Chapter 8 Niu Niu is a Black-Hearted Lotus

Chen Yunyun stuffed the remaining cotton into the scraps of fabric and made a few pairs of socks. She had intended to sew a couple more pairs of shoe soles. However, her skills were limited, and she had learned a lot from her grandmother before, but so much time had passed that she could hardly remember it all. She could only try to recall what she had learned as she worked.

Da Wa and Niu Niu exchanged a glance without making a sound, both secretly observing their stepmother's movements.

It was already a miracle that they had warm clothes to wear in the afternoon, and to see their stepmother making shoes for them in the evening was truly unbelievable.

When Niu Niu and Da Wa went out to collect firewood, they chatted for a long time on the mountain.

It's such a shame that the older brother couldn't kill his stepmother with the help of the wild boar! But how did the stepmother manage to escape the wild boar?

This morning, Da Wa went to the place from last night and found wild boar footprints, but the wild boar was gone. Da Wa couldn't figure it out.

Niu Niu suddenly spoke up: "Could it be that stepmothers these days are possessed by monsters?"

The little one began to present evidence to support her theory: "Look, she hardly hits us anymore, her temper has improved, and her cooking is much better than before. Besides, where did all that food come from when she didn't go to town?"

"Brother, do you remember the ribs from last night? They were even more delicious than the stew at the village chief's house! Where did our stepmother get all these good things? And she can kill a wild boar all by herself. Do you think she's some kind of mountain demon in disguise?"

Xu Jingrun looked serious. His guess was different from Niu Niu's. He had only heard about supernatural tales when villagers told stories, and no one had ever actually seen them.

If we delve deeper and think about it carefully, besides the possibility of a different stepmother, there is another plausible possibility—the stepmother wanted to sell them.

As for the inexplicable wild boar, it's possible that he was delusional and just imagining things!

But regardless of the possibility, the situation remains unclear for the two siblings.

They discussed it for an afternoon and decided to wait and see. They kept an eye on Chen Yunyun's movements while cooking dinner that evening.

Chen Yunyun had already made three pairs of socks. When she saw her take out white cotton and stuff it into the socks to make the fourth pair, Niu Niu suddenly turned her head to the side, her eyes quickly turning red. She tried hard to hold back the soreness in her nose and almost forgot to light the fire.

Her mother was frail and devoted all her care and attention to the baby in her womb. She would occasionally take care of her older brother, while she, a little girl, was caught in the middle, unloved by both her father and mother.

After her mother died, her grandmother fell seriously ill, and she did all the housework, yet she was still scolded by her grandmother as a "good-for-nothing"...

I thought that like other girls in the village, I would just have to endure until I got married.

Unexpectedly, Grandma died, and Dad married a stepmother who cruelly abused them.

Her older brother could work in the fields, but she was too young and weak to do so, so she could only stay at home and became the punching bag for her stepmother.

So she pretended to be obedient and sensible, trying her best to please her stepmother, handing her water, massaging her shoulders, taking care of all the housework, and even wearing summer clothes to wash her stepmother's cotton-padded clothes in the snow and icy river...

Her stepmother wouldn't appreciate her efforts, nor did she need her stepmother's gratitude. All she wanted was to survive in this family, wait for her father to return, or wait until she became strong enough.

Then, that wicked stepmother will know what regret is.

The thought of revenge had been sustaining her, but seeing her stepmother making cotton socks for her today, she began to feel a sense of erosion.

Niu Niu gritted her teeth, cursing herself for being so pathetic! All she had was a cotton coat and socks! And she couldn't help but burst into tears, starting to sing the praises of her stepmother!

How despicable!

Niu Niu bit her tongue until it bled before she could suppress her surging emotions. When she looked back at her stepmother, her eyes were unfathomable.

The family ate a hot dinner, and the children washed their feet and put on new socks.

"Just wear these for now, I'll make you shoes in a couple of days."

Looking at the three dolls in front of her, they were completely transformed compared to when she first arrived. Each of them was wearing warm cotton clothes and socks, their faces were clean, and they looked quite energetic.

A sense of satisfaction welled up in Chen Yunyun's heart; she had finally experienced the joy of raising a child.

I gave my eldest son a stern talking-to at noon, and he behaved well while cooking dinner that night. He didn't say much, slurped up all the noodles in his bowl, and even took the initiative to clean up the dishes.

Niu Niu goes without saying; she's a model of good behavior. She even serves her soup and asks if she wants some first. She's so sensible.

The third baby is also easier to take care of than other babies. He doesn't cry or fuss. When he's hungry, he'll quietly say he's hungry, and when he's not hungry, he'll play by himself.

Chen Yunyun was extremely satisfied.

While the eldest child was washing the dishes, she applied the medicine to the youngest child again.

Tiger's mother was frightened and probably won't cause trouble anytime soon. However, that brat Tiger might not listen to reason.

Chen Yunyun has little patience for unruly children, especially those who keep accusing others of burning, killing, and looting.

If you actually run into her, don't blame her for being ruthless.
