be with you," Chen Yunyun said softly, embracing the children.

Finally, the children became sleepy, so hot water was prepared and everyone washed their feet.

Chen Yunyun poured the water out the door, and when she came back, she found a man standing between the two plum trees.

The cool moonlight made his unparalleled beauty even more striking.

Rong Yan is so handsome, he's exactly Chen Yunyun's type.

Although she saw him every day, Chen Yunyun was still momentarily stunned by his beauty.

Coming to her senses, Chen Yunyun asked, "Is something wrong?"

Rong Yan stood to the side of her, his figure tall and slender. He spoke indifferently, "None of these three children are yours?"

He must have overheard Chen Yunyun's conversation with the children.

She nodded in response, "What's wrong?"

She heard Rong Yan's voice was lower than usual. He said, "Why?"

"Why what?" Chen Yunyun was a little confused and didn't quite understand Rong Yan's thought process.

"They're not your descendants, so why are you treating them so well? What are you up to?"

Under the moonlight, Rong Yan's voice was cold.

As soon as the Lingyun Sword was drawn, its sharp tip pressed against Chen Yunyun's throat.

A chill crept up her back from her feet, and Chen Yunyun sensed a strong killing intent emanating from Rong Yan.

"No, are you serious?"

Rong Yan's sword tip didn't budge. Chen Yunyun was puzzled. She had been feeding him good food and drink every day, yet he still wanted to kill her.

When asked what her intentions were towards the children, she replied...

The children have neither money nor power, so what could she possibly be after?

After venting her frustrations, Chen Yunyun couldn't help but glare at Rong Yan, "You ungrateful wretch, I won't cook meat for you tomorrow."

She slapped the blade of the Lingyun Sword away with her palm and went straight into the house.

In the darkness of night, Lingyun emitted a mournful sound. Rong Yan sheathed his sword, and all was silent.

Even a stepmother with no blood relation can treat a child as her own and take care of him in every way, while...

Rong Yan wore a cold smile. That's right, not everyone in the world is as cold-blooded and ruthless as his birth mother.

In a flash, Rong Yan's figure disappeared from the spot.

The next morning, Chen Yunyun got up early to get busy, and the children woke up as well.

The eldest child noticed the red envelope next to the pillow first. "Mother, what's this?"

Niu Niu and Sanwa each have one.

I carefully tore open the paper, and there it was—a one-yuan coin.

"Mother!"

Chen Yunyun smiled and said, "Keep it; this is your New Year's money."

"Once the snow melts, you can go to town and buy whatever you want."

These days, if a child gets even a penny for the Lunar New Year, it's considered a sign of being pampered by their family.

Their mother would give them a dollar at a time, even the third child who couldn't remember anything had some.

The eldest child clutched the coins, saying, "Mother, there's too much money."

"Keep it, buy some useful things, and spend it where it's needed."

Chen Yunyun's tone left no room for refusal, so the children had no choice but to accept it.

Niu Niu looked at the money in her hand. Her previous stepmother had kept a tight grip on the money, usually keeping it close to her body.

She's never touched money before in her entire life.

"Little money-grubber, keep your money safe while you're tending the fire, don't burn it."

Seeing that Niu Niu was looking at money while tending the fire, Chen Yunyun couldn't help but tease her.

Niu Niu blushed, carefully put the money in her bag, and looked delighted.

I also had dumplings for breakfast, which are light and good for the stomach.

After drinking the dumpling soup, the heat slowly rose up, making it extremely warm.

Rong Yan appeared out of thin air in the courtyard. His black robe with gold thread was soaked in blood. He was unsteady on his feet and swayed precariously.

On the pristine white snow, there were specks of bright red blood.

This person has disappeared again, covered in injuries, and looks much worse than before.

But he managed to stay upright and released his prey from his storage ring, which turned out to be a large tiger with black and white stripes.

Rong Yan didn't look at the group of people before flashing into the void beside Chen Yunyun.

Chen Yunyun walked closer to the tiger and saw that it must have died recently, as its fur was still warm.

The tiger weighed about 300 pounds and had shiny fur.

Chen Yunyun had eaten the wolf meat that Rong Yan brought back once before, and she didn't want to cook it anymore because it was really not tasty.

This tiger meat probably isn't very good, so what should we do with it?

Chen Yunyun thought of Zhang the hunter, "Let's go to Zhang the hunter's house."
