Chapter 17 Promise

The main purpose today was to pick mushrooms. They walked to remote places, most of which had no roads. Lin Xiuyao pushed aside the grass and branches in front to prevent Su Qingmeng from being scratched.

After walking for almost two hours, they had picked up a full basket of mushrooms. They saw several hawthorn trees. Su Qingmeng was surprised. She picked one and tasted it. It was too sour. Seeing her frown because of the sourness, Lin Xiuyao laughed.

Su Qingmeng hit him, feeling that ever since she agreed to date him, Lin Xiuyao's true nature had been revealed. He always liked to tease her, and the maturity and stability he had displayed before was all an act.

Although hawthorns are sour, Su Qingmeng still picked them all. She could dry them and soak them in water to drink. She packed them into a sack.

It was noon, and Su Qingmeng took out the lunch she had prepared: pancakes and mung bean cakes with eggs and various vegetables. Lin Xiuyao also brought four large buns.

Su Qingmeng ate one and it tasted familiar, much like the sauerkraut-filled buns she'd had at the county's state-owned restaurant. She lowered her eyes. He hadn't been to the county town in the past few days, so she wondered if he'd made this himself or...

She tentatively asked, "Lin Xiuyao, did you make these buns? You're quite skilled."

Lin Xiuyao was stunned for a moment. "No, that, um..." His eyes flickered. "Someone brought it to me from the county town yesterday."

What if he says he made it himself and then can't make the same taste? The chefs in state-owned restaurants have good skills, which are not comparable to ordinary people.

The reaction was quite quick, but Su Qingmeng didn't quite believe it. Taoyuan Township didn't have a fresh food preservation system, and the buns couldn't be kept for a few days without going bad. Lin Xiuyao wouldn't have a warehouse, would he?

The two of them ate quietly, each thinking about their own things.

After dinner, they continued walking up the mountain and found half a sack of hawthorn berries and a handful of raspberries.

The terrain began to become steep, and Lin Xiuyao said, "Let me pull you up." He stretched out his hand, and Su Qingmeng noticed that his earlobes were slightly red. As shameless as he was, he was actually shy.

She placed her hand on his, her heart beating a little faster.

Lin Xiuyao held Su Qingmeng's hand. Her hands were soft and delicate, while his hands were long and strong. Neither of them spoke.

After passing this steep mountain road, Su Qingmeng struggled, but Lin Xiuyao held on tightly. Su Qingmeng was a little annoyed and said, "I'm going to pick mushrooms."

Lin Xiuyao looked at her slightly red cheeks, like tempting apples, and he spoke in a hoarse voice, "Su Qingmeng, I want to kiss you, can I?"

Su Qingmeng thought to herself, you are still a gentleman, and you even asked, but since you asked, it must be forbidden, men will always push for more.

"No," Su Qingmeng shyly refused, "It's too fast."

Lin Xiuyao was a little disappointed, but he still let her go. The two of them picked mushrooms. There were a lot of mushrooms here, and there was also a small patch of Hericium erinaceus.

After picking up the items, they headed back. On the way back, Lin Xiuyao harvested a pheasant and two rabbits. This trip was a complete success.
