Chapter 55: Alive

After an unknown amount of time, Xu Xingchen opened her eyes. The fire beside her was still burning, making her face a little red.

Her body ached from the aftereffects of the fever. She sat up, frowning at the dizziness before her eyes. She slowly leaned against the wall of the cave.

Then she looked around and found that Jun Haoyue was gone again. Thinking of what happened last night, she thought, maybe he went to collect firewood again.

The entrance of the cave was still making a humming sound, and the wind and snow had not stopped.

The bonfire was roaring and the flames were dancing. Xu Xingchen squinted his eyes as he watched, feeling a little sleepy.

Just as she was about to close her eyes, Jun Haoyue came back with firewood folded in one arm and his clothes in the other.

Seeing her sitting, he quickened his pace and walked to her side. Putting down the firewood in his hand, he habitually reached out to touch her forehead. He had done this action countless times when he was giving her physical treatment to reduce her fever.

Xu Xingchen had a silly look on his face as a big hand covered his forehead, making him look extremely cute.

Jun Haoyue felt that the temperature of his hand was not very high and breathed a sigh of relief. Seeing her expression, he couldn't help laughing.

"Burn silly?"

"You're the fool."

Hearing this, Xu Xingchen's face flushed, and she slapped his hand away in embarrassment and turned her head away from him.

Jun Haoyue curled the corners of his lips. He felt more at ease when he saw Xu Xingchen looking a little arrogant.

He took out the wild fruits from his coat pocket and placed them next to the fire. "It's still snowing heavily outside. The wind has died down a bit, but the snow is already knee-high overnight. We can't get back to the village until the snow stops."

As he said this, he handed the roasted wild fruit to Xu Xingchen. Xu Xingchen took it and took a small bite. "Then let's set off again after the snow stops."

Jun Haoyue shook his head, his face somewhat serious. "The situation isn't very good right now. We have no food. If the wind and snow continue, who knows how high the snow will pile up. Besides, this is in the wilderness, and it's impossible for anyone to pass by with the snow blocking the mountains. If we wait here for someone to find us, we'll probably starve to death first."

Xu Xingchen uttered an "ah" and wrinkled his face. "Don't we still have malt sugar?"

"Maltose won't fill you up, so it won't last long." Jun Haoyue looked towards the cave entrance with a distant gaze, then turned back and said, "The best approach now is to gradually close the distance to Sanwan Village. The closer we are to the village, the greater the chance of being rescued."

Xu Xingchen realized the seriousness of the current situation and nodded solemnly in agreement.

The two men packed up their belongings, threw away the cumbersome and unnecessary things, and just as they arrived at the cave entrance, they were hit by heavy snow in the face.

After a moment of hesitation, Jun Haoyue piled the unextinguished bonfire in the cave at the entrance. The burning firewood was soaked by the melted snow, and thick smoke billowed out.

But the smoke was quickly blown away by the snow and covered up. It seemed that the signal fire method was not feasible in the heavy snow, and they had to save themselves.

Jun Haoyue tore off the hem of his clothes and twisted it into a long strip. He wrapped one end around his hand and the other end around Xu Xingchen's wrist and tied a knot.

There was a raging snowstorm outside, and he couldn't hold on to Xu Xingchen and move forward. He was also afraid that they would get separated in the snow and wind, so he came up with this idea to tie them together.

In the wind and snow, all you can see is white, and you can't tell the direction with your naked eyes. However, Jun Haoyue seems to have his own navigation system, walking in front and leading the way in the wind and snow.

In the vast universe, the two figures seemed small and fragile, but they still gritted their teeth and moved forward.

After walking for an unknown amount of time, Jun Haoyue almost turned into a snowman. The resistance caused by the strong wind and blizzard, and the fact that he was carrying a person, made him consume his physical strength very quickly. His pace became more and more difficult and slower.

Even Xu Xingchen behind him was not in a much better condition. Women's physical strength and endurance are naturally weaker than men's. Her legs and feet were numb and she couldn't lift them up. She dragged herself stiffly, leaving two dragging marks behind her, which were quickly covered by the wind and snow.

Jun Haoyue was walking almost side by side with Xu Xingchen. Xu Xingchen couldn't open her eyes because of the wind and snow. She didn't dare to reach out to help Jun Haoyue, for she was afraid that her instinct to survive would drag him down.

She could only move her lips and mutter words to cheer them up, as if that could cheer them up.

Suddenly, the person next to him stumbled and fell to the ground. Xu Xingchen screamed, and as soon as he opened his mouth, the wind and snow filled his mouth, choking and choking him and causing him to cough continuously.

The one who fell to the ground got up again and patted Xu Xingchen's back with his stiff arms.

The gentle but firm pat on the back made Xu Xingchen's heart suddenly ache, and his eyes were full of soreness.

He's the one who's suffering the most right now...

Even though the distance was so close, Xu Xingchen couldn't see his face clearly. The tears in the corners of her eyes melted with the snow and turned cold, stinging her eyes and causing them to hurt.

She patted Jun Haoyue's arm, wanting those who were just walking forward to look at her. They should find a place to hide first.

However, Jun Haoyue didn't seem to feel her shouting or clapping. He just stared straight ahead and walked step by step.

Only then did Xu Xingchen realize that Jun Haoyue was no longer conscious and was moving forward entirely on instinct. She was being passively carried forward.

When they reached a slope, Jun Haoyue missed a step and rolled straight down the slope. Xu Xingchen's wrist tightened and he rolled down the slope with him. The cloth strip on his wrist was torn during the rolling.

Xu Xingchen felt dizzy and her internal organs were churning. She wanted to get up, but the boundary between black and white in front of her eyes became narrower and narrower, and finally she was swept by darkness and lost consciousness.

The wind and snow stopped without us noticing.

......

"Mommy, Mother..."

Xu Xingchen slowly opened her eyes after being patted on the cheek. After being blinded, she saw a child-like figure, Mundun, lying beside her head, calling her with a mixture of modern and ancient names.

She groaned in pain, propped herself up with her arms and tried to get up. The snow covering her body fell off in pieces. Munduner used all four limbs to support her back and helped her get up.

His ears were rumbling, and Xu Xingchen held his forehead and shook his head to get rid of the double image in front of him.

After her vision cleared, she immediately went to look for Jun Haoyue. She ran around, digging at every lump she saw, and kept calling Jun Haoyue's name, her voice gradually rising from a low voice to a roar.

No one answered.

The half piece of cloth on her wrist fluttered in the wind. Looking around, everything was white, as if she was the only one in the world.

Unable to find anyone, Xu Xingchen slowly bent down, her heart beating wildly in her chest. She covered her chest with her hands, tears streaming down her eyes. Her little face was frightened, and she hugged her legs, at a loss.

She didn't know what she felt, it was a suffocating feeling.

She didn't believe it! She didn't believe it! They both rolled down the hill at the same time, and she woke up. There was no reason why Jun Haoyue couldn't wake up.

After strengthening her conviction, she raised her sleeve to wipe the corner of her eyes, picked up Mundun'er who was beside her legs, and said in a hoarse voice: "Mundun'er, go find your father quickly. If your mother is alive, your father must be alive too."
