Chapter 9 Taking the Kids Out on the Street

There's not much entertainment in the countryside at night, so after they'd digested enough, they went to bed.

The children quickly fell asleep, and Chen Yunyun sat up and began her cultivation in the dark.

Although I didn't experience the effect of that half luck value, practicing this technique can make one feel light and agile.

She clearly felt the changes in her body throughout the day, so she decided to practice this set of exercises as a way to strengthen her body.

At dawn, the roosters in the village crowed one after another. Chen Yunyun got up and told the children to get dressed, as she was going to take them to town today.

The mountain road is long, so they need to leave early.

I ate something quickly and went out before dawn.

The third child stayed obediently on Chen Yunyun's back, playing with his fingers. Chen Yunyun held Niu Niu's hand, and the eldest child followed behind her.

"Come closer, don't get lost," Chen Yunyun reminded him. Seeing that Da Wa was still walking behind her, she simply took his hand as well.

The eldest son froze for a moment, and then the group left the village.

It was almost noon when the group finally arrived in town.

The main problem is that children can't walk as fast as adults, so Chen Yunyun takes care of the children by walking for a while and then resting for a while, which slows down their pace.

Upon arriving in town, Chen Yunyun could clearly sense Da Wa's nervousness; his hands were sweaty. She glanced at Da Wa, but he didn't seem to be unwell, so she decided not to ask.

The four of them first went to the post office to write a letter to the husband who was originally in the army. After affixing the stamps and paying the money, they went to the state-run restaurant in town.

Chen Yunyun had prepared the tickets and money, and ordered two dishes: cabbage and tofu, and stir-fried garlic sprouts.

The restaurant wasn't crowded, and the dishes were served quickly. Restaurants these days are simple and honest; the meat and vegetables were good value for money. The two bowls were full, and Chen Yunyun was glad she hadn't ordered too much.

After tasting the stir-fried garlic sprouts, she found the flavor to be alright, but there was too much fatty meat. Chen Yunyun doesn't like fatty meat, but she noticed that the two older children seemed to enjoy it, so she proactively put some in their bowls.

I ate the cabbage and tofu dish next to me. The flavor of this dish was relatively light, the tofu was tender, and the cabbage was fresh and flavorful. Paired with a bowl of sweet potato porridge, it was quite comforting.

Chen Yunyun fed Sanwa some porridge and sweet potato, and also let him try two pieces of tofu, but he seemed to prefer twice-cooked pork, reaching out with his little hands to grab it.

Chen Yunyun carried him a little further away, and regardless of whether he understood or not, she reasoned with him, "You can't eat this fatty meat. You're still too young, and you won't be able to digest it. We'll go buy some eggs later and make steamed eggs when we get back."

As if he understood, Sanwa withdrew his waving little hand and put it into his own pocket.

Chen Yunyun was amused by him and couldn't help but give him a kiss on the cheek. Baby's face is so tender!

She looked up and saw the other two children staring at her in shock.

Chen Yunyun suppressed a laugh, paused for a moment before speaking, "Could it be... that you want it too?"

Da Wa and Niu Niu had strange expressions and didn't reply, each lowering their heads to concentrate on eating.

After leaving the state-run restaurant, it was still early, so Chen Yunyun went to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy eggs. The young girl standing behind the display case recognized her and greeted her warmly when she saw her.

"Sis, what would you like to buy?"

Chen Yunyun ordered malted milk powder and eggs. Actually, she had bought malted milk powder last time, but thinking that the mountain would be closed later, she decided to buy more to stock up.

"Big sister, we're out of eggs."

Chen Yunyun looked at the shelf, and the egg section was indeed empty.

There was a famine outside, and eggs were in short supply. As soon as they were put on the market, they were sold out.

Chen Yunyun took the malted milk powder and bought some whole grains.

Looking down at my eldest son's hands, I saw they were swollen from the cold after just one trip outside, so I bought him a pair of gloves.

I picked out a pink hair tie for Niu Niu and tied up her messy hair.

"Yes, it looks really good." Chen Yunyun praised without reservation. The little girl lowered her head, seemingly a little shy.

After buying what I needed, I prepared to head home.

Chen Yunyun was carrying things in her hands, so she couldn't hold the children's hands. She could only tell Da Wa and Niu Niu to stay close and to let her know if they couldn't walk anymore.

Da Wa walked at the very back, looking at Chen Yunyun's back, a rare look of confusion appearing in his eyes.

Taking them to the street is just to buy food, not to sell them, right?

Before even reaching the town, his heart sank to the bottom, and he pessimistically and resolutely prepared for the worst.

But she really did just take them for a walk around the streets.

Da Wa looked down at the new gray gloves in his hand. A steady stream of heat emanated from the point where his skin touched the gloves, the heat almost burning through his palm.

In his haste, he haphazardly stuffed the gloves into the pocket of his shirt, his brow furrowed.

Xujia Village is nestled deep in the mountains, surrounded by towering peaks on all sides.

Each time they enter or leave the village, they have to cross two mountains. The mountain paths are mostly narrow and long, and when they encounter steep sections, Chen Yunyun always stops to carefully remind her two children to walk slowly and watch their step.

After crossing a steep slope, they arrived at a flat and open area. Chen Yunyun put down what she was carrying and sat down on a large rock to rest.

Sanwa tugged at Chen Yunyun's clothes and whispered "Mother." Chen Yunyun understood immediately, picked up Sanwa, and found a secluded spot for him to use the toilet.

While Chen Yunyun was taking off Sanwa's pants, she felt something hit her head. She turned around and saw a small ball covered in thorns rolling on the ground.

Wait, why does this look so familiar?

Chen Yunyun took the third child to the other side and let him go to the toilet by himself, then turned around to examine the little fruit.

I broke one of the small fruits open and saw a brown fruit inside—it's a chestnut!

She looked up and saw that the ten-meter-tall tree was covered with lush green chestnuts. A gentle breeze blew, and the plump, spiky chestnuts swayed gently among the dark green leaves.
